Lady Cats Soccer Team, North Lamar, Battle to 2-2 Tie

The Lady Cats Soccer Team opened the regular season Tuesday night, Jan. 7, and they fought to a 2-2 tie with old rival North Lamar at Gerald Prim Stadium.

Getting the tie required the Lady Cats to come from behind twice. The Pantherettes wasted very little time getting on the scoreboard as Jaycie Proctor broke in on the goalkeeper and put the ball in the net. North Lamar led 1-0 only 3:22 into the first half. The Lady Cats scored the equalizer later in the half as Vanessa Lara found the net with 19:00 left in the first half.

North Lamar put the pressure on in the second half scoring a goal off of a beautiful corner kick placed right in front of the goal. Ashley Trenchard headed the ball into the net and the Pantherettes were up 2-1 with just 21:41 left in the second half. The Lady Cats answered less than 10 minutes later as Katelyn Robinson scored the tying goal after a nifty assist from Rebekah Stanley. The Lady Cats had some late chances but could not score.

Both teams will have to wait for their first win of the season. North Lamar is now 0-3-2. The Lady Cats are 0-0-1.

The Lady Cats play next in the 2020 Pine Tree Lady Pirate Showcase this Thursday through Saturday.

Sulphur Springs City Council Votes Unanimously On Contract For City Manager

Sulphur Springs City Council Votes Unanimously On Contract For City Manager
Sulphur Springs City Council voted Tuesday night on a contract for the city manager.

Sulphur Springs City Council Tuesday night unanimously voted in favor of a 5-year employment contact for the city manager.

The City Council entered into executive session to discuss matters affecting the office of the city manager, including a performance review, employment terms and other issues.

After 26 minutes, the council reconvened and heard from six individuals, who each asked the council to extend a contract to Maxwell.

“I feel like City Council right now is at a choice to go in a direction that they are going if they let it or to change direction. I sincerely and solemnly hope that you choose to continue going in the direction that you have been going in. Nobody changes the CEO of a company that’s doing well and getting better,” Robert Lenington said.

He said there are always changes that can make things better and room for personal improvement improve. It’s not reasonable to allow small disagreements to change the direction of an entire corporation, Lenington noted.

“I sincerely hope that you are in prayer when you consider Marc Maxwell and his job,” Lenington told the City Council. “I have not agreed with everything he has done, but he is a good man and he should be given a long contract. He represents this community well, and represents everybody to the best of his ability. I strongly believe he is the exact person that we at this time, and I prayerfully request you consider extending him a long contact.”

Tim Kelty said Maxwell is no different than a corporate CEO, and as such deserves a good long contact.

Clay Walker, who previously served on the city council and has served on the planning and zoning boards, said Maxwell has done a “remarkable job” as city manager. He acknowledged that while he and Maxwell have not always agreed or seen eye-to-eye on everything, they were able to communicate and work things out ahead of time to reach a consensus.

“We were remiss when I was on the council in not doing job reviews, we never felt like he needed it,” said Walker. “I would encourage this council for continuity and continued growth, continued prosperity of things we’ve seen here to give Marc a contract.”

Brad Johnson, on behalf of him and his wife and representing Northeast Texas Farmers Coop, expressed support for the city manager and stability and progress for Sulphur Springs.

David Niegarth described improvements in the city as improving “a thousand percent” over the last 25 years.

“It has to do with the person that’s been in leadership of this city,” said Niegarth, who said the council should “definitely” give the city manager a contract.

“Marc needs a good long contract. I’ve been here 45 years and through five city managers. Most of them didn’t have time to get started doing nothing. Marc’s been here long enough he’s got stuff going. Downtown had several businesses when I moved here. Then, it had hardly any businesses. Now, it’s thriving, and I’m not just talking downtown. I think Marc needs a good long contract to finish out what he’s doing,” John Heilman said.

At the conclusion of the comments, Councilman Doug Moore made the motion, seconded by Councilman Harold Nash, to approve the contract for the city manager as presented.

“Just for the record, that’s a 5-year contract with a 1-year buyout provision and calls for the annual performance that was already discussed earlier this evening,” Sulphur Springs City Attorney Jim McLeroy noted.

Mayor John Sellers affirmed those terms for the contract.

The contract was unanimously approved by the City Council, to applause from many in attendance at the meeting.

Basketball and Soccer on Tuesday Game Day

Last year’s back to back Lady Cats and Wildcats’ basketball games in district play seemed to be well received by fans. The Lady Cats and Wildcats will again be involved in one on this game day Tuesday (January 7) but this one will feature non-district games and will be on the road. Sherman is the host. Action begins at 5 p.m. Tuesday with the Lady Cats JV versus the Sherman JV in the main Sherman gym. Then the Lady Cats varsity will play the Lady Bearcats varsity beginning at 6:15 p.m. with the Wildcats varsity taking on the Sherman varsity at around 7:30 p.m. with both games also in the main Sherman gym. The Wildcats JV will play Sherman’s JV at 5 p.m. in the Sherman Auxiliary Gym with the Wildcats freshman taking on the Bearcats’ freshman at 6:15 p.m in the Sherman Auxiliary Gym. The Lady Cats varsity is 6-16 for the season. The Wildcats are ranked #4 in Class 5A and they are 16-6 for the season. Wildcats Basketball Coach Clark Cipoletta says Sherman should challenge the Wildcats. He says one Bearcat player scored 42 points against Mount Pleasant last Friday in a 4 point Sherman loss. Coach Cipoletta says Sherman is athletic and will fly around and hustle. He adds they like to vary their defenses.

Meanwhile the Lady Cats Soccer Team opens the regular season at home at Gerald Prim Stadium on this game day Tuesday facing old foe North Lamar. There will be a JV contest at 5:30 p.m. The varsity match should get underway at around 7:15 p.m. The Lady Cats have a new head coach, Javier Aguayo, an assistant last year for Wildcats Soccer Coach Alexi Upton. The Lady Cats have played well in scrimmages this season. The Lady Cats tied a traditionally good Kilgore team 2-2 before losing in penalty kicks at Prim Stadium. Then the Lady Cats topped Paris, 1-0 on the road. Coach Aguayo is replacing longtime Lady Cats assistant coach and head coach Joel Bailey, who retired from coaching after last season. KSST Radio will bring you the Lady Cats and Pantherettes soccer match live from The Prim with live video and audio streaming beginning at around 7:15 p.m. The game will also be videotaped and posted to YouTube and also be broadcast at a later date on Channel 18 on Suddenlink Cable.
