Tira News — Feb. 26, 2020
By Jan Vaughn
The quarterly Tira City Council Meeting will be held on Monday, March 2, 2020, at the Tira Community Center. The public is always welcome and encouraged to attend.
Yvonne Weir met Brenda Allen of Yantis at Plain and Fancy on Monday for a late birthday celebration of Brenda’s January birthday.

Our daughter and granddaughter, Tiffany and Jaidyn of Malvern, Arkansas, came for a visit on Friday evening. Our grandson, Kenden Joslin, and his girlfriend, Emma Hall, joined Chip, Grace and me for a birthday supper for Chip that night.
On Saturday, Tiffany and Jaidyn left to spend the weekend with their friend, Stephanie Weaver, in McKinney. That afternoon, I took our great-granddaughter, Dixie, to meet her mother, brothers and grandparents in Kilgore. She was here from Sour Lake near Beaumont with Landon, Laiken, Rylan, Brailon and Slaiden Joslin during her winter break from school. Unfortunately, they all (except Dixie) experienced the stomach virus during the week, after just recovering from the flu a couple of weeks ago.
Chip, Grace and I visited John and Linda Vaughn on Sunday afternoon.
I always need and appreciate input from my friends to help keep me informed of news in our community. If you have any news pertaining to Tira residents, past or present, please contact me, Jan Vaughn, at 903-438-6688 or [email protected].

The Lady Lions season record is now 31-7. The Lady Lions now head for a Regional Tournament on Friday and Saturday at Mansfield Legacy High School. This is a killer tourney featuring #2 Dodd City, #3 Lipan, #8 Eula and #11 Saltillo. The Lady Lions play Eula Friday. The Regional final game will be Saturday at 2 p.m.

Asbestos Abatement Underway
In order for the new Senior Citizens Center to be built, the building at the corner of Oak ave and Fuller St must be razed. Sulphur Springs City Manager Marc Maxwell confirmed with KSST that asbestos abatement is underway. Windows, doors and even roof vents are now sealed, as a contractor carries out the work.

Asbestos-containing buildings that are to be torn down usually have to be sealed, and then have asbestos safely removed before ordinary demolition can be performed. Asbestos removal may take longer and cost more than the actual demolition.
A separate contractor is ready to demolish the building as soon as the all clear is give. Sulphur Springs construction crews are busy on other street projects, so a decision to hire an outside team to remove the building was made.
Marc Maxwell expects the demolition to begin in 10 days.

Globe Life Field Update: Toilets Flush
A recent significant update on the construction the new home of the Texas Rangers is that all the toilets flush. This is obviously done to stress test the elaborate plumbing system before the 2020 Season opens on March 26th, 2020. Super strange and wacky, but it’s pretty common practice before opening a large facility like this one.

Another update is that the front office has now officially moved into the new office space at Globe Life Field! The new official address for the ballpark is:
Texas Rangers Baseball Club
734 Stadium Drive, Arlington, TX 76011
You can purchase tickets to the 2020 season here.

Pre-season games are underway, and KSST is broadcasting mainly weekend games through March 23rd. KSST has ordered hundreds of tickets and will give them away to loyal listens during the season.

Sulphur Springs Pair Accused Of Substance Charge Possession
February 26, 2020 – Sheriff’s officers stopped a Ford F150 around 6:30 p.m. Feb. 25 for running the red light at that Bill Bradford Road and Gilmer Street intersection. Officers ended up taking the Sulphur Springs man and woman in the truck to jail for controlled substance possession, according to arrest reports.

Hopkins County Sheriff’s Lt. Amanda Weatherford and Sgt. Scott Davis reported detecting a strong alcohol odor in the truck upon contact with occupants Staci Lynn Burkham and Claston Wayne Bearden.
Bearden appeared to the deputies to be “extremely nervous and lied about his criminal history,” Weatherford alleged in arrest reports. When asked about weapons, Bearden also reportedly admitted to having a pocket knife in his front pocket, which he gave the officer permission to remove.
The deputy reported feeling a plastic bag in Bearden’s pocket while retrieving the knife. The bag contained a crystal-like substance deputies believed to be methamphetamine. Consequently, Bearden was taken into custody. The bag and substance allegedly weighed 3.27 grams, resulting in Bearden’s arrest for possession of 1 gram or more but less than 4 grams of a Penalty Group 1 controlled substance.

The vehicle was then searched. A bag containing what appeared to the officers be a usable amount of suspected methamphetamine, two pipes of the kind use to smoke methamphetamine and a red straw with suspected methamphetamine residue inside of it were allegedly found during the vehicle search. The bag weighed 0.4 grams, resulting in Burkham’s arrest for possession of less than 1 gram of a Penalty Group 1 controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Both 47-year-old Sulphur Springs residents were taken to jail; the truck was impounded. Claston, who is also known as Bearden Claxton, Wayne Dumas Claston, Claston Wayne Dumas and Claxton W. Bearden, remained in Hopkins County jail Wednesday morning, Feb. 26, in lieu of $20,000 on the controlled substance. Burkham, who is also known by Stacy Lynn Rawls Burkham and Staci Lynn Rawls Burkham, remained in jail in lieu of $5,00 bond on the controlled substance charge.
