4-H Today Feb. 2023

Celebrating Black Equestrians
When Morgan and Mariah Piper fell in love with riding at City Ranch, their father, Murray, didn’t know the first thing about horses. All he knew was that his girls had found their spark, so he kept bringing them back.
Six years later, the Piper Sisters are putting their 4-H skills to work. They’re caring for their family’s first horse, Dunkin, volunteering to teach other kids how to ride, and even representing Baltimore by riding in parades.
This Black History Month, we want to celebrate The Piper Family by recognizing Morgan and Mariah and the future they represent. Stay tuned for more.

Meal-A-Day Cancelled for Thursday
February 1, 2023 – With a heavy heart, the Sulphur Springs Meal-A-Day program has decided to pause operations, again, on Thursday, February 2, 2023 due to the continued winter weather conditions. Although we’ve seen periods without precipitation this afternoon, the amount of ice on the roads, grounds, walkways, metal ramps, etc. has caused concerns for safety of driving and walking to doors for meal delivery. For the continued safety of our beloved volunteers and partners, we must make the difficult decision to extend our service interruption.
We apologize for any inconvenience. The Meal-A-Day program will provide additional non-perishable essentials with our regularly scheduled Friday delivery to our senior community to better prepare for similar unforeseen weather events.
We hope you are all staying warm and safe during this time.
Sincerely Yours,
Amanda Dietlin

Winter Cleanup Soon Begins
February 1, 2023 – Blocked roads, downed power lines, and sheets of ice persist in Hopkins County and across Texas. The storm isn’t completed over either. Rain and freezing temperatures will continue for the next 24 – 36 hours. Temperatures may not climb above freezing until Friday. When it does, areas that received up to 3 inches of accumulation will instantly turn to a frigid swamp.
ONCOR crews have been working across the state to get the power back on. Limbs, trees, and even the weight of the ice itself caused the bulk of power problems. We we lucky in Hopkins county that the wind did not blow harder, and cause even more damage. As of Wednesday morning, several thousand residents of Hopkins County were without power.
Tough decisions will need to be made on some tress wounded by the storm. Initially breaking up the limbs and making paths will be the order of the day. The City of Sulphur Springs will open the ‘Spring Cleaning Site’ by Flowserve this weekend. Residents with proof of address will be allow to dump trees and limbs. Dropping off will be the easy part of that operation.

Most non-essential City and County services are closed today. The majority of business are also closed for several reasons and to keep their employees off the roads and safe. Expect a more normal Winter day on Friday.
