Local Man Arrested for Theft of Firearms

A call to Hopkins County deputies reported a Sunday morning theft of three firearms from vehicles in the 1000 block of Country Club Road. According to the owner of the firearms, Jarritt Kyle Stroud, 27, of Sulphur Springs, had been at the location that morning but had not been invited. Deputies also learned of a warrant for his arrest out of Rains County.

Deputies located Stroud on the sidewalk at Caps and Flasks on Davis Street in Sulphur Springs. He admitted to having two of the stolen firearms in his room at his home on Gilmer Street. At the residence, the deputies found the firearms on Stroud’s bed, according to investigators.

Stroud is in Hopkins County jail charged with two counts of Theft of a Firearm, a State Jail Felony. He is also held on the Rains County warrant for DWI.

Miller Grove News November 27, 2017

Another Thanksgiving come and gone.  Who would have guessed that I over ate at all three of the Thanksgiving meals that I had?  The Sunday before the holiday my mother’s side of the family had their traditional meal at Brashear Baptist Church Family Life Center.  We had 92 in attendance but did miss a few of our cousins that were unable to make it.  I also had a great meal at work on Wednesday and then cooked a large spread of food for my family on Thanksgiving Day.  Needless to say I’m ready to take a break from cooking and eat out a few meals!  I hope everyone out there had as good of a Thanksgiving as I did!

Since my last writing quite a bit has gone on in Miller Grove.  The Fall Carnival at the school went very well.  We ran out of chili about half way and by the end of the night we were pretty much out of stew.  The Garrett brothers (Bret & Mark) teamed up and make a good chicken stew that day.  Despite the carnival being on a Thursday night the PTO still made over $6000.  I never did hear how much the combined total that the each of the PK-12th grade classes made from that night but I’m sure they did well.  A word of thanks to all of the folks that came out that night.  It was good to see so many friends and family during the chaos that night but proud our school had lots of support.

MG’s athletic department has been excelling in Cross Country and Volleyball this fall.  The Lady Hornets volleyball team earned the title of Regional Quarter-Final Champs after their win against Leverett’s Chapel.  The Regional Semi-Finals took place in Fort Worth with the girls winning a Friday night game against Spurger.  Saturday, however, was a different story.  The ladies played Trinidad and held their own until the last set, ending the final game with the score in favor of the opponent.  Even though we didn’t get the honor of winning state, our girls did a great job and we should be proud of each of them for their hard work.  Team members include Jaylah Roberson, Lauren Bullard, Alexa Pelerose, Harli Watson, Katie Williams, Alexis Green, Alexis Serrano, Cara Ford, Rosa Schones and Demi Weatherford.  Demi, being a senior, will be the only one of this great team to graduate in May so I look forward to making it this far again next year with these talented young ladies.

Another win for the Hornets was during Cross Country season.  Our boys’ team came home with 1st in state honors and the girls were slated as 2nd in state.  Individually, Jorja Bessonett, gained the title of 1st in state with her 12:01 run at the state cross country meet in Roundrock.  Not too bad for our 1A school, I must say!  I’m also proud to say that these guys and girls were recognized by Judge Robert Newsome on Nov. 13 with a proclamation that was presented on the courthouse steps.

Veteran’s Day is another time our students displayed their community involvement.  They had their annual Veteran’s breakfast for the community.  The breakfast was organized by the MGHS National Honor Society and the Junior High Student Council.  From what I could tell there was a good turn-out for the morning meal and short program that followed.

Please remember to keep the family of Junior Potts in your prayers after his recent passing.  We also need to lift up Sonia Earp’s mother, Johnny Ferguson, Stephanie Bullard, and my niece Savanna Darrow.  My niece has had her tonsils removed and is much better but still not back to her full strength.

I’m proud to see that Spencer and Dianne (Sparks) Wicks have their metal house up and starting to move things in.  I know they are proud to have it near completion.  As you drive around the community you can see several new houses and several plots of land that have changed hands in the last few months.

