Get to Know Ms. Texas Senior Classic Patsy Crist
She grew up in Dallas and met her husband through her brother during their Army Days. Today, Gene and Patsy Roan Crist have been married almost 50 years, and Gene is her biggest support in her new role as Ms. Texas Senior Classic.
Patsy Crist was crowned Ms Hopkins County Senior Classic in June 2017, and then won the State title on September 23, 2017. One of her first appearances will be the Texas State Fair Parade on opening day, September 29. First Runner-up Charlotte Graves from Bullard and Talent Winner Linda Pickle-Hill of Hopkins County will join Patsy in waving to the crowds along the parade route. You’ll see her locally during October’s Hopkins County Fall Festival Parade on October 21 followed by the Sulphur Springs Lions Club Christmas Parade on December 1.
Patsy feels that following her child raising years and career roles, this is now “her time to live it up” and she is embracing every opportunity to have fun and meet people. One of her favorite and most helpful outlets has been Red Hat Society meetings and conventions and the talent presentations put on by the Regal Foxy Fillies Chapter of Cumby.
As Ms. Texas Senior Classic, Patsy was bestowed with a crown, sash, trophy and gold-dipped rose scepter. She also took home the trophy for Best Philosophy of Life. Her philosophy is that when every woman decides to discover herself as a person and the depths of her talents, then she is better equipped to give back to her community and other women around her. Entering the Ms Hopkins County Classic Pageant was that turning point for Patsy. Her talent presentation, a take on I Love Lucy’s “Vitameatavegimin”, came from a real love for Lucy Ricardo and a passion for watching the classic episodes. In fact, she has memorized all the dialog in a good number of the episodes.
Wildcat Team Tennis Defeat Heartbreaking
Wildcats Tennis Coach Tony Martinez called Tuesday’s 11-8 district loss to Mt. Pleasant heartbreaking. He said he thought the Wildcats were the better team on paper and he added on paper, he thought his team would win by 2 or 3 matches. A look at the score sheet showed him where the match turned. Coach Martinez said in three critical matches, Wildcats’ girls lost in third set tiebreakers. He said despite playing with lots of heart and courage, the girls came up short in execution. Coach Martinez said the loss might have took the Wildcats out of the playoff picture. He said they might still have an outside shot but they must defeat Greenville on the road next Tuesday and Pine Tree at home the week after that.
Players told Coach Martinez Wednesday morning that they were ready to get back to practice after the loss and were ready to do battle the rest of the way.

Wesley Weir bowled with My Heroes on Saturday, and then the Weir family met at Gloria’s in Rockwall for a late lunch to celebrate Destri’s birthday. The kids played in the water and then they all enjoyed frozen yogurt. Yvonne reports that her grandson, Nicholaas (Destri’s baby boy) is “walking all over now.” The previous Saturday Robert and Yvonne treated Robert’s sisters, Joyce Dodd and Mary Helen Atwood, to lunch at the Alcove and then they shopped at the Vintage Brick Market. Yvonne comments, “We really had a good visit.” Yvonne went to Cooper High School to be with Wesley at the pep rally on Friday the 22nd.
Tiffany Vaughn, Chip Vaughn, and Jaidyn and Kenden Joslin spent the day in Oklahoma on Saturday. They stopped at Clayton Lake on the way to Robbers Cave State Park, where they enjoyed hiking, climbing on the boulders, skipping rocks in the lake, and the kids even swam. They came back through Paris and I met them at the Fish Fry for a delicious meal that evening.
The North Hopkins Alumni Association will have their annual school
homecoming on Saturday, October 14, 2018. Registration and bingo will begin at 4:30, followed by a barbecue meal at 5:30 in the school cafeteria. The cost for the meal is $12.50 per person and may be paid at the door. After the meal there will be a program honoring the Classes of 1967, 1977, and 1987 for their 50-, 40-, and 30-year reunion, and then the Monday Night Jam Band will provide entertainment, while ex-students and guests enjoy listening and visiting. Please help spread the word to all former North Hopkins students and staff.

