Lady Cats Soccer Coach Javier Aguayo Sees Possibility of a Good Start in District Play

The Lady Cats Soccer Team picked up a win in their last game Friday (February 7) before the start of district play on Tuesday night. Friday the Lady Cats won at Gerald Prim Stadium, 2-1 over Nevada Community. The Lady Cats won despite missing several other opportunities to score. Freshman Rebekah Stanley continued to impress as she had a goal after an assist from Janine Yamaguchi. Haley Robinson also added an unassisted goal. Coach Aguayo said the Lady Cats played great and controlled the game. He added Community Coach Macy Hurley, a former Lady Cats and UT-Tyler goalkeeper, is doing a good job at Community. He said the Lady Braves also had several very good players. Coach Aguayo promoted three JV players to the varsity and he said they all played well. He said the Lady Cats defense made no mistakes. From what he can determine, Coach Aguayo said the Lady Cats first two district opponents have struggled to win so far this season. The Lady Cats host Greenville Tuesday night and Lindale Friday night. Coach Aguayo said the Lady Cats are beginning to play better now and he added he is very proud of them.

Wildcats Soccer Coach Alexi Upton Feels Really Good About His Team Entering District Play Tuesday

Wildcats Soccer Coach Alexi Upton is very excited about his Wildcats team on the eve of the beginning of district play. Saturday (February 8) Coach Upton was on KSST Radio and Cable Channel 18’s Saturday Morning Coaches Show. On Friday night, the Wildcats won 3-1 at Nevada Community, a team preseason ranked #5 in Region II in Class 4A. Coach Upton said the Braves were a good team but he did say they have had a few injuries lately. He said the Wildcats were able to capitalize and get a win over a good team. Coach Upton was thrilled by a goal by senior Christian Ramirez. He said Ramirez has grown and matured as a soccer player and as a person over the past four years in high school. Coach Upton is also impressed with forward Omar Hernandez who had two goals Friday. He called Hernandez a fast, athletic player. Coach Upton also likes a player he calls the assist king, Kevin Yanez. Yanez got another assist Friday on one of the Hernandez’ goals. Then there is the Wildcats defense. Coach Upton said junior defender David Moreno is a glue guy for the Wildcats defense. He said the key to the Wildcats defense is being strong, being tight and being aggressive. The Wildcats have gone 8 games without a defeat. Since a loss on January 11, the Wildcats have won 4 and tied 4. Coach Upton said the Wildcats have played a tougher schedule this year and he has convinced his team they can play with anyone. The Wildcats open district play on the road at Greenville Tuesday night. He said the Lions lost 16 seniors off of an 18 player roster last year. He said they are having to reload. Coach Upton likes his chances Tuesday night.

Lady Cats Basketball Coach Brittney Tisdell Prefers to Look at Big Game Ahead Instead of Looking Back to Friday Loss

Rather than dwell on last Friday’s (February 7) 48-31 loss at Mount Pleasant, Lady Cats Coach Brittney Tisdell is focusing on a big game coming up Tuesday night at home on senior night. She did have a few things to say about the Mount Pleasant game. Coach Tisdell said the Lady Cats got off to a good start Friday before falling off. She said she told her team at halftime Friday that she needed to be able to make substitutions without the team falling apart. Fortunately for the Lady Cats, a Lindale team one game behind the fourth place Lady Cats also lost Friday at Texas High on a late basket. That sets up a big game for the Lady Cats as they host Texas High Tuesday. Lindale will be playing at home against last place Greenville. Coach Tisdell remembers the Lady Cats first game with Texas High in Texarkana. The Lady Cats led most of the game and only a last second missed shot allowed the Lady Tigers to get a 43-42 win. Coach Tisdell expects her team to play better against Texas High Tuesday at home.

Wildcats Basketball Coach Clark Cipoletta said Wildcats Needed to Be More Aggressive in Mt. Pleasant Loss Friday

Wildcats Basketball Coach Clark Cipoletta said Wildcats Needed to Be More Aggressive in Mt. Pleasant Loss Friday

Wildcats Basketball Coach Clark Cipoletta, on KSST Radio and Cable Channel 18’s Saturday Morning Coaches Show, said the Wildcats came out too reserved against Mount Pleasant in a 45-31 loss on the road last Friday (February 7). He said the Wildcats needed to play aggressively, not passively. On top of that he said the Wildcats did not finish well inside and did not shoot the ball well. Coach Cipoletta said he’d rather have a game like this now than at a critical time later that could mean the end of one’s season. He said the Wildcats have been a good offensive team against zone defenses this season but were not Friday. He did give credit to the Tigers’ defense for making things hard for the Wildcats. Coach Cipoletta said the Wildcats are a good three point shooting team but he said that was not the case last Friday. He said the Wildcats killed Mount Pleasant on the offensive boards the first time they played. He said the Tigers did a good job of preventing offensive rebounds Friday night. Coach Cipoletta said he sees this season as a a long journey and noting his team’s current second place status said there were different ways to get where we want to go. With three district games left, Coach Cipoletta said a three-game winning streak would be a good way to enter the playoffs. All three district games left are at home: Tuesday night versus Texas High, Friday night against Royse City and a senior night game on February 18 against Lindale. The Wildcats are currently ranked #10 in Class 5A. Mount Pleasant popped into the rankings at #24. The Wildcats are 5-2 in district play and 23-8 for the season.
