Hillcrest Drive/State Highway 19 Closed at KCS Railroad July 9-10
PARIS – Texas Department of Transportation officials today announced that a portion of State Highway 19 in Sulphur Springs in Hopkins County will be closed for a brief time in July.
The closure will occur so crews can rebuild the KCS railroad cross that crosses State Highway 19 approximately 1,000 feet north of the intersection of SH 19 (Hillcrest Drive) and BU 67 (Main Street). The road will be closed around this intersection from 2 a.m. July 9 (Saturday) through late evening July 10 (Sunday).
All through traffic will be detoured onto State Loop 301 or I-30 frontage roads. Signs will clearly mark the detours for through traffic, TxDOT officials said.
Motorists should pay special attention to all signs, barricades and traffic controls, and reduce their speed as they approach the detours for this work zone. They should also avoid distractions such as cell phones, eating, drinking, or car audio or navigation systems when driving.

Woman Arrested Twice in Three Days
Hopkins County Deputy Scott Davis observed a vehicle with defective headlamps, tail lamps, and license plate light traveling southbound on State Highway 19 Saturday evening. His traffic stop led to the arrest of the driver and two passengers in the auto that had been stolen out of Collin County and finding a large amount of money in the front left pocket of the auto.
Anthony Wayne Sandlin, 35, of Lone Oak was the driver and passengers Samantha Marie Martinez, 18, of Lone Oak, and Charles Roy Lassiter, 39 were arrested after the Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle was confirmed by Collin County. Not only was a large amount of money found in the vehicle but also drug paraphernalia was located in the center console and a green leafy substance thought to be marijuana was found as well.
Martinez had been released on bond from Hopkins County Jail on Friday following her arrest in a narcotics investigation that led to a traffic stop. She was a passenger in an auto driven by Tamera Gayle Davis of Eustace. Davis told officers at the time of the stop that Martinez had a shoe box with narcotics—Hydrocodone, Xanax and Tramadol. The shoe box was in the passenger floorboard. Also in the auto was a suspected quantity of methamphetamine.

Heat Advisory in Effect for Area
Hopkins County and all of Northeast and North Central Texas are under a heat advisory until 8 p.m. Monday, July 4th. Temperatures each afternoon will range between 95 and 100 degrees with heat index values between 104 and 108 today and Monday.
Heat exhaustion or heat stroke can quickly occur to anyone working or participating in outdoor activies.
A heat advisory means that afternoon heat index values are expected to meet or exceed 105 degrees for at least two consecutive days.
Be sure to check on persons with health problems and the elderly, who are most susceptible to heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Never leave young children or pets in an enclosed vehicle, even for a short time. Reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Wear light weight or loose fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water.

Hopkins County Celebrates 25th Annual Independence Day Concert
The 25th Annual Independence Day Celebration Concert was held on Celebration Plaza in Sulphur Springs July 2, 2016. The concert was produced by the Sulphur Springs Symphony League, who presented the Northeast Texas Symphony Orchestra. Dr. Douglas Bakenhus conducted the orchestra, with Bill Owens as Guest Conductor.
Before the orchestra kicked off the 240th anniversary of the United States of America, a watermelon eating contest was held by Alliance Bank next to the Veteran’s Memorial. Contestants were divided into three groups: children under 12, women, and men. The children’s category saw a three-way tie in the first round, with young 11 year old Braden Lennon from Cumby as the winner. In the women’s category, Nohelia Rios from Fairview swept away the competition with an easy victory, and a tie in the first round ended with Jorge Owns from Sulphur Springs taking home the title in the men’s category.
Also, KSST Radio gave away free American Flag kits to ten lucky winners in a drawing which was held throughout the evening. The flag kits were courtesy of KSST Radio 1230 AM and Cable TV Channel 18 and Lowe’s.
The Posting of the Colors was performed by the Hopkins County Military Coalition, and Mayor Emily Glass led the crowd in the Pledge to the Flag. The crowds were treated to a rather patriotic surprise during the final notes of the Star Spangled Banner. As final word was sung, two WWII era USAF planes flew over Celebration Plaza with flawless timing. Shortly after, the Symphony Orchestra began its Musical Program.
The Symphony Orchestra performed the familiar pieces of:
