How To Keep Your Lawn Looking Good All Summer!

Happy LawnSummer time is here, can your lawn handle the heat?

There are many ways you can keep your lawn healthy and green all summer long. It just takes a few simple tasks.
One common mistake made by both homeowners and commercial landscape maintenance companies is cutting a lawn too short. If your lawn is cut to short it reduces the plant’s ability to produce energy for growth. When cut at the proper height, the grass can grow stronger and develop deeper and healthier roots. Also keep in mind that each different type of grass has different growth habits such as Bermuda grass. It should be cut at least to a 2 inch height. You can allow it to grow to 3 inches between mowing. If you fertilize moderately, mowing a lawn should only be needed once per week.

One misconception about maintaining grass in extreme heat is the necessity to over water. A big issue is that after rainfall, people still irrigate their lawn. Grasses do better managed on the dry side rather than wet; when soil is constantly wet, it creates too many problems for plants and soil organisms alike. The grass-roots will be deprived of oxygen and may become more susceptible to disease because diseases thrive in wet conditions. In general, the drier the grass and soil, the less disease there will be. If you do water the grass at all it should be early in the morning or late in the afternoon when is not too hot outdoors. When grass is cut with a sharp mower blade, the plant will heal faster than when cut with a dull blade. Dull blades will actually tear the tissues in the grass not cut it. This torn grass tissue will develop a brown appearance at the surface and may become more susceptible to stress and disease. Sharper blades will prevent a brown appearance and help to prevent further harm to the plant.

Homeowners and landscape companies will do whatever it takes to keep their lawn healthy and growing right. Although the idea of fertilizing might sound like a good idea to maintain a vigorous lawn, do not consider it during the heat of mid-summer. During the hot summer months, the cool season grasses are consuming more than they can produce. Fertilizing stimulates more growth, which consumes even more energy further stressing lawns during periods of high temperatures.

I hope these tips will be very helpful to you and your lawn!

Tesla Charging Stations

Eight Tesla Charging Stations, shown here while under construction are now open in Sulphur Springs and serving Tesla Owners.

“The Tesla super charging station is live” states City Manager Marc Maxwell. A representative of Tesla was in Sulphur Springs Tuesday to finalize the station for owners of the battery powered auto. The Tesla station is located at the corner of Davis and Tomlinson Streets. Tesla pays for the charge for their owners.

The whole idea is that the people who buy these cars are people with disposable income and their visit to Sulphur Springs will profit merchants and restaurants downtown according to Maxwell. Maxwell rode in a $135,000 Tesla Tuesday. Lower priced Tesla’s will be on the market in the next few years according to the company.

The charging station in Sulphur Springs is the only station between Dallas and Hot Springs Arkansas. Tesla does have charging stations at hotels but those take overnight for charging.  This station is a supercharging station that will require 45 to 70 minutes for a re-charge.

Hopkins County Sheriff’s Office/SPCA of Texas Seize 12 Dogs, 2 Horses from Como Residence

Hopkins County Sheriff’s officers and investigators assisted by the SPCA of Texas (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) seized 12 dogs, five of which were puppies, and two horses from 412 McBride St in Como,TX Tuesday afternoon. The animals were seized after an investigation by the Hopkins County Sheriff’s Office following a number of complaints from neighbors of the residence. Deputy Sheriff and County Animal Cruelty Investigator Kody Hume launched his investigation regarding the situation. After noting the condition, Hume obtained the warrant for the seizure and contacted the SPCA for their assistance in housing the animals after they were removed from the Como location.

Hume said that Hopkins County has no place to house animals that are removed from cruel confinement or mistreatment.  “The animals will be going back to the SPCA of Texas facility and will be medically and behaviorally evaluated. Upon completion of their evaluations, and depending on the court, the animals could end up in our custody where we will make sure that they are rehabilited and put them up for adoption. That is if the court awards us  custody of these animals,” SPCA of Texas Communications Manager Victoria Albrecht said.

Several of the animals were without food or water, including the five puppies and their mother. Many were malnourished, with one tied to an exceedingly short leash and another on a short chain. At least two of the dogs had mange and the horses had overgrown hooves. The Sheriff’s Department had received multiple reports of dogs that were loose which were violent toward other animals, sometimes hunting for their own food. The resident has been evicted and will face animal cruelty charges on July 7. “It’s definitely a horrible scene and animal cruelty is taken very seriously,” Albrecht said. “Many of the dogs were malnourished and tethered on a tight chain with no food or water and no shelter. We’re just going to get them some help and some love and nurse them back to health.”

The animals will be transported to a temporary holding facility in McKinney, TX where they will receive food, water, and medicine. “Here at the SPCA of Texas we have our own Animal Cruelty Investigations Unit that actually goes out and serves eight counties in Texas to help animals that are in need,” Albrecht said. “Situations like these happen too often, and what we want to do is try and gain awareness. If you visit our website you can donate now so you can help with rehabilitation and to help educate people about this in the future so we can avoid situations like this.”

People wanting to report animal cruelty can call the Sheriff’s Office at (903) 348-4040.

Water Bill Pay Kiosk Provides a Better Way to Pay

Sulphur Springs Water Department Kiosk is proving a better way for residents to pay their monthly bill.  When remodeling the Water Department they closed off the drive through which had to be called for the new Kiosk. Cash and cards accepted at kiosk, checks accepted in drop box. It has been open since January 25th and is successful. An estimated 100 people use it per month.

Kathie Steel of the Water Department quoted, “The Kiosk is pretty successful but online pay seems to be more convenient for people, and the only complaints about the kiosk is that it doesn’t give out change so be sure that you pay with exact change.” Kathie also says “My daughter uses the Kiosk and she prefers using it because it takes cards and that’s very convenient.” “There is many Kiosks around but we are the only ones that have the outdoor Kiosk.”said Kathie. Also what’s really convenient if you don’t have your bill at the Kiosk, you can look up your bill by address.
