Carter Blood Care Needs Donations in N E Texas Region
Why are donations of all types of blood needed more during the summer and vacation months? Let’s find out!

Lanie Wright, a consultant with Carter Blood Care in the Tyler Regional office, visited on the KSST Good Morning Show with Enola Gay to talk about the importance of giving donations of blood, especially during the summer months. Lanie stressed that while the need for blood increases during the vacation and holiday periods due to accidents on the roadways and elsewhere, the volume of blood donations actually goes down in the summer due to vacations and school being out for high school and college students. Students age 16 and older provide about 30% of blood donations on the average, according to Carter Blood Care.
All types of blood…O Positive and Negative, B Positive and Negative, A and AB…are in demand all the time. Donations of type O Negative are especially sought as this blood type can be utilized by persons with any type of blood, and by emergency victims whose blood type may not be known.
Fighting the disease of cancer takes a lot of blood too. “Cancer doesn’t take a break” for children and adults in hospitals across our region in need of healthy blood.
The average daily need of Carter Blood Care’s Northeast Texas Region requires 1,000 donors per day. Often, they reach that goal, and stores of blood and platelets are usually ample. Frequently, up to five blood drives per day are conducted in the Tyler region alone. Just one unit of blood can save three persons. However, Carter Blood Care wants to remind you that your “gift of life” is more than that. You are asked to “give for life” which means donate blood often. Healthy donors can give a unit of blood every 56 days, and “avid donors” do just that.
Recently, a “Battle of the Badges” took place, a friendly competition between first responders and City of Sulphur Springs employees. This contest yeilded 44 units of blood, collected at the Carter Blood Care mobile unit on the Jay Hodge Chevrolet dealership lot. Lanie gives us a “thumbs up” for the generosity of the local donors. Contested Sentencing Hearing Begins Wednesday in Eighth Judicial District Court
A contested sentencing hearing gets underway Wednesday morning at 9 a.m. in Eighth Judicial District Court. Victoria Grace Brawley, 26, of Azle, who has pled guilty in May to three indictments for Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon faces a range of punishment from probation to 20 years in each case. Sentences are expected to run concurrent if she is sentenced to prison.
Brawley has remained in jail since her arrest on December 18, 2017. She was arrested for Intoxication Assault following her involvement as a driver in a two vehicle accident that injured three adults and one child. She told a DPS Trooper that she was driving the Crown Vic that crashed into a minivan. The trooper detected the odor of alcoholic beverage coming from her person at the scene of the accident. The trooper also noted her slurred speech and difficulty maintaining her balance. She refused to provide a breath sample and a blood warrant was obtained. All three adults in the van were transported via helicopter to metroplex hospitals with incapacitating injuries.
According to her defense attorney, Martin Braddy, Brawley has struggled with drug and alcohol addiction for her entire life. Her family was supportive as evidenced in the presence of over 10 family members in the courtroom as she pled to the charges.

Krantz for Congress Presents Petition to Ratcliffe

[Editor’s Note: Texas Congressional District 4 includes Hopkins and all or part of counties in Northeast Texas}
Rockwall, TX— Democratic nominee Catherine Krantz (D-Emory) for US House of Representatives TX04, has started a petition urging incumbent Rep. John Ratcliffe (R-Heath) to stand up for human decency and “take a public and urgent stance to end the policy of Family Separation at our borders.” The petition further states that “Regardless of political affiliation, Americans believe in human dignity and the fair treatment of children… We stand with the children and we ask that you do as well.”
This petition received over 200 signatures in just one day and she plans to hand deliver it to Rep, Ratcliffe’s Rockwall office Tuesday June 19, at 10am, at 6531 Horizon Rd Suite A, Rockwall TX 75032. A similar demonstration is planned at his Texarkana Congressional office on Friday June 22nd. Krantz says the thought of children being separated from their mothers and just being sent some place alone with no one to care for them was haunting her. She said she started the petition because “We just want to hold our elected officials accountable. We just want to know that our representatives will do the right thing, that they have a moral compass. This isn’t what America is all about, we are better than this.”
Due to public outcry and bi partisan outrage, the issue of family separation at our borders has been brought to the forefront. A poll released today showed that 2/3rds of Americans were against the policy of family separation at our borders and Krantz hopes her petition to her Congressman will let him know where so many of his constituents stand on the issue.
