Corsicana Is Best Team Wildcats Have Faced So Far According to Wildcat Coach Owens; Game at Prim Friday
At his weekly media gathering Tuesday (October 16) morning, Wildcats Football Coach Greg Owens said Corsicana is the best team the Wildcats have faced so far this season. He used the word athletic over and over to describe them.
Coach Owens said Corsicana’s talented quarterback and head coach’s son Blake Hoffman, is a point of emphasis for the Wildcats this week. He said Hoffman was the MVP of the Tigers’ district last year. Coach Owens said Hoffman is a better runner than passer but he added he can throw very well also. He said the Tigers also have a solid running back in Dajioun Nathan. Coach Owens said the Corsicana offensive line is not as big as Ennis’ but he said they are long guys that understand their scheme.
He said it would be very important for the Wildcats to tackle very well. Coach Owens said a missed tackle could mean six points against Corsicana. He said the Tigers’ defense has athleticism. Coach Owens said they are not super big but he added they are quick.
For the third district game in a row, he said a key to the game would be physicality in the offensive and defensive lines. Coach Owens said our district is all about being physical. He expects a great ballgame between two teams that are undefeated in district play and who will be battling for first place. He said he liked where the Wildcats are right now adding they control their own destiny.
FM 71 Near Cooper Lake Closed Due to Flooding; Flood Watch Continues Tuesday
As the rains continue Tuesday afternoon, FM 900 between Saltillo and Dike is now temporarily close along with FM 71 at Sulphur River near Cooper Lake. The closures are a result of flooding.
Hopkins County and parts of Northeast Texas area remains under a flood watch until 7 p.m. today. Widespread rain will continue today which may lead to additional flooding.
Other roads in the Paris District for TxDOT closed includes FM 100 near Telephone, Texas in Fannin County and in Hunt County: FM 36 South of I-30, and FM 1565 South of State Highway 276 and Union Valley.

Lady Cats Have Important District Volleyball Game at Greenville Tuesday Night
The Lady Cats’ volleyball team hopes to continue its success in the second half of district play as they play an important match at Greenville Tuesday night (October 16). Both teams are 3-4 in district play. They are in a three way tie for third place with Royse City. After a 1-4 start for the Lady Cats in the first half of district play, they won a pair of home games last week to start the second half. The Lady Cats are 27-11 for the season. The Lady Lions come in with a season record of 21-13. When the two teams played back on September 28 in Sulphur Springs, the Lady Lions won a decisive fifth set, 15-7 to take the match, 3-2. Lady Cats Volleyball Coach Justin Maness said it would be nice to win at Greenville although he acknowledged that it would be tough to do there. He said a win would put the Lady Cats in the mix for a good seed for the playoffs. Coach Maness said the Lady Cats need to get their minds right and play the best they can. He said if the Lady Cats win, it would be a huge turnaround in district play. The freshman and JV Lady Cats’ teams play Greenville beginning at 5 p.m. The Lady Cats and Lady Lions’ varsity teams get underway in Greenville at around 6:30 p.m.
Wildcats Team Tennis in Bi-District Play Against Whitehouse Tuesday
The Wildcats’ team tennis squad is playing in a bi-district playoff match against Whitehouse on this Tuesday (October 16) game day. The match was originally scheduled for tennis courts at Van at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday. With all of the rain, the teams were able to schedule the match at indoor courts in Texarkana at Texas High. The Wildcats last played an opponent back on September 18 against Texas High at the Wildcat Tennis Center. The Wildcats are the number three seed in District 15-5A. Whitehouse is the runner up in District 16-5A. The winner of the bi-district match will play Kaufman Friday.
Man Dies from Wound as Law Enforcement Now Awaits Autopsy Report in Apparent Murder/Suicide
The body of Stephen Roy Wyatt, 60, of Sulphur Springs has been sent to the medical examiner’s office in Dallas Tuesday afternoon, according to Sulphur Springs Chief of Police Jay Sanders. Sanders said Wyatt was removed from life support around 10 a.m. Monday. His death follows an incident at his home Sunday that preliminary investigation shows a murder/suicide. However, no official ruling will be made until after the autopsy.
