Police Chase Ends in a Pit Stop for Ohio Woman
March 30, 2023 – What should have been a normal traffic stop by a Sulphur Springs Police Officer ended with an officer performing a “pit manuever” to stop the fleeing vehicle after a 40-mile pursuit. It all started at 9:49 a.m. Thursday March 30, 2023 as an SSPD officer attemped to make a traffic stop using sirens and flashing lights at the 125 mile marker on I-30 but the vehicle would not stop. As the vehicle continued Eastbound and down I-30 through Franklin and eventually Titus Counties, any nearby law enforcement joined in the chase. With law enforcement from at least seven different agencies, a DPS officer chose to end the chase by performing a pit manuever which disabled the vehicle at the 164 mile marker.

The suspect still not wanting to give up brandished a weapon and refused to exit the vehicle. After some negotiating, the Cleveland Ohio woman exited the vehicle and was promptly placed under arrest. Joanne Haynes was transported back to Hopkins County and remains in the Hopkins County jail awaiting bond to be set on the charges of Evading Arrest and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm.
The following agencies were involved in the pursuit:
- Texas Department of Public Safety
- Sulphur Springs Police Department
- Hopkins County Sheriffs Office
- Saltillo ISD Police Department
- Franklin County Sheriffs Office
- Mount Vernon Police Department
- Mount Pleasant Police Department

Lady Cats soccer plays Kilgore Friday in Regional Quarterfinal

Coach Adriana Brena and her squad picked up a huge win in their second round playoff game, using a two-goal second half to beat Palestine 2-0 in Tyler on Tuesday, Mar. 28.
Getting that win Tuesday allows Sulphur Springs to move on to the third round, where they are set to take on Kilgore in Mount Pleasant.
It is the first time since 2016 that Lady Cats soccer advances to the Regional Quarterfinals.
Sulphur Springs raced past the opposing Lady Cats in the second to secure an Area championship.
Palestine exhibits great speed, quickness, and talent, but they simply ran out of gas playing a Lady Cats team that is talented from top to bottom.
A clean sheet at the break, both schools looked to the second half for a way to break through the 0-0 tie to take the lead and an Area championship.
Sulphur Springs would be the team to dominate en route to a 2-0 win in the second round playoff game.
Coach Brena’s squad got the first and last laugh Tuesday, Mar. 28 in Tyler as Rowan Faircloth scored the first goal of the game.
An assurance goal from Faircloth just 70 seconds later firmly put Sulphur Springs ahead for good as they went on to win in Tyler.
The sophomore with the brace scored her 22nd and 23rd goals in the Area playoff victory.
Coach Adriana Brena’s team played the long-game Tuesday in their 2-0 win over Palestine.
The Lady Cats had some turnovers and passes intercepted in the first half, somewhat uncharacteristic of Sulphur Springs over the course of the season. Palestine, with great speed and quickness, as well as being incredibly well-coached, played a tough and competitive game all 90 minutes of playoff action.
But when the second half rolled around, and the stamina began to run low for the opposing Lady Cats, Sulphur Springs completely shifted momentum.
Coach Brena’s squad scored twice in 70 seconds to take their huge 2-0 lead over Palestine.
Tuesday’s win secures an Area championship for Lady Cats soccer. It is the first time since the 2015-16 season under former head coach Jesus DeLeon that Lady Cats soccer moves on to the third round.
The second round playoff win brings their season record to 19-5 (8-0 district).
Next up, Sulphur Springs plays Kilgore in the Regional Quarterfinal.
The third round playoff game is in Mount Pleasant at Sam Parker Field on Friday, Mar. 31.
The Regional Quarterfinal contest kicks off Friday at 6 P.M.
Friday’s third round duel with Kilgore will be broadcasted onto KSST 1230 AM.

Baseball drops second straight, hosts Liberty-Eylau on Friday

Editor’s Note: Baseball hosts L.E. Friday
Tuesday brought a gut-punch of a loss at Wildcat Park.
Sulphur Springs led early only to crumble down the stretch en route to a 4-3 loss to Pittsburg.
Wildcats baseball had a chance to at least tie the game, if not win in walk-off fashion, had they not struck out in their final at-bat.
Alex Macias, with the bases loaded and two outs struck out swinging on his final two pitches in a four-count at-bat to watch as Pittsburg rallied from down two runs to get a big win over the Wildcats.
Sulphur Springs jumped out to a 2-0 lead after their first at-bat.
Two errors, a fielder’s choice and two singles, the second of which coming from Matt Mitchell, allowed SS Macias and Grayson Hardy to score in the first inning.
From there though Pittsburg flipped the script, scoring a run each in the fifth and sixth innings prior to an even bigger seventh, getting two more runs en route to a 4-2 lead over Sulphur Springs.
Coach Jerrod Hammock’s squad had an excellent chance to at least send the game to extra innings.
In their final at-bat, a lead-off double, coupled with two singles allowed the Wildcats to get back in it trailing 4-3.

A sacrifice bunt put an out on the board, and a quick groundout made it two, still trailing by one. A walk off Evan Moore loaded the bases, but still down to their final out.
The strikeout of Macias sealed the come-from-behind win for Pittsburg, 4-3.
Mitchell’s two RBI single were huge for Sulphur Springs, allowing them to pick up their early lead in the first inning. He went 2 for 3, crossing home himself as well Tuesday.
Kaden Mitchell picked up his second loss starting for the Wildcats, his first since the opener just over two weeks ago. He pitched all seven innings, allowing all four runs and walking five.
Mitchell struck out seven in the 4-3 loss to Pittsburg.
The loss on Tuesday drops Wildcats baseball’s season record to 5-8 (1-4 district). The home loss to the Pirates is the second straight and sixth in seven games for Sulphur Springs.
More crucially though, the Wildcats’ defeat at the hands of Pittsburg drops them into fifth place.
Next up, Coach Hammock and his squad begin round two of district play Friday, Mar. 31 when they host Liberty Eylau (4-1, 2nd)
That game tees off on Friday at Wildcat Park at 7 P.M.
