Wildcats Host Kaufman in Senior Night Game at Prim Stadium
At his weekly media gathering Wednesday (October 31), Wildcats Football Coach Greg Owens said the Wildcats are still working to get better and striving to clean up some problem areas the team has. He said some of the problems arose in the Greenville game last week that Coach Owens said was a rough game. He pointed out that even some of his very successful teams in the past got well into the playoffs before ironing out some rough spots.
Kaufman is next for the Wildcats at Prim Stadium this Friday on Senior Night. It’s a battle for second place. Coach Owens said Kaufman is extremely impressive and explosive on offense. He believes they are the most explosive team in the district. Their offensive leaders are quarterback Trey Collier and twin brothers, running back Jay Gasper and wide receiver Cecil Gasper. All three are seniors. Coach Owens said the twins feed off of each other and play with a lot of emotion. He said the whole team rallies around that. Coach Owens said Collier is a poised quarterback who can run and pass. He noted that Kaufman won a 7 on 7 tournament in Tyler this past summer. Coach Owens said the Kaufman offensive line is really impressive. He said their offensive line may be the most technically sound in the district. He said they know their assignments and execute them really well. Coach Owens said most of the team has played together for a long time. They have 22 seniors on their 40 man roster. He said they made a deep playoff run last year and they expect to win.
On defense, Coach Owens said the Lions’ have a good defensive front. They are led by seniors defensive ends Jalen Fields and Montana Booker. Coach Owens said Booker has a great motor. He said junior middle linebacker Billy Pullen is also a good player. Five of the Kaufman skill guys on offense also play on the defense. Coach Owens said their secondary really flies to the football. He said the whole team plays hard. Coach Owens said the Wildcats will be either a second or third seed in the playoffs and he hopes that doesn’t mean they will be complacent come Friday.
Kaufman comes into the Friday game after a loss last Friday (October 26) to Royse City. Coach Owens said Royse City is a good team, especially on defense. His keys to winning the Kaufman game include tackling well, getting into a rhythm on offense and taking care of the football. Coach
Owens said Kaufman Head Football Coach Jeramy Burleson was a Wildcats assistant coach who was leaving when Coach Owens arrived in Sulphur Springs in 2006. He said Burleson is the son in-law of East Texas coaching legend Dickey Meeks.
