Wildcats Tennis Get Some Big Wins at Tyler Tourney
Wildcats Tennis Coach Tony Martinez said his team got some big wins in a Tyler Lee tournament Friday that could have a good impact on seeding of Wildcats’ players at an upcoming district meeting about selecting seeds for the district tournament.
Coach Martinez said Wildcats players got wins over players from Hallsville, Greenville and Mt. Pleasant. Coach Martinez was also happy with a win over a Rowlett player. Coach Martinez was very pleased with the play of the boys’ doubles team of Alex Benitez and Jonah Kirkpatrick, the mixed doubles team of Jaspyn Johnson and Tyler Stout and boys singles player Jesse Allen.
The Wildcats return to Tyler Friday for a twelve-team tournament sponsored by John Tyler.
Saltillo Basketball: Lady Lions Advance; Lions Prepare For Playoffs
The Saltillo Lady Lions’ basketball team advanced to the Regional Quarterfinals with an Area round win over Ector, 33-24. The Lady Lions jumped out to a 12-5 first quarter lead in the game. Madison Simmons led the Lady Lions with 9 points. Tori Mobley scored 6 points, Melissa Groenewold and Sienna Collins added 5 points apiece. Jocelyn Ochoa had 3 points and Ana Gallegos 2 points. The Lady Lions will play Slidell next in Trenton in Regional Quarterfinal action.
Meanwhile the Saltillo Lions lost a warm up game for the playoffs against Cross Roads, 46-31. A bad second half did the Lions in as they trailed only 22-21 after the first two quarters. Lyle Bench scored 7 points to lead the Lions. Walker McGill scored 6 points. Trevor Moore and Michael Simmons had 4 points apiece and Clayton Wilson had 2 points. The Lions are now 18-15. They will play the winner of a Tuesday Forestburg and Dodd City game in the playoffs.
Powerlifting Finished First at Quitman
The Wildcats’ powerlifting team had a very strong meet at Quitman Saturday. Wildcats Powerlifting Coach Casey Jeter called it the team’s best meet of the year as the Wildcats finished in first place.
Out of 18 Wildcats’ lifters, 15 finished in the top five and earned a medal. Coach Jeter said every lifter topped their personal record. Five Wildcats finished in first place in their weight class: Alex Rodriguez in the 114 pound weight class, Cason Goodson in the 132 pound weight class, Cor’Tavius Pruitt in the 181 pound weight class, D’Idrec Dugan in the 220 pound weight class and Ian Blanch in the 275 pound weight class. There were four second place finishers: Oscar Yanez in the 114 pound weight class, Isaiah Neal in the 181 pound weight class, Searn Rodgers in the 198 pound weight class and Norris English in the Super Heavy Weight class. Three Wildcats finished third: Carson Bridges in the 165 pound weight class, Vincent Morales in the 181 pound weight class and Ignacio Guerrero in the 242 pound weight class. Three Wildcats also finished fifth in their weight class: George Greenway in the 148 pound weight class, Jose Rodriguez in the 220 pound weight class and Jesus Olivo in the 275 pound weight class. Two Wildcats were sixth: Landry Tyson in the 165 pound weight class and Evan Rushing in the 189 pound weight class.
Wildcats’ lifters who qualify for the regional meet will compete March 4 in Lindale.
Wildcats Athletic Director Greg Owens reported this bit of news Monday. The Wildcats’ golf team finished fourth at a Rockwall sponsored tournament at Sulphur Springs Country Club Friday and Saturday. Alex Motes ended up in second place in the medalist competition and also made a hole in one on the #4 hole at the country club course. We’ll have more details on golf Tuesday.
Peeks, Wright Meet Filing Deadline for Como-Pickton School Board
May 6th will be a busy day for voters in the Como-Pickton school board election.
Kim Attaway Wright and Kyle Peeks filed before the deadline Friday for Como-Pickton School Board.
For the three positions on the board there are now nine candidates. The candidates include incumbents Jim Murray, Greg Anglin, and Mark Humphrey, along with Ronny Nabors, Peeks, Jessica Pegues, Wright, and Brittney Wright Smith.
Como-Pickton has entered the search for a new Superintendent as well.

Woman Arrested For Fighting with Children
Sulphur Springs Police were dispatched to the Best Western Motel on Shannon Road in reference to a disturbance around 2 a.m. Sunday morning. Juveniles involved in the disturbance were sitting in the motel lobby when police arrived.
Ashley Ann Waldon, 38, told officers that she had been arguing with her children all day and the children had called their dad to “…come pick them up.” The officer spoke with the juveniles who stated that the daughter and mother had been in a fight and that the brother “…jumped into the middle of them.” The officer observed scratches on the son’s face and behind his ears and bruising to his right cheek. After the investigation, it was determined that Waldon had been the aggressor. She was arrested at that time.
Waldon is in Hopkins County Jail Charged with Injury Child Criminal Negligence and is being held on a $10,000 bond.
Tyler Woman Charged with Possession of Meth
A traffic stop at FM 69 and State Highway 11 by a Hopkins County Deputy resulted in the arrest of Brandy Franklin, 24 of Tyler for Possession of Controlled Substance Penalty Group 1, less than 1-gram.
Franklin showed signed of nervousness and would not look at the officer when he was speaking to her. A consent to search the vehicle led to a glass pipe commonly used to smoke methamphetamine. Before being asked, Franklin claimed ownership. The pipe had been freshly loaded. Also during the search by a female jailer, a plastic baggie containing suspected methamphetamine was located.
Franklin was booked into Hopkins County Jail and has been released on a $5,000 bond for the state jail felony charge.
Lady Cats Win Four of Five in Home Tourney; At Allen Tourney Next
The Lady Cats’ softball team ended up winning four out of five games in their Sulphur Springs Varsity Softball Tournament including an 8-1 win Saturday over McKinney.
The Lady Cats broke a 1-1 tie with a seven run bottom of the fourth inning. Bailey Haggerty got the win pitching a five inning complete game allowing one run and three hits while striking out ten and walking none. The Lady Cats got six hits but three were very timely. Jaye Doughtie drive in two runs with a single to make the score 3-1. Sadie Stroud and Alli Fite scored. Both had walked. Macee Hollins continued her hot hitting in the tournament and she drove in Doughtie with a single. Hollins was 2 for 2 in the game with two singles. Brinklee Driver capped off the inning in dramatic fashion with a grand slam home run. Driver was 2 for 3 with a run scored and four RBIs.
The Lady Cats are 4-1 for the season. They will play in an Allen tournament this Thursday through Saturday.
Cumby Robotics Win Again!
According to Lee Gifford, spokesperson for Cumby ISD, the robotics teams competed at Berkner High School in Richardson on Feb. 11th and were tournament champions and also won the excellence award.
They will compete at the regional/state competition Feb. 25th in Greenville.