Miller Grove PTO will be sponsoring a chili cook-off during our annual basketball tournament that will be held Saturday, Dec. 2, in the high school gym.  To enter there is a $25 fee with a chance to win $125!  The prize amounts are $125 for first place, $75 for second place, and $50 for third place.  The chili entries will be judged around 11:15 am that day and all entries are due no later than 11:00 am.  After the judging, all-you-can-eat tickets will be sold for $10 per adult and $5 per child.  Also, be sure to label your crock pot with your name on the bottom.  For more information please contact Sonia Earp or Stacie Wilbur.  This particular fundraiser will go toward the purchase of state rings for our Cross Country students.

As you travel the highways and byways, don’t forget that all roads lead back home and back to Miller Grove.  Please send me any newsworthy information.  My email address is [email protected].

Christmas in the Park: A Must See For All

Christmas in the Park: A Must See For All

Christmas in the Park is at Heritage Park, 416 N. Jackson street. If you haven’t ventured out to check out Heritage Park mark your calendar for December 2nd. History, Snacks, Music, and Christmas combine to bring you a holiday experience like no other. Learn about printing presses, old fire engines, black smithing, and more. There are talented carolers, and in the old church building you can find amazing architecture and beautiful christmas music.

The park had many visitors on Nov. 25th and everyone seemed to be having a great time. Brenda and Ed Payne were manning the old post office. They’ve been working at the heritage museum for 20 years and enjoy reliving the past. Ed’s favorite part is the old tools in the shed house.

Bob McClure played classic christmas tunes on his dulcimer. He got started playing the dulcimer 18 years ago when he and his wife were at Mary of Puddin Hill and he said “That is such a beautiful sound, I have to know what that is!” He found the guy and has been playing ever since.

Ron Siebler was teaching people how to blacksmith. He used traditional coal to heat the steel and facinated the crowds while he twisted and hammered the metal. The kids excitedly watched as sparks flew after Ron had placed water on the anvil creating a “blacksmith’s firecracker”.

Long lines were outside the dog run house at the back of the property where Santa and his elf Michael were taking pictures with good boys and girls. There was hot cocoa, apple cider, coffee, cookies and popcorn available at each building. The general Store housed perfect Christmas gift items.

At only $3 per person and children 7 and under free this hometown event is completely worth the price.

Local Retailers Enjoy Brisk Business In Preparation for “Small Business Saturday”

Many local retailers reported brisk business on Black Friday around Sulphur Springs, as they prepare for small business Saturday on November 25th.   Gourmet Kitchen & Co, at 213 Main Street, was bustling with folks Friday afternoon, as there was increased foot traffic around the downtown area.   Lou Nell’s Fashions, at 122 Lee Street, was also reporting increased activity on Friday.   Both stores were hoping for an increase in sales on Saturday as customers turn out for Small Business Saturday which is a campaign by American Express to encourage shoppers to frequent the locally owned retailers.

A Brief History of Black Friday

A Brief History of Black Friday

By Savannah Owens

The day after Thanksgiving, commonly called Black Friday and regarded as the first day for many people’s Christmas shopping.  The term was first used to describe a stockmarket crash in September of 1869.

The first instances of the term “Black Friday” being used to describe the day after thanksgiving was in 1950’s Phillidelphia. Police officers worked non-stop to try and regulate the massive shopping crowds, as well as keep shopliffters from getting away.

Then in the 1980’s “Black Friday” refers to when companies “go into the black” and make profits due to the huge influx of  shopping. Companies that might spend the whole year “in the red” not making money focus their energy into the after Thanksgiving sales preparing for the early Christmas Shoppers.

Now days, “the one-day sales bonanza has morphed into a four-day event” including: Small Business Saturday/Sunday and Cyber Monday. Some stores even open as early as 5:00 or 6:00 pm Thanksgiving night, and many people are no strangers to waiting in lines outside to catch the best deals. For more on the history of Black Friday click here.

In Sulphur Springs, Walmart was packed Thanksgiving evening and again today with people purchasing their christmas gifts and finding good deals. Lowes has also promoted sales for their Black Friday events.  Marlene’s Sass and Class Boutique will be open until 8:00 pm.

Are you planning on fighting the crowds for something special? KSST would love to hear from you!
