Wildcats Team Tennis Lose to Forney 10-9

After what he described as a miserable Tuesday, Wildcats Team Tennis Coach Tony Martinez found a lot more to enjoy Wednesday as the Wildcats returned to their battling ways against Forney at the Wildcat Tennis Complex. The result was a one point loss, 10-9 to Forney. The Wildcats had to forfeit one of their girls matches due to a shortage of players Wednesday.

The Wildcats top four boys players did all they could to win the match. Jonah Kirkpatrick, Chase Crouch, Aaron Lucas and Logan Schumacher all won their singles and doubles matches. Kirkpatrick teams up with Lucas and Crouch with Schumacher. Jeaux Leigh Cantu also won her girls singles match and teamed up with Carlos Lopez for a mixed doubles victory.

Coach Martinez said a scheduled match against Marshall set for 2 p.m. Thursday would now be considered an exhibition match. The Marshall coach told him he would be bringing five or six Mavericks’ players to Sulphur Springs. Coach Martinez said he probably would let some of his younger players get some court time.

Wildcat Football Update: Offense, B Backs

Coach Matt Young on Offense

Between now and the Wildcats’ football scrimmage on August 23, I’ll be talking with Wildcats’ football coaches about this year’s team. I asked Wildcats Offensive Coordinator Matt Young about the potential for this year’s Wildcats’ offense. He had just told an offensive lineman that the more improvement the player makes will move the offense closer to Coach Young’s offensive ceiling or its point of full potential. Coach Young said the offensive line is full of players who are experienced, big and committed. He said the Wildcats have an experienced quarterback with a great arm and good feet. Coach Young said nine of the Wildcats eleven wide receivers have played on Friday night. He said running back might end up as the position of strength for the offense this season. Coach Young said he has depth on offense and he added so many guys can do so many things. He is asking offensive players to improve one-percent in a facet of their game each day. Coach Young said if they can do that, the offense will end up being pretty good.

Coach Casey Jeter on Wildcats B Backs on Offense

Casey Jeter is in his second year as a coach for the Wildcats B backs on offense. The hybrid tight end and fullback mostly blocks on running plays but Coach Jeter says they can also be effective as pass catchers. He says he has one returning letterman, senior Jermond Bryant-Amos. The 6-foot-4, 215 pound Bryant-Amos is versatile enough to throw the shot put in track while also running the 400-meter race. Coach Jeter says Bryant-Amos played every game last year and really came on by the end of the season. He says Bryant-Amos has big hands. Coach Jeter says he also has Cameron Kaufert. Kaufert was the leading receiver on the JV team last year playing the B back position. Kaufert is also expected to play at defensive end for the Wildcats. He is 6-foot-2 and 195 pounds and also plays basketball. Coach Jeter expects Kaufert and Bryant-Amos to battle to see who starts. Coach Jeter says he also has two young players who are working hard to earn playing time. He says Landry Tyson, a wide receiver, may also line up in the B back position to give defenses something else to think about.

Scudder Endorsed by Texas Family Project; Event Set for Sunday

SULPHUR SPRINGS, TX   Games, snacks and brews await families at Backstory Brewing, on Sunday, August 19, from 2-4 pm, to celebrate The Texas Family Project’s endorsement of Kendall Scudder, Democratic nominee for Senate District 2.

Scudder was one of the first endorsements TFP made in the November 2018 election. Their endorsement reads, in part:

“Texas Family Project knows Kendall Scudder is the best candidate to support Texas public education. Kendall knows that we must ensure our schools and teachers are given the support and resources that they need to succeed. He will never, under any circumstance, support school vouchers, favors increased funding for schools and the Teacher Retirement System, opposes the A-F grading system, and believes we should increase access to high-speed internet. Kendall will oppose any efforts to cut school breakfasts or reinstate lunch shaming policies, as the incumbent has done.

Texas Family Project has confidence in Kendall’s support for the economic growth of Texas families. Too many rural communities in northeast Texas are struggling to keep the younger generation of leaders in their communities due to a lack of good paying jobs. Texas should seek out innovative ways to provide tax relief to local small business owners and embrace the clean energy industries of tomorrow.

