“May the Stew Be With You” at the 49th Annual Contest

Lezley Brown and Bradley Edge appeared on the KSST Good Morning Show to invite everyone to the World Champion Hopkins County Stew Cook-off set for Saturday October 27, 2018 in Buford Park. There are actually 172 different stew sites in the park. Of these, 167 Stew cooking teams will have the cooking fires going by daylight, and soon afterwards the park will be filled with amazing aromas coming from the various areas of the grounds. Stew must be ready before mid-morning, as judging takes place at about 10:30am and Stew will be served to the public at 10:45am. Cost to enter and eat is $6 person this year.
According to Lezley, you will find a ticket/service tent at each of the four entrances to the Stew grounds. At Stew serving time, lines may form, but go ahead and get in line, as they will move quickly. This year, the cost for Stew had a slight increase. It is now $6 per person, so feel free to bring correct change to speed things up. There will also be one tent location with credit card accessibility, and that same tent will have Stew T-shirts for sale as well. To save time on Stew day, you can purchase your tickets at the Chamber office or at any of the local banks through Friday.
Bradley, a long-time Chamber Ambassador is serving again as Chairman of the Stew Committee, which he describes as “an army”. Lezley, CEO of the Chamber, is designated “Leader of the Stew Troopers” with a nod to the Star Wars theme, “May the Stew Be With You”. Local artist Jessica Akers won the design contest this summer with her theme concept. The singing duo “Brown and Gray” will entertain with an acoustic set starting at noon on the main sound stage at the center of the grounds.
Three Sentenced to TDCJ Wednesday
October 25, 2018 – In Eighth Judicial District Court Wednesday, October 24th, three individuals were sentenced to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, according to Clay Harrison, Assistant District Attorney.

Kerry Renaldore Duffey, Jr., was sentenced to three concurrent sentences. Probation was revoked on Possession of a Controlled Substance Penalty Group 1 less than 1-gram and for Theft of Property. He will serve 18 months for each of those charges. He was sentenced to three years for a new case of Tamper Fabricate Evidence. Responding to a call at the Dollar Store on Main Street in March of this year, the Sulphur Springs Police Officer was told that a cell phone and charger had been taken from the store without purchase. Duffey, 25, of Sulphur Springs, was located in the 100 block of South Moore St. a few minutes later. He had in his possession the stolen articles. He was taken to Hopkins County Jail where, in the sally port, he admitted to having something in his sock. A paper containing a white crystal substance believed to be methamphetamine was found in the sock.

Grace Elizabeth Jones, 26, was sentenced to 2 years in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice when probations were revoked for Tamper/Fabricate Physical Evidence with Intent to Impair. A Cumby Police officer assisted by a Hopkins County Deputy made traffic stop near the 113-mile marker on I-30 in April of this year. The odor of marijuana emitting from the vehicle was quickly recognized by the Cumby officer. During a probable cause search, Jones was found to have a small amount of a green leafy substance believed to be marijuana on her tongue. The Cumby officer asked her to open her mouth. However, she swallowed the contraband. She did admit to having smoked marijuana four hours earlier. In her possession was a glass marijuana smoking pipe belonging to her.

Steven Deshaun Sneed, 32, was sentenced to 15 years in TDC for a Felony 2 Possession of Controlled Substance Penalty Group 1 more than 4-grams but less than 200-grams. Sneed has a criminal record that began in 2003. He was sentenced to TDCJ in 2007 as well.

Design Charrette Set for Pacific Park Thursday, October 25, 8 a.m. Until 5 p.m.

From 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. today (Thursday), a design charrette, a come and go planning event, at the Grays building in Pacific Park will give an opportunity to local residents to present their ideas for improvements and needs at Pacific Park to Mark Spencer, the design leader who planned Coleman Park and other improvements made in the city in recent years. Also present will be City Councilman Freddie Taylor, city parks staff, and City Manager Marc Maxwell. The public is invited to participate in the event.
Maxwell said this is the same type of event that was used in the design for downtown. He said the process can be a very helpful in meeting needs for the park. This is the first of three charrettes that will be focused on the use of outdoor and green space in the city.
No preconceived ideas are on the table according to Maxwell. He said that would defeat the purpose of the planning event. He said the city and planners want to hear from the people who use the park the most. He said designers want to hear how the park is used, how it should be used, the present needs as well as assets of the park.
Maxwell said Pacific Park is first for this event because that is where the greatest need is found. He said improvements and upgrades for the Grays building are perhaps the greatest needs for the park.
Wildcats and Lions Fight for Play-off Spot Friday Night
Will the Wildcats’ football team suffer a letdown against Greenville Friday night after a tough first district loss to Corsicana last Friday? Wildcats Football Coach Greg Owens said some people have suggested that. He said coaches have talked with the team about it. Coach Owens said they have also told the players not to get all wrapped up in the district records of the Lions and the Wildcats.

The Wildcats are 4-1 in district play and Greenville is 1-4. Coach Owens said both teams are fighting for playoff spots. He said the Wildcats need one more win to qualify for the playoffs while Greenville is fighting for their playoff life. Coach Owens said the Greenville-Sulphur Springs game has turned into a pretty good little grudge match the past couple of years with playoff spots on the line. He said he expects a hard fought match Friday night.
Concerning Greenville’s offense, Coach Owens said the Lions want to get the ball into the hands of their athletes. Senior Nick Mapps, a wide receiver, is one of those athletes, as is sophomore wide receiver Miles Denson. The Lions quarterback is veteran multi-year starter Caleb Jarvis. Coach Owens said Jarvis tweaked his knee earlier this season and is not as mobile as he has been in the past. He said Jarvis is accurate when he throws the football. Coach Owens said the Lions utilize two running backs: junior Kye Walker-Heard is a slasher while junior Lester Turner is bigger and is a pounder. He called the Lions offensive and defensive lines aggressive and tough. Coach Owens scouted Greenville when they played Kaufman.
Coach Owens is very impressed with Lions’ defensive end Jeremiah Abrego and he said the Wildcats must know where Abrego is at all times. He said Greenville Coach Darren Duke gets his team ready to play and he added the Lions play hard.
