Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Magazine is out and they have picked the Wildcats to finish in sixth place in their nine team District 8-5A in Division II.

Some also picked the Wildcats sixth in preseason last year but the Wildcats finished third and made the playoffs. The Wildcats finished the season at 6-4 including a bi-district loss to Frisco. They were 5-3 in district play.

This season, Texas Football sees Ennis first, defending champ Corsicana second, North Forney third and Kaufman fourth. Then, Royse City fifth, the Wildcats sixth, Forney seventh, Greenville eighth and Terrell ninth.

They like Ennis athlete Dyllan Santos as district Offensive MVP and Corsicana linebacker Tyler Farmer as Defensive MVP.

Texas Football notes the Wildcats will have four offensive and four defensive starters returning.

They list the following Wildcats as players to watch: running back Caden Davis, running back Da’Korian Chock Sims, linebacker Kylan Wade, defensive lineman Cameron Kaufert, quarterback Kaden Wallace and defensive back Chase Haney.

Texas Football lists other prospects: linebacker George Greenway, defensive back Detrick Clayton, defensive lineman D’Andre Peeples and kicker Brandon Zavala.

They say a large senior class has moved on so the Wildcats will need youth to be served if a playoff return is in order.

I’ll share some more of their picks all this week.

Good Start for The Edge Monday During an Unusual Week

Good Start for The Edge Monday During an Unusual Week

An unusual, week five of The Edge conditioning program got off to a good start Monday, July 8, according to Wildcats Football Offensive Coordinator Matt Young.

After 4th of July week, Monday’s attendance at The Edge continued right where it has been with 60 showing up. Coach Young said only two or three players did not show up out of the top 25 varsity football players. He said that was one of their best attendance days since the first week in June.

The Edge will now have a two day hiatus Tuesday and Wednesday. Coach Young said the UIL mandated the days off so that coaches may attend meetings of the Texas Girls Coaches Association. On those dead days, athletic facilities will be closed.

The Edge will resume Thursday with the second and last day this week. The Edge concludes with a full four-day week, Monday through Thursday, next week.

Coach Young said he wasn’t concerned with Edge athletes missing a couple of days and he added he hopes they have fun. He said he is more concerned with a three-week layoff for varsity and JV football players between the end of The Edge and the start of football practice.

Coach Young is encouraging players to plan to lift weights together and go running together during the break. He said he can see the progress athletes who have attended The Edge from the beginning are making.

Coach Young said the group really handled gasser drills well Monday. He said athletes are looking good and feeling good and he said he is seeing more guys taking shirts off or wearing sleeveless shirts.

Coach Young said the Wildcats will have a lot of juniors on the roster this season and he said athletes undergo a lot of body changes between their sophomore and junior years. He said those attending The Edge are building confidence and self-esteem as well as their physical ability.

Student Accident Insurance, Budget, TASB Delegates Top July 8 SSISD Board Meeting

Student Accident Insurance, Budget, TASB Delegates Top July 8 SSISD Board Meeting

School Health Advisory Committee composition, student accident insurance coverage and conference delegates are among the items Sulphur Springs Independent School District Board of Trustees will be asked to consider approving during their regular monthly meeting tonight, July 8.

The trustees too are scheduled to hold a budget work session during the 6 p.m. meeting. At the regular June meeting, SSISD Business Manager Sherry McGraw presented trustees with a first draft of the budget, based on spring numbers. The district has received a couple of different templates and at that point were still assessing how to fulfill and the impact of House Bill 3. Certified tax values will not be available until July 24-25. All of those factors, plus staff changes as employees leave, retire and are reassigned during summer months will impact the budget. Trustees during a special meeting last Monday approved a new teacher pay scale, that includes raises, per HB 3.

Trustees amended the 2018-19 budget during the June meeting to reflect a $304,310 increase in expenditures from the general fund balance, $145,640 for costs associated with district restructuring of campuses by grade levels, $19,573 for the house project the career and technology students have been working on the last two years, $95,499 for athletic upgrades and $43,598 in additional expenses incurred when the boys played in the state basketball tournament in the spring semester. However, the district received $24,206 in donated revenue to help with costs associated with the state basketball tourney, bringing the total district cost to $19,392 for the tourney and $280,104 overall in additional expenses over the originally budgeted amount. That puts the overall budget at $38,004,465 for 2018-19.

McGraw is expected to present updated information, including the approved salary scale, figured conservatively until certified tax values are in.

The business manager too is expected to present information during tonight’s meeting and a recommendation for student accident insurance coverage for the 2019-2020 school year.

Veronica Arnold is scheduled to present information on the district’s School Health Advisory Committee activities and plans during the meeting, then later present for board consideration a recommended SHAC member list for 2019-2020.

Assistant Superintendent Josh Williams will provide for discussion Texas Association of School Boards Localized Manual Update 113. Typically, the school board receives the recommended policy changes at one meeting, then is asked at a future meeting to approve it, with any changes recommended by local officials. Often, this includes changes required by legislators which have to be adopted, but does sometimes include a few optional items districts are given some discretion over.

Williams also is scheduled to review the district employee handbook for 2019-2020.

Trustees will also be asked to select a delegate and alternate to attend the 2019 Texas Association of School Boards Delegate Assembly scheduled Saturday, Sept. 21, in Dallas.

An executive session is planned for any real estate or personnel items presented for board approval since the last meeting. Trustees have held five extra meetings since April in an effort to try to fill as many teacher and staff openings as possible before the new school year starts.

SSISD Board of Trustees meets regularly at 6 p.m. the second Monday of each month in the Board Room of SSISD Administration Building, 631 Connally St.

Connally Street Water Main Installation Complete; Drainage Improvements, Contract Work Planned

Connally Street Water Main Installation Complete; Drainage Improvements, Contract Work Planned
Connally Street construction continues with drainage improvements, excavation, stabilization and concrete paving still to go.

Work to rebuild Connally Street progresses, with a contractor hired to excavate, stabilize and pave the street following the next phase of construction.

With water main installation complete, city crews in the last week began connecting residences to the new water main. Sulphur Springs’ Construction Division is scheduled to construct the drainage improvements and a contractor has been selected to perform excavation, stabilization and concrete pavement work on Connally Street.

The city received four bids for the paving, excavating and stabilizing of the street that were all relatively close, although all bids were $60,000 to $70,000 higher than anticipated; 5W Concrete’s bid of $703,508.52 was the lowest, and therefore recommended by Community Development Director Tory Niewiadomski.

City Manager Marc Maxwell notes 5W Contracting was also the contractor on the Bill Bradford Road paving and work.

The upcoming work on Connally Street will be separate from the Cross Town Trails work, to be done later. This will only be for the street and sidewall on one side of the street. The sidewalk on the other side of the street will be part of the Cross Town Trails, according to Niewiadomski.

Traffic on League Street was detoured through Buford Park Monday as the intersection with Connally Street was closed Monday morning as crews continued the process of rebuilding Connally Street.

Sludge Composting

Sulphur Springs City Council also recently passed a resolution authorizing another company for sludge composting at the city’s wastewater treatment plan.

The city manager was authorized during the July council meeting to contract on-site treatment of sludge at Sulphur Springs Wastewater Treatment plant, to replace the contract that was previously performing on-site disposal.

The council met in executive session prior to the start of the regular July meeting to discuss the matter. The city’s contract with Texas Microbial Applications has been terminated. Bryant Brothers has been approved as the new contractor for composting of sludge, according to Maxwell.
