Danny Davis is the new Hopkins County Veterans’ Service Officer. He was introduced Monday by County Judge Robert Newsom. Davis replaces the retiring Captain Joe Reid Scott who served in the post for 19 years. Davis is retired from the Air Force after a 23 and a half year career. That included five deployments to the Middle East. Davis comes to the county from Texas A&M-Commerce where he worked in veterans’ benefits.

The Hopkins County Dairy Festival Board is currently seeking contestants for the 56th annual Dairy Festival Queen’s Scholarship Pageant.
If you know of a junior girl enrolled in a Hopkins County school, please contact Cindy Lancaster at 903-439-5336 or Gena Prickette at 903-243-4534. The board will be happy to contact the potential contestant and answer any questions they might have.
The Hopkins County Dairy Festival is the annual celebration of the contributions by the Dairy Industry and the hard working dairy families of our community.

February was another wet month for Sulphur Springs,
February was another wet month for Sulphur Springs, the second one in a row for 2015. A total of 3.23 inches of precipitation fell in February, that’s 3-hundredths of an inch above normal of 3.2 inches. Sulphur Springs has now had 7.84 inches on rain during January and February, some 1.76 inches of moisture above average. Average is 6.08 inches. March is usually a wet month averaging 4.27 inches of rain.
Dense Fog Advisory Until 10 AM Tuesday Morning
National Weather Service in Fort Worth has issued a dense fog advisory until 10 a.m. Tuesday for the North and Northeast Texas area. The advisory includes Sulphur Springs and the Hopkins County area. Visibility can be reduced to less than one quarter mile at times throughout the night. Areas of drizzle could accompany the fog thought the night. Reduced visibility will make driving hazardous at night especially in areas where roads are wet.
If driving in dense fog—slow down, use your low-beam headlights and leave plenty of distance between you and the vehicle ahead of you.
Hopkins County Junior Market Show, Sale of Champions
It appears this year’s North East Texas Livestock Association’s Junior Market Livestock Show produced another record-setting Sale of Champions Saturday at the Civic Center Arena. NETLA President Kevin Gibson estimated the sale generated a record breaking $330,000. Last year’s sale produced a record breaking $325,200. 126 animals made the sale and two animals were auctioned to raise scholarship money.

Mum is the word from Hannah’s family and friends, per contract with ‘The Voice’ producers.
Barbara Bryant
Funeral service for Barbara Bryant, age 85, of Emory, will be held Tuesday, March 3, 2015, 11:00 am, at Emory Church of Christ. Burial will follow in Dougherty Cemetery. David Baker will officiate. Visitation will be at 10:00 am, one hour prior to service time, at the church.
Ms. Bryant died Saturday, Feb. 28, 2015, in Sulphur Springs at the Carriage House. She was born Oct. 7, 1929, in Cherokee City, AR, to Horton and Blanche Ellis Allen. She married H.D. “Bud” Bryant, in Emory, on Oct. 26, 2002.
Ms. Bryant was a member of Emory Church of Christ, and was in the Women’s Service Club for many years.

Averie passed away on February 25, 2015 at Hopkins County Memorial Hospital. O.T. “Wink” Winkle
Graveside service for O.T. “Wink” Winkle, 91, of Yantis will be held at 3:00 p.m., Monday, March 2, 2015 at Tira Cemetery with Bro. Earl Brown officiating. Visitation will be held from 1:30 to 2:30, prior to service, at West Oaks Funeral Home. Mr. Winkle passed away on Friday, February 27, 2015 at Briarcliff Health Center in Tyler, TX.
He was born on August 1, 1923, the son of Harry O. and Exie Tolson Winkle. He married Ioma Hust on December 24, 1942 in Magnolia, AR. She preceded him in death. Mr. Winkle was a welder, an avid hunter, fisherman, and hiker, and also of the Presbyterian faith.
He is survived by son, Steve Winkle and wife Jaquita, daughter, Donna Loyd and husband Jimmie, four grandsons, and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ioma Winkle, son, Ken Winkle, sisters, Vera Crank, Pearl Hensley, Jewel Winkle, Florence Burchfield, Vearl Burnett, Elsie Dunbar, Norma Burchfield, and Joyce Welch. Arrangements are under the direction of West Oaks Funeral Home.
