Flynn Defends Purchase of Raw Milk by Consumers

Dan Flynn
Representative Dan Flynn (R-Van), Chairman House Pensions, sent a letter to the Attorney General’s Office this week expressing deep concerns about Department of State Health Services conduct in the agencies attempt to overstep its bounds. Recently, in both Austin and Houston, local health departments seemingly acting pursuant to direction from DSHS officials, intervened in the delivery of raw milk to customers who had already legally purchased the product. Both times, the health departments brought along the police, even though the customers were buying a legal food product. Raw milk is only allowed to be sold on the farm, and the customers had hired an independent agent to act as their courier and deliver their food for health, safety and reasons of convenience.
A Life Invested in Students and Family: John Mason “Jack” Chubb
Memorial Services for John “Jack” Mason Chubb of Sulphur Springs will be held Saturday, July 9, 2016 at 10:00 A.M. at First Baptist Church with Rev. Ron Byrd officiating and Rev. Fred Lewis assisting. There will be no visitation. His time as principal at Sulphur Springs High School contributed much to students, teachers, and the community as a whole. His quiet and unassuming manner hid the investment of his life in people and the community. A number of students at SSHS during his tenure later became teachers and community leaders. A student who later became a coach-teacher at SSHS, Kyna Massey Saul, now a teacher in the Waco area, wrote at the time of his death, “My high school principal passed away last night. When I heard the news that he was ill, I began to talk about him to our kids. I told (her daughter) that the best way to sum up John Mason Chubb was “how many people can say that they knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that their HS principal loved them and believed in them and that they loved them In return?” That was Mr. Chubb. I was one of thousands of students he led so well who could probably say the same thing.”
Jack passed away Tuesday, June 28, 2016 at his home in Sulphur Springs. He was born on November 3, 1932 in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania the son of Charles B. and Ruth (Mason) Chubb. He married Martha A. “Sue” Kassl in Chicago, Illinois on February 6, 1954. Jack served in the US Navy, serving in the Korean War. He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church and he worked in the education department for many years, retiring as principal of Sulphur Springs High School.
He is survived by his wife; son, Jack Chubb, Jr. and wife Denyse, of Wesley Chapel, FL; daughters, Patti Williamson and husband Rick, of Bartlett, and Diana Beverly and Betty Gooch both of Sulphur Springs; grandchildren, Matthew, Bryan and Tiffany Chubb; Heath, Bubba and Marissa Mikulec; Brittney and Brandon Williamson; Taysha Martin; Toyah and Tyanna Beverly; and Chance Gooch; great-grandchildren, Mason and Mattie Mikulec; Mariah Mikulec; Layton Anderson; Dawson and Milada Martin; Liani Chubb; and brother, Charles Chubb Jr. of Tennessee.
He is preceded in death by two brothers, Bill and David Chubb.

Tira News By Jan Vaughn
A good group gathered for the Tira Homecoming on Sunday. Danna (Evans) Lewis did a great job emceeing the program. Also, she and her sister, Dusti (Evans) James, each sang a beautiful, inspirational song. Several members of the congregation shared stories of memories in Tira. Floyd and Martha Payton were honored for their many years of dedicated service to the Tira Cemetery Association and the community. Martha presented a rose to the family members of those buried in the Tira Cemetery during the past year. During the business section of the program, the group voted to clear a section of the land donated by the Lynn Chapman family and expand the cemetery, in an effort to have burial space for future generations. Following the program, folks gathered at the picnic tables for a covered-dish lunch. Although the temperature was high, there was a nice breeze, which made the event more comfortable. On behalf of the Tira Cemetery Association, I would like to express our appreciation to everyone who donated to the perpetual care fund, for the upkeep of the cemetery, and also to Floyd Lawson for keeping the grounds looking so beautiful. Thanks also to Ben Jennings for placing flags on the graves of our veterans.
William and Joyce Dodd had a nice visit with William’s half-sister, Paula Dodd, and her youngest daughter, Samantha, from Fresno, California, on Thursday afternoon. The last time they had seen her was 40 years ago, when she was only 10 years old. They enjoyed recalling past memories. On Saturday, June 25th, they had a surprise visit from one of William’s cousins, Gala Hurley Oakes and husband Randy, from Sweeney, Texas. They enjoyed catching up on old times.
Yvonne Weir returned from South Dakota on July 1st. She said it was cool and relaxing there. Mike and Dacy (Weir) Campbell and their kids, Elise and Eli, also visited while she was there. Everyone enjoyed the ranch, the Black Hills, and Mount Rushmore. Dustin and Natalie Weir have returned from a wonderful trip to Turkey and Italy. Due to Natalie’s schedule, Dustin is spending a few days with his folks, following surgery on his leg.
I always need and appreciate input from my friends to help keep me informed of news in our community. If you have any news pertaining to Tira residents, past or present, please contact me, Jan Vaughn, at 903-945-2190 or 903-438-6688 or [email protected]

How To Avoid Mosquito Bites!
In many measures, mosquitoes are one of the most dangerous insects in the world. Mosquitoes also transmit a host of other diseases, including West Nile virus, yellow fever, and dengue fever. There’s many reasons to take every possible measure to avoid mosquito bites even without taking into account their terrible, stinging itchiness.

There is many ways to help prevent mosquito bites, but lets just include the most popular.
One of the most popular ways to keep the annoying mosquitoes off is to use insect repellent. Apply insect repellent to uncovered skin surfaces when outdoors, especially during the day. When using sunscreen, apply it before insect repellent. One of the best ways to keep mosquitoes from biting you is to simply cover your skin. Wear your sleeves and pant legs as long as possible to cover as much skin as possible. Also keep your clothing as loose as possible. This serves two purposes: first, it’s much more comfortable in the hot, humid weather where mosquitoes thrive. Second, mosquitoes can sometimes bite through clothing that’s held tight against the skin, especially if the fabric is thin. Clothing may also be sprayed with repellent.
Don’t waste money on an electric hanging bug “zapper.” These have been shown to kill many bugs very effectively, but generally the bugs killed are the non-harmful ones. Plus, the noise they generate tends to be obnoxious. Mosquitoes can be more effectively killed by one of the dedicated machines that use heat and carbon dioxide to attract the mosquitoes and then entrap or kill them using nets, containers or chemicals. Also avoiding parts of the world where mosquitoes are common. Unfortunately, mosquitoes live everywhere except Antarctica. However, they’re generally more common in warmer, wetter areas, which tend to be close to the equator. If you really want to avoid mosquito bites, stay out of tropical climates entirely. Mosquitoes are especially common in jungles and swamps in Central and South America.
Avoiding standing water is also a good idea. Mosquitoes are often attracted to water, especially standing water, so lakes, creeks and swamps are mosquito favorite places, especially during hot months. Most species of mosquitoes lay their eggs in stagnant water and some have even adapted to lay their eggs in salt water. Stay away from any bodies of stagnant water, whether they’re small puddles or vast swamps, to reduce your risk of encountering mosquitoes. Also when sitting outside you can also put a fan on you, the reason why is that fans typically generate wings over 1 mph. And mosquitoes can’t fly in that fast of wind.
Please take the tips to consideration on how to keep these blood suckers away!
