Hopkins County 4-H’ers Host Virginia 4-H Families
Just in time for the 2015 Dairy Festival, 4-H families will be visiting Hopkins County. Twenty-eight youth from Smyth County, Virginia will spend four nights in host homes and enjoy many of the sites, smells, and sounds of Hopkins County!
Our visitor will be taking part in Festival activities and even have a trip to AT&T Stadium planned. Be sure to extend a proper Texas Welcome if you happen to meet of our esteemed visitors.
Hopkins County 4-H members grades 6 and up will have the opportunity to travel to Virginia during the summer of 2016 if funds can be raised. Each participant will be responsible for assisting with fund raisers and making a commitment to represent Hopkins County as an ambassador.
Two summers in a row, a 4-H group from Wisconsin visited Hopkins County and we were able to send a group of 12 (8 4-H members and 4 adults) to visit Wisconsin during the summer of 2014 to complete the exchange. They visited 17 states on their trip and brought back many pictures, souvenirs, and memories.
The 4-H program is the nation’s largest youth organization, and Hopkins County Extension staff members are proud to have the opportunity to work with today’s youth in order to make them strong, contributing members of society! The 4-H pledge sums it up nicely:
I pledge my Head to clearer thinking,
My Heart to greater loyalty,
My Hands to larger service,
And my Health to better living,
For my club, my community, my country, and my world.

Hunt County Brothers Arrested; Clears Burglaries in Hopkins County
Two Hunt County brothers, who are in Collin County jail for burglary of a habitation, will clear up to seven
burglaries being investigated by Hopkins County Sheriff’s Criminal Investigators according to Chief Criminal Investigator Lewis Tatum. Stanton Wayne Yates, 31, (left) and Perry Jeff Yates, 30, (right) were arrested June 3rd in Collin County. Perry Yates is being held on a $15,000 bond for burglary. His brother Stanton is being held on a $50,000 bond and a $10,000 bond for felon in possession of a fire arm.
Three different groups have been arrested for Hopkins County burglaries but a number of home burglaries had not been cleared according to Tatum. Tatum said the break in those burgalries not cleared came with the Collin County arrest. The fire arm in the vehicle of the Yates brothers at the time of the arrest was a pistol that had been stolen in Hopkins County. Tatum said a number of items reported stolen in Hopkins County burgalries are showing up in area pawn shops and are tied to the Yates brothers.
The pair were arrested by Collin County law enforcement while they were in the act of burglarizing a home. Since firearms were involved in the Collin County burglary, the case has been turned over to “the feds”, accoridng to Tatum.

Balloons Beautiful, but Grounded Due to Wind
Winds aloft prevent safe flying this morning, but that did not diminish the display.

Murder Suspect Proves Elusive
Sulphur Springs Police officers continue their investigation of the early Monday morning shooting death of Jonathan Trahern Young, 26, of Sulphur Springs. SSPD CID Sgt. David Gilmore said they continue to seek the suspect, Tilton Mapps of Greenville.
The search for Mapps has proven him elusive since the search for him began shortly after the incident. Law enforcement thinks he has connections not only in Greenville but in other areas of Hunt County as well as Dallas County. Texas Ranger John Vance, the U. S. Marshall’s office, and the Criminal Investigation Division of the Texas Department of Public Safety are assisting in the search for Mapps. Gilmore called these organizations very helpful noting they do this type of work every day.
“We really need to get this subject in custody,” Gilmore said. Gilmore said that everyone at the crime scene have given statements concerning the event. However, the family members and associates of Mapps are not law abiding citizens and are assisting Mapps in eluding law officers, according to Gilmore. Gilmore said, “We’ll get him.”
The public is asked to assist in locating Mapps, who is considered armed and dangerous. Gilmore says Mapps is a black male, 5′ 10″ tall, 135 pounds, black hair and some facial hair like a mustache and goatee. Gilmore said few people in Sulphur Springs know Mapps, which also limits his apprehension.
