Sulphur Springs FFA Shows at Ft. Worth Stock Show
Report from SSHS FFA Advisor John Holland
Jan 25, 2020
It has been a busy few days for the SSHS FFA Chapter who took their projects to the Ft Worth Stock Show. We had 3 students, Wayne Hinton, Tripp Smith, and Matti Smith, showing 5 Holstein heifers last week at the Ft Worth Dairy show. All did very well in some of the biggest classes in the breed! In addition, all 3 of the kids caught a calf at the Ft Worth Calf Scramble! That is a major honor, and each received a $500.00 certificate to go toward purchase of another dairy heifer to show next year. In addition, we had 3 Ag Mech students, Austin Crouse, Haydan Keller, and Oliver Yanez, who exhibited a deer blind that they built.

Now, starting January 25, we have 7 students showing 7 Beef heifers over the next 3 days. John-Robert Mason is showing his shorthorn Saturday at 8am. Jace Mayers and Maurie Flecker are showing their Beefmasters at 1pm. Savannah Allen will be showing her Hereford tonight around 5 or 6pm. In addition Alex Flecker will hopefully get picked to Scramble on Saturday at the Ft Worth Stock Show. On Monday January 27, Coen Bell will show his Simmental Heifer, and Cash Vititow and Blaine Allen will be showing their Brahman Heifers. Some of these students will appear on the KSST Good Morning Show on Thursday January 30 at 8:15am to share some of their experiences. Tune in on KSST 1230AM, listen to live stream on ksstradio.com, or watch on Cable Channel 18 TV.
During the first week of February, Coen Bell will be returning to Ft Worth with his steer. Also during that week we will have a group of Ag Mechanics students traveling to San Angelo for another project show. It is a busy month for all Ag teachers across the state as we kick off the Spring Stock Shows and judging season! And locally, please don’t forget that our Hopkins County Junior Market Show and NETLA Sale will be Thursday February 27th through Feb 29th in the Civic Center arena. Till next time, see yall on the road!
Scrap Metal Collected At 3 Precinct Barns Will Benefit Volunteer Fire Departments
Local residents who want to help raise funds for the county’s volunteer fire departments can do so while tidying up a bit at home, according to Hopkins County commissioners.

Precinct 2, 3 and 4 Commissioners accept at their respective precinct barns scrap metal; all funds raised from cashing in the scrap metal will be divided evenly among the volunteer fire departments in the county, the commissioners reported this week.
Precinct 4 Commissioner Joe Price said a total of $9,604 was raised over the last year from cashing in scrap metal.
“It’s free money that we’ve got that wasn’t part of our tax money,” Price said.
Two clean up days are designated each year, generally in April and October, to allow county residents to removed large unwanted items from their homes, things other than regular household trash, and deposit them in the designated receptacles furnished at their precinct barns.
However, the three commissioners said scrap metal will continue to be accepted during regular operating hours each week at the county precinct locations. Scrap metal can include smaller broken household appliances without Freon or hazardous chemicals, old lawn mowers and similar items.
Precinct 2 and 3 barns will be open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday-Friday, and Precinct 4 from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. to accept metal items only.
Community donations scrap metal donations won’t be accepted at Precinct 1 barn, but residents may take scrap metal to the other precinct barns to benefit the volunteer fire departments. Barker said the commissioners no longer accept household trash at their precinct barns. In an effort to maximize the workers he has for Precinct 1, scrap metal donations will not be accepted in Precinct 1. However, Precinct 1 will contribute to the cause.
“Here’s what I’m committed to doing: I will give you all the metal I pick up out of the ditches. I will send all the metal your way,” said Precinct 1 Commissioner Mickey Barker.

Denton Man Arrested In Hopkins County On Controlled Substance Charge
January 25, 2020 – A 59-year-old Denton man was jailed Friday night after THC wax and marijuana were found in his car, according to arrest reports.

Hopkins County Sheriff’s Deputy Jason Lavender reported stopping an eastbound blue Toyota Camry at 11:38 p.m. He alleged the 2019 car traveled past him on Interstate 30 in the left lane at the 120 mile marker and continue driving in the left lane without passing other vehicles. Thus, the deputy stopped him for the traffic infraction.
The car, which reportedly displayed an Oregon license plate, stopped near the 122 mile marker. While talking with the man, Lavender reportedl driver Steven Charles Doron of Denton refused his request to search the car, so the deputy retrieved his canine partner, Chiv, from the patrol vehicle. The police dog allegedly gave a positive alert on the driver’s side of the 2019 car while conducting a free air sniff around it.
During a probable cause search, marijuana was located in the driver’s seat, and multiple canisters containing marijuana and three squares containers with concentrated THC in wax form were found in a white paper bag on the rear passenger’s seat floorboard, Lavender alleged in arrest reports. Consequently, Doron was arrested at 11:49 p.m. Jan. 24, and jailed for possession of 1 gram or more but less than 4 grams of a Penalty Group 2 controlled substance; the car was impounded.
Doron remained in Hopkins County jail Saturday morning, Jan. 25, on the third-degree felony charge.
