Aviation History: What ever happened to the eleven ?

Eleven C-140Bs were assigned to the Military Airlift Command. They were flown as VC-140B’s on special government and White House airlift missions by the 89th Military Airlift Wing at Andrews AFB, Maryland.

The VC-140B’s were capable and versatile, but by the early 1980’s the Air Force was looking for a replacement. JetStars were out of production and spares were getting expensive. The JetStar was also not as fuel efficient as newer designs.

The first VC-140B JetStar arrived at E-Systems for Depot Maintenance in 1973 and the last VC-140B was delivered from E-Systems to Andrews AFB in March 1986.

After replacement of the VC-140B’s at Andrews AFB they are now located as follows:

61-2488, entered service in October 1961 and was the first VC-140B delivered to the USAF. 61-2488 was transferred to The Museum of Aviation next to Robins Air Force Base, Warner Robins, GA. It is In immaculate condition at the Warner Robins AFB Museum.

61-2489 Was transferred to Tucson Pima Air and Space Museum in Tucson, Arizona. It is on display at Pima Air Museum.

61-2490 Was delivered to the USAF in December 1961 and served presidents until 1978 when it was transferred to Executive Support. The aircraft was retired in 1987 with 17,699 flight hours. 61-2490 was transferred to National Park Service, Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park, Johnson City, TX where it is on display.

61-2491 Was used as a battle damage airframe at Rhine-Main before being scrapped.

61-2492 Delivered to the USAF in July 1962. This Jetstar was used as a Presidential transport, and occasionally used the “Air Force One” call sign whenever a President was onboard. 61-2492 came to Wright-Patterson AFB after 26 years of service in July 1987, and now resides in the Presidential Gallery hangar on display.

61-2493 Was stored at DMA (Davis-Monthan AFB) & scrapped at DMA in April 2001.

62-4197 Was transferred to Tucson Pima Air and Space Museum in Tucson, Arizona. Converted into a work of art as part of Pima’s Boneyard Project.

62-4198 Was scrapped at Mildenhall in January 1992.

62-4199 Was stored at DMA (Davis-Monthan AFB) & scrapped at DMA in April 2001.

62-4200 Was transferred to Tucson Pima Air and Space Museum in Tucson, Arizona. On display at Pima Air Museum.

62-4201 Was transferred to Hill Aerospace Museum, Hill Air Force Base, Ogden, Utah. A/C has been restored and displayed with the markings of one of the U.S. Presidential aircraft.

The included information comes from local Sulphur Springs resident Tony Hughes. Mr. Hughes worked on, performed engine run up, pre-flight/post flight and flew as an aircraft mechanic observer on FCF’s (functional check flight), along with supervising hangar and flight line operations for over 40 years (1956-1996) at E-Systems, Inc., the Greenville, Tx. plant formerly known as TEMCO.

Lady Cats District Champs in Senior Night Win

The Lady Cats’ softball team wrapped up the district championship with a 7-5 victory over Mount Pleasant on a big Friday night that included Senior Night and dedication of renovated Lady Cat Park.

It was anything but an easy victory. The Lady Cats went on top 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning on a Kelsey Wallace home run way over the left field wall. The Lady Tigers tied the game at 1-1 scoring with a double, a passed ball, a walk and a fielder’s choice ground out. Mount Pleasant then took the lead with two runs in the top of the third using an RBI single and a fielder’s choice ground out. The Lady Cats roared back with four runs in the bottom of the third to go up 5-3. Alyssa Abron doubled and scored on a Wallace single. Brinklee Driver walked. Abbi Baier ran for Driver. Wallace scored on a Sadie Stroud double. Alli Fite’s sacrifice fly scored Baier. Kate Womack then singled and scored on a Sierra Smith double. The Lady Cats went up 7-3 with two more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Abron and Wallace walked to start a two out rally. Driver’s single scored Abron and Stroud’s single scored Wallace. Then the Lady Cats just held off the Lady Tigers. Mount Pleasant cut the lead to 7-5 in the bottom of the sixth with a two run home run by Lauren Lesher. In the top of the seventh with two outs, the Lady Tigers sent the tying run to the plate after a Carson Zachry double. Kamille Gill hit a hard ground ball to shortstop and Lady Cat Kelsey Wallace threw a strike to first baseman Driver to end the threat and give the Lady Cats the win and their district championship.

Bailey Haggerty got the pitching win allowing 4 earned runs and 8 hits while striking out three and walking three.

The Lady Cats improved their season record to 24-5 and they ended district play with a district best 11-1 record. The outright district championship is the first for Lady Cats Coach David Carrillo in his twelve years in Sulphur Springs. His Lady Cats shared a title with Texas High in 2009. The Lady Cats last won a sole district championship in the early 2000’s when they won three in a row for then head coach John McCullough.

The Lady Cats now face Lovejoy in a bi-district series next week with details still to be determined.

A Chance to Visit Heritage Park and See Amazing Art for FREE: TODAY, Saturday April 21st

By: Savannah Owens

The 6th Annual Heritage Park Youth Art Show Exhibition is on display at the Heritage Park Chapel, Today, Saturday April 21st, from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. Susan Carey, Hopkins County Historical Society Member, is leading the exhibit.  The exhibit is completely free for the public to view. “This is one of the few times it is totally free to visit the park” Carey said. The art is inspirational, thought provoking, and fun to view.

The artwork, submitted by middle and high school art students from all over Hopkins County and open to all students. The schools represented include: North Hopkins, Cumby, Brightstar, Como-Pickton, Sulphur Springs, Sulphur Bluff, Miller Grove, and some home schooled students.  Many of the students are involved in an AP art class. Carey mentioned “The Brightstar art teacher, Sarah James, is just getting started with the art [program] but Brightstar almost gives Sulphur Springs a run for their money. North Hopkins and Sulphur Springs already have strong programs but the other schools are catching up fast!”

Stop by to see even more of the artwork not captured in these photographs!

There are many different categories ranging from charcoal drawings, to 3D painted sculptures. Carey said that some years they’ve even had “ceramics, jewelry, wood things, [and] mosaics.” This year they had some beautiful submissions in photography. “You never know what’s gonna come through the door.” Carey joked. They are hoping to continue to expand the program if the Society can raise enough funds for the new building, which will include a banquet/exhibit hall which will allow them to host an even bigger show next year!

This Year Best in Show goes to Kateryna Takaromoya, 10th grader, for creating this drawing. Her technique impressed the judges as the light reflecting in the shadows is “very advanced and difficult to do well.” Congratulations Kateryna.

There are usually 2-3 judges that are all professionals in the industry, sometimes it’s an art teacher, professional painter, or gallery dealer.  Carey explained that Jerry Lee and Mike Elliot have been “very generous with their time and advice” on this exhibit.

Carlie Penson, Treasurer, exclaimed “The artwork is amazing!” The descriptions on the artwork provide more information to the thought behind these creative pieces. The attention to detail in all of these pieces is wonderful! There are portraits, landscapes, still life paintings, drawings, sculptures, and more!

This sculpture is called “Sewing Tractor” and was created out of an old sewing machine, a spoon, and gears.

This piece was created to combine the artists “favorite color and favorite animal”.

A secret about this piece is the small reflection of a piano, and violin in the eyes.

Students may pick up their art pieces until 5:00 pm Saturday, April 21st.