Kendall Scudder believes Texas families deserve access to health care and Texas Family Project agrees. Texas has consistently been ranked one of the worst states in the country when it comes to health care access. We should be working with health care providers, insurance companies, and the federal government to ensure that every Texan has access to quality, affordable healthcare.”

“Thanks to the Texas Family Project for their endorsement!,” Scudder said. “They know I’m the best candidate to serve the families of NE Texas, fight for their rights in Austin, and support public education, economic development, and a healthy Texas for all of us.”

Dinner Bell ‘Belle’ Turns 80

Stand out the way, here comes Judy Gilreath.  Want to know where something is in the FUMC kitchen, Judy knows.  Want a tour of the fancy french slicing machine, Judy is ready.

Judy Gilreath

Dinner Bell is a community meal program ran from the FUMC in Sulphur Springs.  Each weekly meal is powered by volunteers from all walks of life and denominations.

Behind… in front and in between this group is Judy Gilreath. At 80 years old Judy has found a calling, serving others. Mrs. Gilreath says, “I don’t feel 80, but my meniscus does.”  She recently had some work done on that knee, and carefully timed it to coincide with a yearly Dinner Bell break.  Dinner Bell serves on Wednesday morning year around, except over the Christmas New Years break.

If your group would like to sponsor a Dinner Bell meal, call 903.885.2185

Judy also knows the names of most if not all the folks who come to dine.  She also keeps a running total of meals served as the line moves along. Congestion and mishaps are rare, and it’s usually a men’s group who is responsible.  Groups sign up each week to sponsor the meal, serve the food, and be recognized.  Frequently though, the meal sponsors wish to remain anonymous.

Five SSISD Schools Qualify for Free Meals for All Students; Other SSISD School Students May Qualify

The Sulphur Springs Independent School District, Child Nutrition Department is announcing a change to Its policy for serving meals to children served under the National School Lunch Program and School
Breakfast Program for DOUGLASS ECLC, BARBARA BUSH, BOWIE, LAMAR, AND TRAVIS for the school year 2018-2019. These schools qualify to operate the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) program and will provide breakfast and lunch to all children at no charge and eliminate the collection
of meal applications for free, reduced-price, and paid student meals. This new approach reduces burdens for both families and school administrators and helps ensure that students receive nutritious meals.

Students in Sulphur Springs Elementary School, Middle School, and High School may qualify for free or reduced meals according to a letter from the district to parents:

Dear Parent/Guardian:
Children need healthy meals to learn. Sulphur Springs ISD offers healthy meals every school day. Breakfast costs $1.00 for all Schools 4th-12th ; lunch costs $2.25 for 4th-5th, and $2.50 for 6th-12th. Your children may qualify for free meals or for reduced-price meals. Reduced-price is $0.30 for breakfast and $0.40 for lunch. If you received a notification letter that a child is directly certified for free or reduced-price meals, do not complete an application. Let the school know if any children in the household attending school are not listed in the letter. The questions and answers that follow and attached directions provide additional information on how to complete the application. Complete only one application for all the students in the household and return the completed application to Your child’s school or Child Nutrition Office, 631 Connally St. Sulphur Springs, TX 75482 . City Council Reviews 2018-2019 Budget; Passes on Tax Revenue Increase at This Time

No Sulphur Springs City Council public hearing is planned for a tax revenue increase based on property values following the vote of council Tuesday night in a special session. The council heard the proposed budget but will now face a budget with $32,000 in revenue cut due to their vote.

Three members of council were not present at the time of the vote Tuesday night. Council members Doug Moore, Erica Armstrong and Emily Glass were not present. Armstrong and Glass had been present for much of the review of budgeted items but were not present during the vote due to other obligations which took them away from the meeting. Council members Jimmy Lucas and Norman Sanders voted against placing the tax revenue increase on the September council agenda and no public hearing will be set as a result. Council members Freddy Taylor and John Sellers voted for the motion. A meeting set for next Tuesday night to appoint a City Charter Review Committee will allow for further discussion if the subject is place on the agenda.

During the meeting, the council discussed the 2018-2019 budget. The number of full time and part time employees in each department was noted as were specific expenses. City Manager Marc Maxwell noted that electrical rates for the city will be lower this next year following a negotiated rate change.
