Weekly Food Pantry for Como Residents: Jehovah Jireh Provides For Many
Open since Autumn 2018, the Jehovah Jireh Food Pantry is providing basic food items and fresh fruits and vegetables each week to low-income individuals and families in need. The non-profit Food Pantry is located on Highway 11 East in Como, Texas. Over 350 individuals weekly come to the food distribution which is open each Thursday from 9am until 12 noon.
Nancy Attaway was moved to open the pantry in 2018. The idea sprang from needs which she was aware of even before she had a building. During a KSST Good Morning Show interview, Nancy explained “in an answer to prayers, almost miraculously, the perfect-size building in the perfect location, right on Highway 11, became available. We had to make very few changes and adjustments before we could begin storing food and getting ready to open”. Through donations of staples, breads, meats, fruits and vegetables, the Pantry is able to help individuals and families who are having a tough time making ends meet, and may be sacrificing nutrition to cut corners. “Actually, 1 in 6 persons in the US are facing hunger, and the local need is great. It is truly amazing how, and when, these donations of food come in. I may get a call during the day or even late in the evening saying they’ve got a pallet or two of something in another part of NE Texas, and me and my husband take the trailer and go after it. It seems that what we need always seems to come in, in time to bless someone”.
Maria Gomez has been a volunteer since the beginning. She helps in all areas, from storing foods in the cooler or freezer, to packaging them for distribution, to helping place the pre-packaged boxes in the cars of recipients, and in getting the word out about the Pantry. She says, “I work there a lot because I like to. But Nancy is there full-time, often 7 days a week. Because it is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, no one gets paid. All work is volunteer and gladly given from the heart”. She says that in order to receive food on distribution day, you will need to provide proof of income and number of persons in your household.
Since last Autumn, the Jehovah Jireh Food Pantry’s weekly distribution of food has grown to over 350 individuals per week. It is now associated with a group of caring individuals which provides quantities of food items to 8 different food pantries in the Northeast Texas region. As Springtime comes on, they want local gardeners to know that they will welcome donations of home-grown fresh vegetables. If you’d like to donate time as a volunteer, that’s welcome too. Donations of money for the Pantry are also always welcomed. If you’d like to make a donation, you can do so on Thursday mornings at the Pantry, or by mail to Jehovah Jireh Food Pantry at 10870 State Highway 11 E , Como, Texas 75431. You can also donate to the Pantry through an account set up at City National Bank. You may phone for more details at 903-335-4703. More information can be found on facebook at Jehovah Jireh Food Pantry