Lady Cats Volleyball 3-2 in District
It’s a good situation for a coach to have. It seems that no matter who Lady Cats Volleyball Coach Justin Maness puts on the court, they do a good job for him. He said that’s part of the consistency he is seeing now on the court. Coach Maness said Mieke VanBenthem is really finding a rhythm right now. She had a team high 11 kills with no errors in the Lady Cats dominating 3-0 win over Marshall Tuesday night at home.
The Lady Cats won their third straight game and are now 3-2 in district play. Coach Maness said his team missed more serves than he would like to see Tuesday but he did like the twelve aces Lady Cats’ servers had. Several servers had long runs of points. Erika VanBenthem had seven consecutive serves for points and Maggie McGlamery had five. Coach Maness said the solid serving disrupted Marshall’s passing and got them out of their system. The win Tuesday night was the Lady Cats’ twentieth of the season.
Coach Maness said one of his minor goals each year is to win 20 games. He would like to see his team get close to last year’s school record of 30 wins. The Lady Cats play a tough Pine Tree team in Wildcats Gym Friday at 4:30 p.m. Coach Maness wants his team to finish the first half with a win to stay up near the top of the district standings.
Legacy Hospice Set to Boost Blue Santa
Chaplain C.J. Duffey cooks around 25 briskets each year.
Legacy Hospice will once again provide BBQ lunches during the Blue Santa Campaign. During the 2016 event, Legacy sold around 300 lunches. The money raised goes toward the purchase of toys for area children.
Each lunch contains:
- A Duffey chopped brisket sandwich
- chips
- desert
- and water
For a donation of $6.00 per lunch, folks can get their own original Duffey Brisket Sandwich.
The 2017 Event will be at Lowe’s in Sulphur Springs, TX. The dates for donation collection are December 4th and 5th. Bring by cash, new unwrapped toys, or just your appetite.

Wildcat Football District Play To Begin
After winning two and losing two in non-district games, the Wildcats’ football team dives into district play this Friday against Pine Tree at Gerald Prim Stadium. At his weekly news media gathering, Wildcats Football Coach Greg Owens discussed the beginning of district play and taking on Pine Tree. He said he hoped the Wildcats would have a new focus this week but he said you never know with 16 and 17 year old kids. Coach Owens said the weather definitely impacts practice. He said hot weather lowers energy while cool weather makes players giddy but can result in lost focus. Coach Owens said the Wildcats want to win the district championship and he said step one in that process would be defeating Pine Tree Friday. He said the team was still working to get better and be more consistent. Coach Owens said the players had to keep grinding. After days of evaluating personnel, Coach Owens said some players have been moved around. He said competition has been increased at several positions to hopefully improve performance. Coach Owens said it was hard to handicap the district race right now. He said some of the early results depend on who teams have played.
There are several new coaches in the district and he said they are trying to figure things out and see what they have. Coach Owens made it clear the only team in district he knows a lot about is Friday night’s opponent, Pine Tree. He said the Pirates have a big offensive line and he said the Pirates like power football. He compared the Pirates offensive line to ones at Paris and Avalon. The Pirates are expected to use two quarterbacks with different skills. Coach Owens said Pine Tree runs about 70% of the time. Coach Owens said the Pirates defense feature very good defensive ends. One is a speed rusher and the other is very physical. He said their defensive tackles have very good motors. Coach Owens said all the games really count a lot now. Coach Owens lamented the loss to senior running back Cason Goodson who broke a foot against Paris. He said Goodson was having a great year.
Dan Flynn Seeking Re-election

Incumbent State Representative Dan Flynn announced Tuesday night that he will be seeking re-election. Representative Flynn, from Van is currently serving in his sixth term as state representative. He represents several counties including Hopkins County. In a statement, Representative Flynn said he has represented the conservative values of his district consistently and to the best of his ability adding it would be an honor to serve House District 2 for another term. Flynn said his district is looking for solutions, not soundbites: results, not rhetoric. He said he has gotten results. As chair of the House Pensions Committee in the last legislative session, Flynn said he passed legislation to stabilize teacher retirement health care, the Employee Retirement System and pensions systems for both the cities of Dallas and Houston. Flynn said he also authored legislation to require the use of American law on American soil.

Methamphetamine in Pocket Adds Charges

An 18-year old Sherman woman was arrested shortly after 10 p.m. Tuesday September 26th, 2017 for having drugs in the Hopkins County Jail. Jail personnel came to suspect that the woman had narcotics on her person. She was taken to an interview room where she admitted having 1.4 grams of methamphetamine in the pocket of her jail shirt. She said she hid the drugs when she was booked into the jail earlier in connection with a theft case from Wal-Mart involving several other people. Madison Marie Olivia Darst was charged with having an illegal substance in a correctional facility, possession of a controlled substance and engaging in organized criminal activity in the theft case. JP Brad Cummings set bonds totaling $40,000.
