Hudgins Nets Hat Trick In Lady Cats Soccer Home Opener

The Lady Cats’ soccer team won their regular season home opener at new Gerald Prim Stadium, 3-0 over Tyler Chapel Hill Tuesday evening. It was a really big night for Lady Cat Keeley Hudgins, who scored all three Lady Cat goals for a hat trick. Taylor Robinson and Gracie Boyer had assists.

Boyer’s occurred as she deflected a Maleena Zirretta crossing pass to Hudgins who scored the goal.

The Lady Cats improved their season record to 8 wins, 2 losses and 3 ties. The Tuesday game was the Lady Cats’ last one before district play begins. The Lady Cats open district play at Pine Tree Friday at 7 p.m.

Texas High 76, Wildcats Basketball 67

The #7 ranked Wildcats’ basketball express, rolling all season long, was derailed Tuesday evening as the Wildcats lost at Texas High, 76-67. Wildcats Coach Clark Cipoletta said the Tigers just outplayed the Wildcats from the opening tip off. Godsgift Ezedinma led the Wildcats with 22 points. Keaston Willis scored 16. Victor Iwuakor had 14 points. Day Day Hall scored 6, Michael Jefferson had 3 and Dedric Godbolt and Grayson McClure scored 2 points each. The loss was a costly one for the Wildcats. They fall into a virtual tie for first place with Mount Pleasant with one district loss apiece. The Wildcats have a bye Friday while Mount Pleasant hosts Texas High. The Wildcats-Mount Pleasant rematch comes upnext Tuesday in Wildcats Gym. The Wildcats got a big win in Mount Pleasant, 57-54 back on January 12. The Wildcats are now 8-1 in district play. Their season record is now 25-4. The Texas High loss was the Wildcats’ first this season against a Class 5A team. The Wildcats other three losses were all to state ranked Class 6A teams.

Texas High 68, Lady Cats Basketball 37

The #9 ranked Lady Cats’ basketball team picked a real bad time to have an off night. The Texas High Lady Tigers put on a tenacious press that forced the Lady Cats to turn the ball over time and time again. Early the Lady Cats hung in there and they trailed only 15-12 after the first quarter. In the second quarter with point guard Sadavia Porter on the bench strapped with foul trouble, the Lady Tigers build a 12 point lead. Still the Lady Cats fought back and they trailed only 27-24 at half time. The Lady Cats scored the first three points of the third quarter and the game was tied 27-27. The Lady Cats then suffered a game altering scoring drought. Texas High went on a 20-0 run to make it 47-27. The game only got worse from that point. Both the Lady Cats and Lady Tigers now have one district loss. Mount Pleasant is lurking with two district losses. The Lady Cats have a bye Friday while Mount Pleasant plays at Texas High. The Lady Cats conclude district play as they have their rematch with Mount Pleasant next Tuesday at Mount Pleasant. The Lady Cats defeated Mount Pleasant at home, 68-33 on January 12. Against Texas High, Kaylee Jefferson led the Lady Cats with 19 points. Imani Taylor scored 8 points. Porter and Autumn Tanton had 5 points apiece. The stats for the Lady Cats were bleak. They shot only 31% from the field including 0 for 3 from three point range. They did manage 60% from the free point line making 15 of 25 charity tosses. The Lady Cats had only 7 assists, just 4 deflections and only 5 steals. They had 32 turnovers. The Lady Cats did have 37 rebounds with Jefferson getting 18 and Danielle Godbolt 12. Tuesday night’s loss occurred on Senior Night for the Lady Cats. Before the Texas High game, the Lady Cats recognized three seniors: Taylor, Jamia Hall and Jefferson. The Lady Cats are now 10-1 in district play and 24-4 for the season.

North Hopkins Homecoming Reveal

The results are in, and a new king and queen have been crowned. The North Hopkins homecoming was held Friday January 26, 2018 where the Panthers defended there home court against the Dallas Gateway Gators. The junior varsity boys went into overtime winning the game with a final score of 24-23 and the varsity girls won their game 69-5. The varsity boys game had every fighting Panther fan on their feet with a close game that rolled into double overtime. The varsity boys played hard and took home a win in the last few seconds of the game scoring 50-48.

2018 Homecoming Queen Niza Garcia and Homecoming King Angel Aguilar

The excitement continued with the presentation of the homecoming court after the game with the queen from the previous year, Victoria Wilburn, presenting the crowns. Out of four candidates Niza Garcia was crowned homecoming queen and Angel Aguilar was crowned North Hopkins first homecoming king.

The Hopkins County Marine Corp League # 1357 donated $300 to the Senior Citizens Center Building Fund. Derb Goodman, left, and Garry Hall, right, presented the donation to Karon Weatherman. The donation increases the Building Fund total to $32,373.71.

Wildcats Finish Second at Emory Powerlifting Meet

The Wildcats’ powerlifting team, competing against 17 schools and 250 lifters, finished in second place at an Emory Rains meet last Saturday. Wildcats Coach Casey Jeter said he was proud of how the Wildcats competed. He noted that the Wildcats, with 35 points, missed out on first place by a single point.

