Hearts of Life Facility Under Construction

The Hearts of Life Foundation, an animal rescue and adoption center, is undergoing construction to extend their facilities. Improvements include new drainage to divert flood water, as well as a new enclosed shelter for the animals. “Whenever we got rain, the water would actually pool at our present barn where we have the dogs housed,” Deborah Balkcom of Hearts of Life said. The improved drainage has already been finished, and Hearts of Life is waiting for the next phase to begin work on a new shelter building for the animals....

August 12, 2015 – If you want to wish upon a star, tonight you are in luck! The meteor shower will start approximately around midnight. You could see up to 50 meteors per hour if you are in a dark location and your view is not disturbed by trees or buildings. You don’t need any fancy gear like a telescope or binoculars. Priscilla is a two month old Lab/Spaniel mix. She was found yesterday, August 10 at 2:00 p.m. on Casey Street. She appeared by herself at a woman’s house. The woman took Priscilla to the Sulphur Springs Animal Shelter. “She’s a little scared, that’s why I figured she was probably dumped,” Animal Shelter Officer Barbi Blanch said. “No one is really going to be looking for her. Ladycats Scrimmage Cumby, Commerce Friday Morning

The Sulphur Springs High School Ladycats Volleyball team scrimmaged against Cumby and Commerce late Friday morning at 10:00 a.m. Freshman, JV and Varsity all scrimaged at the same time, with Freshman in the auxilliary gym and JV and Varsity in the main gym. The main gym court was split in half to make two smaller volleyball courts for JV and Varsity. While no scores were kept, the Ladycats played well across all three Ladycats teams. Dike Volunteer Fire Department responded to put out a potentially large grass fire.  Once again, area volunteers put down their work and rushed to fight a fire.  This fire call was to a hay field north of Dike, TX. Speculation at the scene indicated the fire was started by a tractor mower. Units from Hopkins County Fire Department and Brinker Volunteer Fire Departments also responded. Tuesday morning, August 4, at 11 a.m. Sulphur Springs Animal Shelter officers and local law enforcement officers responded to a call about a dog left locked in a vehicle in the Walmart parking. It took nearly two hours for responders to get the dog out of the car. “Ironically, the dog had actually broken its chain at home and the owners were afraid of the dog getting loose, so they took the dog with them to Walmart and locked it in the car,” Animal Control Officer Annie DeWolfe said. “Unfortunately that was not the best...
