Cross Country: Wildcats Win District; Lady Cats Place 3rd
The Wildcats and Lady Cats’ cross country teams had big days at the District 15-5A Cross Country Meet Monday morning (October 8) at Mount Pleasant High School. The Wildcats captured the district championship with a first place finish. The Lady Cats finished third in district.
Both teams advance to the Region II-5A Championship on Monday, October 22 at Lynn Creek Park in Grand Prairie.
Two Arrested for Sexual Assault
A sexual assault at a party in the county in March of this year led to the arrest of Elijah Naptali Meek, 27, and Catrina Dawn Sepmoree (no picture available), 28, both of Sulphur Springs.
Hopkins County Criminal Investigator Corley Weatherford, assisted by a deputy, arrested both on warrants at Trans Texas Movies in Sulphur Springs Saturday evening October 6, 2018 at 9:40 p.m.
Meek and Sepmoree are in Hopkins County Jail. Each is held on a $50,000 bond.
Five Inducted into Wildcat Hall of Honor 2018
Five were inducted into the Wildcat Hall of Honor Friday, October 5, 2018. Those introduced at Prim Stadium were, left to right: Presenter Tom Young and Inductee Mark Sevier, Class of 1992; Presenter John McCullough and Inductee Melissa McSheffery Knezevic, Class of 2004; Presenter Chuck King and Jacovy Paul Gordon and Lisa Gordon, son and sister of Inductee Jay Paul Gordon, Class of 1995 (Deceased); Inductee John Holloway, Class of 1991, and Presenter Michelle Alexander; Jackie Childress and Jacob Garza, daughter and great-grandson of Inductee Jack Sickles, Class of 1933 (Deceased), and Presenter Doug Evans, Hall of Honor Committee Chairman.
Four Arrested Early Sunday
No front license plate drew the attention of the Sulphur Springs Police Officer and he initiated a traffic stop in the 300 block of Bill Bradford Road Sunday around 1:30 a.m. As he made contact with the four individuals in the van, the strong odor of marijuana emitted from the vehicle. A search of the vehicle yielded a sizable amount of suspected Ecstasy also known as MDMA.
The four arrested and charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance Penalty Group 2, more than 4-grams but less than 400-grams, a Felony 2, are in Hopkins County jail. Each one is held on a $30,000 bond.

A document provided to KSST, filed with the court October 19, 2019, explains the charges for Clifford Mogaka Nyabera, 37, of Missouri City, TX were dropped. The reason given by the District Attorney: A co-defendant accepted full responsibility for the offence.
SSISD Announces Friday October 12, 2018 Early Release

Pecan Fundraiser to Benefit Local Senior Citizens Center
A fundraiser has begun which will benefit the Sulphur Springs Seniors Center Building Fund. According to Karon Weatherman, one-pound bags of freshly shelled pecans from Greentree Pecan Farm in Corsicana are being offered for $11 per bag, just in time for holiday baking. Profits from the sale of the pecans will go to the building fund. You can drop by the Seniors Center, place your order and pre-pay for the pecans now. The entire order will be delivered to the Sulphur Springs Seniors Center in early November 2018. Once the pecans arrive in Sulphur Springs, you can pick up your order. Susan Vaughn, a Meal a Day delivery volunteer, heads up the fundraiser committee.
East Texas Police Academy Graduates 12
East Texas Police Academy, hosted by Hopkins Count Sheriff’s Office graduated 12 students last week. Students began course work in March of 2018. Instructors for the course were Chief Investigator Corley Weatherford and Investigator Wade Sheets of the HCSO and Texas Ranger John Vance.
The 12 graduates along with Weatherford traveled to Austin for their state police officer certification test Monday, October 8th.
Graduates include: Chris Baumann, Johnathan Lee, Mike Cleveland, Dylan Scott, Andrew Cox, Steve Shing, Shaniece Hall, Alejandro Brena, Tabitha Vaught, Brad Overton, James Sawyer, and Kenneth Battaile.

John Chester Dutch Oven Contest 2018 Winners at Indian Summer Day
The John Chester Dutch Oven Cook-off was a part of Indian Summer Day held at Heritage Park in Sulphur Springs, Texas on Saturday October 6, 2018. A number of Dutch Oven cooking teams entered the competition, and the generous-size meals they prepared fed the hungry crowds at lunchtime. According to cook-off organizer Rick Wilson, here are the judge’s picks among the cooking teams:
