Stew Fest Begins Set Up
The Sulphur Springs Stew Fest begins preparations with the arrival of the carnival on the SSHS campus. The carnival is due to open on October 22, with today being the last day to purchase wristbands at a discount price. To purchase a wristband for unlimited rides at the Carnival will cost $25 as opposed to the $20 at Super Handy stores and local banks. The Lone Star Heritage Quilt Guild’s Fifteenth Annual Quilt Show is coming up this Friday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. at The ROC of First Baptist Church. Over 100 quilts will be on display. There will also be special exhibits and vendors. Theme of the show is “Ties That Bind”. Cost to enter is $5. Thursday Sept. 11th is Patriot Day, not to be confused with Patriot’s Day in April. Though not a national holiday, Patriot Day is a flag-flying day of observance of 9/11/2001. In Sulphur Springs, flags on the downtown square will be lowered at 7am tomorrow (Thursday) by the Hopkins County Marine Corps League. League members will also lay a wreath on the square in memory of 9-11 victims. All Americans are encouraged to fly Old Glory at their homes on Thursday.

The three-day Dare to Dream Camp got underway Wednesday at Douglas Intermediate School in Sulphur Springs. 120 fifth graders to be at Douglas registered to attend the leadership building camp. Around 100 high school students are serving as mentors. Jeff Harris, the school district Character Curriculum Director, developed the program. It utilizes the movie Remember the Titans.
