Diana is Available for Adoption

Deborah Balkcom, a volunteer with Hearts of Life Animal Rescue, brought  Diana, who is up for adoption, to KSST Wednesday. Diana, a blue heeler mix, was found along with her puppies and another adult dog after they were dumped on the streets just before a major ice storm during the previous winter. “Two of her puppies were actually on the show just two weeks ago, and they are still up for adoption,” Balkcom said. “Diana is a loving dog, and she likes kids and all people. Reds Whites and BREWS!

At least a dozen Texas wineries will be a part of the first ­ever Reds, Whites and Brews Festival coming to Celebration Plaza Saturday from noon until 4 p.m. The wineries reds and whites will be judged by sommeliers or wine professionals. Craft beers will be featured at Bayou Jacks, Lou Vineys, Burger Grind and Muddy Jakes. The Jazz Melodies band will play during the festival.

Chicks for Charity

Chicks For Charity in Hopkins County received the Community Pride award at the Chamber Banquet in February for their unique way of funding local non­profit agencies with little effort. The Chicks meet once every three months and vote for a non­profit to support. Each member writes the charity a $50 check. In three and a half years, the Chicks have donated close to $84,000. Chicks for Charity

As a Hopkins County charity-funding organization, Chicks for Charity is unique. The organization structure is almost non-structure, yet each year, the group accomplishes a lot of good in and for the community. Membership is about 130 “chicks” currently. There are no elected officers, no board of directors, no bank account and no annual “fund-raisers”. The group meets four times per year to hear nominations and select a recipient, but even meeting attendance is not mandatory. A donates of $50 per quarter is required,...
