Tatum Issues Internet Scam Alert

An internet scam alleging that the internet provider is going out of business and wants to refund money that has been paid the internet provider since the customer has signed up with the company has hit locally, according to Sheriff-elect Lewis Tatum. Tatum encourages anyone contacted by the scam to not respond in any manner to their requests.

Tatum says that if you respond the scam will make your bank accounts appear to have all the money taken out. The perpetrators will then attempt to force the victim to send the perpetrators money grams to put the money back into the accounts. “The money grams are the means of defrauding you of your money,” according to Tatum. He stated that the money in your bank account has not disappeared.

Wildcats Prepare for Sherman at Prim Stadium Friday

Wildcats Prepare for Sherman at Prim Stadium Friday

If Wildcats Football Coach Greg Owens had an anxiety closet, what would he find lurking there? One thing would be the loss of a second scrimmage to get ready for the season opener, coming up Friday at Prim Stadium. The Wildcats lost a scrimmage and a week of practice because they participated in spring football in May. Then there are the details that a head coach faces getting ready for the first home game. Another worrisome item might be trying to get ready for the team that you don’t have much info on. Sherman hired a new coach, J.D. Martinez, in February and he brought in an entirely new staff. The only video the Wildcats have of the Martinez-led Bearcats is a scrimmage last Friday at Kennedale. In typical spy versus spy fashion, the Sherman players seemed to wear strange numbers, ones that don’t match their official roster or they wore no numbers at all. Then there is the elephant in the room, or the closet. The trip to Orlando, next week. Coach Owens said he spent two hours on the phone Tuesday on details involving the trip. That’s a large distraction during week one.

Coach Owens does know some things about the Bearcats based on scrimmage observations and video review. He said they have a good offensive line. Some of those linemen also play in a defensive line that is considered the strength of the Sherman defense. Coach Owens is hoping the Wildcats are able to wear down the two-way linemen using an uptempo approach. Coach Owens was also impressed with the Sherman running back and their seasoned quarterback. QB David Bedgood is a senior who the Wildcats have seen for the past three seasons. His running was hurting the Wildcats last year until he was injured. Coach Owens was also impressed with the Bearcats’ safeties on defense. He’s more than ready for some football. Perhaps it will keep him from dwelling on those things in the anxiety closet.

Friday’s game, like all Wildcat football this season, can be heard on KSST 1230 AM and ksstradio.com stream. A replay of each game can be seen on Suddenlink Cable Channel 18 the following Sunday night at 8 p.m. and Tuesday night at 7 p.m. as well as at other times during the week.

TxDOT Implements Child Seat Safety Program

TxDOT Implements Child Seat Safety Program

Childseat safetyPARIS – Texas Department of Transportation safety officials in Northeast Texas today implemented a public program to help parents ensure that their children remain safe when traveling in a vehicle.

“If you see an unrestrained child traveling in a vehicle with Texas license plates, call the hotline and tell us the date, location and license number,” said Monica Freeman, TxDOT traffic safety specialist based in Paris. “We’ll take it from there…the driver will not be ticketed, but we will be in touch to help them get an approved child safety seat.”

The Paris District Please Be Seated hotline number is (903) 737-9290 and callers can remain anonymous, Freeman said. Parents can call the hotline, too, to set up an appointment to have their car seat checked or to have a new one installed. Low-income persons often qualify for a free child safety seat courtesy of TxDOT.

“Also remember that used car seats, ones you get at a garage sale or from family members, may not be safe,” Freeman said. “Child safety seats have an expiration date and shouldn’t be used after that date. They should also be replaced if and when the vehicle is involved in a crash.”

State law requires that children less than 8 years old and shorter than 4’9” travel in passenger vehicles in approved child safety seats. Those older than 8 and taller than 4’9” can travel using adult safety belts. State law also requires every person in a vehicle to be buckled up, regardless of where they are seated.

Freeman is available by appointment Monday through Friday at 1365 N. Main in Paris to help parents check their child safety seats to make sure they are properly installed.

For more information or to make an appointment, contact [email protected] or call (903) 737-9292. The Paris District encompasses Delta, Fannin, Franklin, Grayson, Hopkins, Hunt, Lamar, Rains and Red River counties in Northeast Texas.

Garden Tilled for County Jail Vegetable Garden

As ground was being tilled by equipment furnished by Precinct 4, work began on a county jail vegetable garden located on county land just outside the Sulphur Springs City limits. Hopkins County Sheriff-elect Lewis Tatum is seeking to save the cost of inmate meals by planting a garden that will provide vegetables for the meals. He is also developing a program to raise hogs for meat to feed inmates at meal time.

An acre or more was being plowed Monday with County Precinct 4 equipment. He stated that work in the garden will be carried out daily by inmates under the supervision of Jailer Lee Glenn. Sheriff’s Officer Jase Anglin will oversee the project. The work is being copied after the garden program of the Texas prison system.

In September, inmates will plant peas. In the Spring okra, squash, peas, beans, and an assortment of vegetables will be planted. Tatum also plans to plant corn.
