A 30-year-old Cooper woman was taken into custody in Sulphur Springs early Friday morning on a Collin County warrant, according to jail reports.

A Hopkins County sheriff’s deputy reported conducting a traffic stop on gray Chevrolet sport utility vehicle around 12 a.m. Jan. 10 on State Highway 19 north at Loop 301 after noticing the vehicle defective license plate light.

The deputy contacted the 30-year-old woman in the SUV. A records check reportedly showed the woman to be wanted by Collin County authorities for violation of probation on a theft of property valued at $100 or more but less than $750 charge. Consequently, the woman was arrested at 12:22 a.m. Jan. 10 on the charge, according to arrest reports.

Welfare Check Results In Cumby Man's Arrest
Bryan Lee Winstead

A request for sheriff’s officers to check the welfare of person at his County Road 4131 address during the lunch hour Thursday resulted in a Cumby man’s arrest on a misdemeanor warrant and felony controlled substance charge, according to sheriff’s reports.

Hopkins County sheriff’s deputies reported being dispatched around 12:30 p.m. Jan. 9 to the CR 4131 address after someone expressed concern for the welfare of resident Bryan Lee Windstead. Communications operators also advised the 31-year-old Cumby man had an outstanding warrant for his arrest on a criminal mischief resulting in damage or loss of $100 or more but less than $750, Hopkins County Sheriff’s Sgt. Tanner Steward and Cpl. Todd Evans noted in arrest reports.

Upon the arrival, the sheriff’s officers reported seeing Winstead exit from a garage next to the residence. Winstead immediately reached into his front jacket pocket and appeared, to the officer,s to be extremely nervous when contacted by law enforcement, the deputies alleged in arrest reports.

Winstead was reportedly advised to stop reaching into his pocket as a precaution for officer safety. When asked, the man allegedly denied having any weapons on him. When told he would be frisked for weapons, Winstead allegedly admitted he was in possession of drugs and let an officer search his pockets. An officer allegedly found a hypodermic syringe containing suspected methamphetamine in one front jacket pocket.

Upon being taken into custody, the man allegedly asked the deputies to retrieve drug paraphernalia from the garage to keep the items out of the reach of children. Contraband was secured and Winstead was taken to jail, deputes noted in arrest reports.

The contraband and packaging reportedly weighed 2.57 grams; the substance seized also allegedly field-tested positive for methamphetamine. Consequently, Winstead was booked not only on the misdemeanor criminal mischief warrant but also for possession of 1 gram or more but less than 4 grams of a Penalty Group 1 controlled substance, according to arrest reports.

Winstead remained in Hopkins County jail Friday morning, Jan. 10. Bond was set at $1,000 on the criminal mischief charge and $10,000 on the felony controlled substance charge, according to jail reports.

This year’s sponsors are Alliance Bank, Oncor, Jay Hodge Chevrolet, and Eternity Creations.

“We have 20 kids signed up right now but we are looking for more basketball players,” said Owens.

Games dates are:  Jan. 27,  Feb. 3, Feb. 10, and Feb. 24 , and are played at 6 p.m. in the Sulphur Springs Elementary campus gym.

Big Sulphur Springs Powerlifting Meet Takes Place Saturday At Multipurpose Building

Sulphur Springs High School Powerlifting Coach Casey Jeter says the Sulphur Springs Powerlifting Meet is huge and one of the biggest in Texas. It takes place Saturday, January 11, in the Multipurpose Building on campus.

He says this year’s meet will be ever bit as large as last year’s. Coach Jeter says he has already had more than 15 schools say they are coming. He says the number of female lifters equals male lifters for the first time at this meet. Coach Jeter says there will be five platforms for boys and five for girls. The meet will also have 30 judges and 30 table workers.

Weigh in begins Saturday at 6:30 a.m. and will run until 8 a.m. Squat competition starts at 8:30 a.m. followed by bench press and dead lift. Breakfast and lunch will be served to the athletes.

Coach Jeter says powerlifting is a good spectator sport. He says there are awesome feats of lifting such as a 114 pound lifter squatting 450 pounds, three times their body weight.

Coach Jeter expects a good year from his Wildcats and Lady Cats’ teams. The Lady Cats team has doubled in size from two to four. Both Sable Erdmier and Addy Lamb return and they both went to the Regional Meet last year. He has State Meet hopes for both of them and he adds he believes Erdmier has the potential to medal at State.

Coach Jeter says the Wildcats are expected to be led by four Regional Meet qualifiers from last year. Perhaps the leader of the pack is George Greenway who also qualified for the State Meet last year. Caden Davis was a Regional qualifier last year and Coach Jeter hopes Davis can make it to State this season. Coach Jeter is also excited about the potential of the Carrillo brothers, Jessie and Ryan. Ryan lifts in the 198 pound class and Jessie in the 165 pound class.

Coach Jeter says to expect a highly competitive meet Saturday.