For the Wildcats, Ian Blanch took first place in the 242 pound weight class with a total lift of 1485 pounds. Alex Rodriguez was second in the 123 pound weight class with a total of 795 pounds. Carson Bridges was second in the 165 pound weight class with a 1145 total. Vincent Morales was second in the 181 pound weight class with 1225 total. D’Idrec Dugan was second in the 242 pound weight class with 1440 total. Jo’ell Morales was third in the 148 pound weight class with 1020 pounds. Damiyon Dugan was fourth in the 148 pound weight class with 970 total. Ignacio Guerrero was fourth in the 275 pound weight class with 1180 total. Jesus Olivo was fourth in the Super Heavy Weight class with 1275 pounds. Andy Eddins was fifth in the 148 pound weight class with 960 total. George Greenway was fifth in the 165 pound weight class with 1070 pounds. Alex Medina was fifth in the 275 pound weight class with 1150 pounds.

Basketball:

Both the #7 ranked Wildcats and the #9 ranked Lady Cats’ basketball teams have important district games with Texas High on the Tuesday game day.

The Wildcats will travel to Texarkana. They have a freshman game at 5 p.m., a JV game at 6:15 p.m. and the varsity game at 7:30 p.m. The Wildcats enter the game with an 8-0 district mark. They are 25-3 for the season. The Wildcats have won seven games in a row. They are coming off an unusual Marshall game that saw the Mavs go into a half court delay game at the start of the game. Despite that the Wildcats led 20-0 at the half on their way to a 52-25 win. The first game this season against Texas High at home, the Wildcats won, 63-48.

It is senior night for the Lady Cats as they play host to Texas High in a very big game with huge district implications. The Lady Cats will honor three seniors: Imani Taylor, Jamia Hall and four-year varsity player Kaylee Jefferson, an East Carolina commit. The Lady Cats come into the big game 10-0 in district play and 24-3 for the season. Texas High is right behind the Lady Cats in the district standings. The two teams have played each other twice this season: the Lady Tigers won at the Winnsboro Hoopfest on December 1, 46-38. The Lady Cats won a district game at Texarkana on January 5, 47-44. In both games, the Lady Cats led going into the fourth quarter. The Lady Cats are coming into this game having survived a 41-37 game at Marshall last Friday. We will bring you all the action of the Lady Cats and Texas High senior night game live on KSST Radio at around 7:30 p.m. We will also videotape the game for replay at a later date on Channel 18 on Suddenlink Cable.

Soccer, Softball

There is also soccer and softball on this Tuesday game day.

The Lady Cats’ soccer team will have their regular season home opener at new Gerald Prim Stadium Tuesday night. The Lady Cats play Chapel Hill. The Lady Cats defeated them, 1-0 in a Paris tournament back on January 12. The Lady Cats have a season record of 7-2-3. They have not played since January 20. A planned January 23 varsity game at Lindale was canceled after Lady Cats Coach Joel Bailey and several of his players came down with the flu. On this game day at The Prim, there will be a JV game at 5 p.m. with a varsity game at 6:30 p.m.

The Lady Cats’ softball team also has their opening scrimmage on this Tuesday game day. The scrimmage was supposed to be at Lady Cat Park but it is still being renovated. The scrimmage action moves to Forney where the Lady Cats will scrimmage the Lady Jackrabbits and Canton. The scrimmage gets underway with varsity action at 4:30 p.m.

SSISD Conducts Annual Report of Educational Performance in Public Hearing February 12

Sulphur Springs Independent School District will hold a public hearing on Monday, February 12, 2018 at 6:00 pm for the purpose of discussing the Annual Report of Educational Performance and the Texas Academic Performance Report (TAPR) for the 2016-2017 school year, according to Rusty Harden, Assistant Superintendent-Human Resources/Support Services.

The hearing will be held in conjunction with the regularly scheduled meeting of the Board of Trustees. The meeting will be held at the administration building located at 631 Connally St., Sulphur Springs, TX 75482.

The Sulphur Springs High School Wildcat UIL Academic Team traveled to Mt. Pleasant this past weekend, January 26 – 27 and finished 2nd place overall at the Mt. Pleasant Winter UIL Invitational meet. Monday February 5th is Last Day to Register to Vote in March Primary

Monday February 5th is the last day to register to vote in the March, 2018 Primary. Early voting begins February 20th with March 2nd the final day for early voting. March 6 is primary election day for Republicans and Democrats.

Registered voters over the age of 65 are receiving mailings that allow the voter to request a ballot by mail as the March Primary election season begins. Those requesting ballot by mail may request only the ballot specific to the party primary, Democrat or Republican, in which the voter wishes to cast the ballot. Last day to accept application for a ballot by mail is Friday, February 23rd.

The Early Voting location for the March Primary for all Hopkins County voters who wish to cast a ballot in either primary election is the Justice of the Peace Precinct 2 Courtroom, 128 Jefferson Street. An entrance to the courtroom is located at the west parking lot of tax office/JP county annex.

On March 6th all county polling places will be open. On March 6th, Hopkins County voters may cast their ballot at any of the polling places. Early voting is 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. February 20-March 2. Early voting is available on Saturday, February, 24th  from 8 .am. until 5 p.m. and Sunday February 25th from noon until 5 p.m.
