Sulphur Springs UIL One Act Play: Violet Sharp

Sulphur Springs UIL One Act Play: Violet Sharp

By Savannah Owens

March 4 , 2018 – The UIL One Act Play (OAP) has been around since 1927. The competition and productions have strict sets of regulations. The term “One Act” refers to how the curtain remains open through the entire 18-40 minute play and there cannot be an intermission. For more information on the UIL competition click here.

This year, Sulphur Springs High School’s OAP was Violet Sharp by William Cameron. There was a public performance on Sunday, March 4th, at 2:00 pm. There were standout performances by all thirteen actors. Here are a few highlights of the event!

Violet Sharp is based on the 1932 Lindbergh Kidnapping case, and centers around the timid British maid Violet Sharp, performed by Brianna Isbam. Violet worked for the Lindbergh’s and was one of the main suspects in their son’s disappearance, arousing suspicions from the police after her alibis and stories from that fateful night continued to contradict each other.

The stubborn Police Captain Harry Walsh, portrayed by Dusty Merrell, was determined to get to the bottom of the crime. Merrell seemed to internalize the role as he confronted the other actors, questioning their motives, and adding to the mounting tension of the play.

Sarah Harper portrayed the role of Betty Gow, the nursemaid to Charles Jr, and confidante of Violet. The witty and kindhearted secretary to the Lindbergh family, Laura Hughes, was portrayed by Rachel Bramlett.  Harper and Bramlett were very believable in their roles, their facial expressions, as well as dialogue delivery throughout the play. They were perfect fits for their characters.

Reigning Dairy Festival Queen, Jaci Reed played the part of Adela, the upscale reporter with the scoop on the happenings around the disappearance.

The play kept the audience on the edge of their seats with dramatic plot twists and hints of scandal. One of these plot twists included the stoic and proper butler, Septimus Banks, portrayed by Nathan Braddy.

All in all this was an outstanding performance from the Sulphur Springs High school Theatre Department.

Wildcat Baseball Ends Lindale Tournament WithWin

The Wildcats’ baseball team wrapped up play at Lindale’s Robbie Surratt Memorial Tournament with a 5-3 win over host Lindale Saturday (March 3) night. The Wildcats won 1 and lost 3 during the tournament but Wildcats Coach Jerrod Hammack was so pleased with the win over a good Lindale team, he said it almost made him forget three poor earlier defeats in the tourney.

Saturday night, the Wildcats used good pitching and timely hitting to defeat the Eagles. Ryan Humphries went five innings to get the win. He allowed only 3 hits and 2 runs with only 1 run earned. Humphries walked 5 and struck out 3. Pacen Edwards threw the final two innings earning a save giving up only 1 hit and 1 run while striking out 1 and walking 1. The Wildcats scored 5 runs on 5 hits. Triston McCormick was 2 for 4 with 3 RBIs and 2 doubles. Humphries was 1 for 4 with 2 runs scored and an RBI. Dawson Draper drove home a run on a sacrifice fly. Kaden Argenbright walked 3 times in 4 at bats. Courtesy runner Connor Burgin scored two runs. Jaxon Chaney was 2 for 4 with 2 doubles. The Wildcats broke a scoreless tie with 3 runs in the top of the third inning with only 1 hit. Austin Dodd and Argenbright walked. A wild pitch moved Dood and courtesy running Burgin up a base. Humphries struck out but the ball got away from the Eagles’ catcher and he made it to first. McCormick drove home Dood and Burgin with a double down the left field line. Draper’s fly ball out scored Humphries. Lindale scored a third inning run without a hit. The Wildcats had two errant throws in the inning that led to the run scoring. The Wildcats were up 3-1 after three innings. The Wildcats increased their lead to 5-1 with 2 runs in the top of the fifth. Argenbright walked and courtesy runner Burgin advanced to second on a wild pitch. Humphries singled up the middle to score Burgin. McCormick doubled off the left field wall scoring Humphries. Lindale cut the lead to 5-2 with another run without a hit. They used a walk, two ground balls that advanced the runner and a wild pitch to score. Lindale added a final run in the bottom of the seventh. They used a walk, a ground ball that advanced the runner and an RBI single.

In the tournament, the Wildcats lost to Atlanta, 5-3 on Thursday (March 1). Their first game Friday (March 2), they lost to The Brook Hill School. The Wildcats scored seven first inning runs and then went into a shell on offense. Meanwhile Brook Hill chipped away and kept scoring until they had a 13-7 win. Coach Hammack said the Wildcats put 16 Brook Hill batters on base without a hit either by walks or errors. Later Friday the Wildcats lost to All Saints Episcopal School of Tyler, 7-2.

Despite those losses, Coach Hammack felt the Lindale win Saturday night was one the team could build upon. The Wildcats will play in a Sherman-Denison Tournament Thursday through Saturday (March 8-10). District play begins the following week.

Aviation History: VC-137C 85-6974 (SAM 974)

Aviation History: VC-137C 85-6974 (SAM 974)
This Boeing 707-382B (c/n 20297/836) was originally delivered to TAP Air Portugal as CS-TBF in February 1970. It was sold to Buffalo Airways as N105BV in November 1983. It was finally seized by the U.S. Government from smugglers in 1985 and turned over to the USAF in October 1985.

Buffalo Airways N105BV arrived at E-Systems 30 September 1985 and departed to Andrews AFB on 24 March 1988 as C-137C 85-6974. The airplane was disassembled and completely overhauled to zero time with interior and communication system installation. All systems were functionally checked, exterior painted and completed several test flights.
On 24 March 1988, the 89th MAW at Andrews Air Force Base cheered the arrival of its newest aircraft  C-137C tail number 85-6974. SAM 974 was similar to the two Presidential VC-137C aircraft currently in the fleet. However, the retrofitted aircraft was to be used for special air missions for the Vice-President, members of the Cabinet, Congressional leaders and other senior United States and foreign dignitaries.
SAM 974 was a modified version of the Boeing 707-320 commercial airliner, and was specially equipped for the 89th mission. It had a new technologically advanced communication suite. This communications system was a prototype for the two new VC-25A Boeing 747 “Air Force One” delivered in late 1988 and early 1989. The Communications system provided passengers with global communications capabilities, whether airborne or on the ground.
SAM 974 was scrapped in June of 2004 after many years of service at Andrews Air Force Base.

The included information comes from local Sulphur Springs resident Tony Hughes. Mr. Hughes worked on, performed engine run up, pre-flight/post flight and flew as an aircraft mechanic observer on FCF’s (functional check flight), along with supervising hangar and flight line operations for over 40 years (1956-1996) at the Greenville, Tx. plant, formerly known as TEMCO. The Greenville plant started as Temco (Texas Engineering & Manufacturing Co.) and changed to Ling-Temco Electronics, Inc. in 1960, then Ling-Temco-Vought, Inc. in 1961. The company changed again to LTV Electrosystems, Inc. in 1965, and E-Systems, Inc. in 1972. In 1995 a merger changed the name to Raytheon/E-Systems, and now the company has been managed by L-3 Communications since 2002.