Laura Wyatt, 39, was found dead in their home the victim of an apparent gun shot and her husband, Wyatt, was found wounded from an apparent gunshot to the head. Local law enforcement and Texas Ranger John Vance now await the autopsy report to conclude the incident into the incident that occurred Sunday at the Wyatt home on Rockdale Road.
Sulphur Springs Police were dispatched to the 900 block of Rockdale Road Sunday, October 14, 2018 when witnesses heard arguing between a male and female inside a house at that location. Gun shots were also heard. The end result inside the house was one dead and one wounded during the disturbance. The Wyatt was transported to CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital ER by Hopkins County EMS. Witnesses told police they heard the arguing and then a gun shot. Several more gun shots followed the first. First officers on the scene called for the special response team made up of SWAT and EMS personnel. Once inside the house, the officers found the female dead from apparent gunshots and the male wounded by apparent gunshots, according to Chief Sanders.
Wyatt had been arrested in September for Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon when he was accused of striking his wife in the head with the bottom of a pistol and chased her around with the gun. During the investigation at the scene, Wyatt told Sulphur Springs Police that he wanted to commit suicide. He was transported to the local hospital by EMS while in police custody at that time. He was out of jail on bond when the incident occurred Sunday.

New Coach for Lady Cat Basketball is Ready for First Official Practice Day Wednesday
New Lady Cats Basketball Coach Brittney Tisdell says she is ready for the first official practice day of the season on Wednesday (October 17). She says it’s been a long off season.
Coach Tisdell replaced former Lady Cats Coach Jeff Chapman, who left to become girls’ athletic coordinator and head girls’ basketball coach at Paris. Coach Tisdell is the daughter of the Paris boys’ head basketball coach Billy Mack Steed. Coach Tisdell says she was raised in gyms and on buses. She was also a player. Coach Tisdell’s first coaching job was as an assistant at Cooper. She was also an assistant coach at Paris for three years. Her first head coaching job was at Mildred, near Corsicana, for the past two seasons. Coach Tisdell says they won only five games the year before she joined them. She says they made it to a tournament championship game and won 16 games last season. Coach Tisdale says she told Volleyball Coach Justin Maness she hopes he has a great season this year but she admits she can’t wait until volleyball players are able to join the basketball program.
She says she has five seniors available for practice Wednesday. Coach Tisdell says she also has a good group of freshmen. She says she got to know some of the players this summer during open gym sessions. Coach Tisdell says she also watched some of them in a Saturday tournament game this summer. She says she is still looking for scrimmage opportunities this season.
The Lady Cats are scheduled to open the regular season at home against Emory Rains on Saturday, November 10.
UIL Regional Band Contest Moved to SSHS Multipurpose Building Tuesday; Wildcat Band Performs at 8:15 a.m.
Sulphur Springs High School’s Multipurpose Building will be the site of the UIL Regional Band Contest on Tuesday (October 16). The event was moved from Mount Plesant due to concerns about inclement weather. The Wildcats will perform at 8:15 a.m. Wildcats’ Marching Band Director Spencer Emmert calls this year the year of the gully washer with almost constant rain recently.
Out of all the football game Friday nights and contests, the Wildcats’ band has only had one occasion when they were not rained on. Emmert says everyone is having to deal with it. He says the Wildcats contest last Saturday (October 13) at Mount Pleasant was canceled due to the weather. After Saturday’s cancellation, Emmert says the band had a great rehearsal inside the multipurpose building and got better. He says when he was at Winnsboro three years ago, bands had to move an Area UIL Contest to a multipurpose building in Carthage.
Emmert says there are some issues with playing indoors such as reverberation or echoing. However a band may benefit from resonance, which can actually make them sound better. Emmert says judges end up right on top of you in an indoor facility. He says judges are used to being up in stands where they can observe a band as a collective ensemble. Emmert says indoors and close, judges have to focus on individual members, making their performance more important.
One benefit to an indoor site is that the Wildcats Band will be able to utilize its’ grid tarp, considered a key part of the band’s show and concept. They have only been able to use it once. That was at the first home game at Prim Stadium.
