At high noon Monday, Hopkins County officials will break ground for the new $16-million 192-bed County Jail. The groundbreaking will take place north of the current jail. Some 12 to 15 months of construction will follow. County Judge Robert Newsom says the project appears to be below budget. The Hopkins County Commissioners Court will continue with work sessions this week on the budget for next fiscal year. The court is expected to meet Monday through Thursday on the budget. Hopkins County Inmate Population Update
The total Hopkins County inmate population was at 102 early Wednesday morning. A whopping total of 25 inmates were being housed at county expense in Franklin County. Sheriff Butch Adams told County Judge Robert Newsom the large number was necessary due to an inmate knocking out a window in the Hopkins County Jail a few days ago. The Hopkins County Commissioners Court Monday finalized their contract with Sedalco of Fort Worth to be the Construction Manager-At-Risk for the new County Jail project.
