Yantis FBC begins a new Easter tradition, and you’re invited!
If you’ve ever attended a drive-thru Nativity at Christmastime, well, now there is a drive-thru Easter portrayal. The idea was brought to Yantis First Baptist Church Pastor Craig Vance by a church member. In mapping out ideas for the depiction, it was decided that about ten different scenes would be needed to tell the life of Jesus from birth to ministry to death. So, Pastor Vance recruited the youth and adults of the church and reached out to Yantis business people and community leaders to fill the roles. The drive-thru setting will open at 7pm Saturday April 8 in downtown Yantis for the public. As your car reaches each scene, there will be a printed board describing the scene and time of Jesus life. You may see people you know as actors, and there will be some live animals as well. Pastor Vance feels that this will be just one more way that families can use in teaching and in worship for their families. The first car will enter at 7pm, and the actors will stay in the scenes until the last visitor has come and gone. The church and the downtown area of Yantis are on Highway 154, south of Sulphur Springs. The presentation is absolutely free.

Scam Alert Issued by Local Law Enforcement
Be aware when using ATM and gas pumps at local convenience stores as well as elsewhere. A Scam Alert has been issued by Sulphur Springs Police Chief Jay Sanders.
Sanders says Sulphur Springs Police and County Deputies are examining ATM machines and gas pumps across the city and county. A number of skimmers have been placed on local machines. Sanders said that when using the machines, before placing your credit card into the machine, shake the scanner to be sure it is intact and a skimmer has not been put in place.
He also said that some scam artists are taking the front off gas pumps and placing the skimmer inside the machine.
A number of skimmers have been located Thursday by local law enforcement and the public is asked to beware when using credit cards at ATM machines and gas pumps.

Flags Fly At Half-Staff April 6th
Flags across Texas and the United States are flying at half-staff April 6th. A proclamation by the President of the United States and Governor Greg Abbott requests the action in respect for the memory of former U.S. Senator, NASA astronaut and Navy aviator John Glenn.Miller Grove News April 6, 2017
Is it just me or is the year already starting to fly by? March was just a flash and now we’re working our way through the month of April. Recent rains have made for green pastures and gardens in our corner of Hopkins County and I hope it continues well into the summer months that are approaching.
Our FFA students did very well at the annual stew and auction that was held on Apr. 1. Advisor Brandon McClure said that the FFA Chapter raised around $15,000 that night. As I approached the Ag shop that night I saw some veteran stew makers (Mac Garrett and Glen George) who were giving a little advice to the new breed of stew makers – Bret and Mark Garrett and Clint and Roy George. I was very pleased to learn the total earnings for the night and it should never surprise me at how generous our community members and parents truly are.
After receiving a host of awards and advancing from the district to bi-district UIL competition of One Act Play, Miller Grove HS theater students performed their version of “Chamber Music” by Arthur Kopit on Monday, Apr. 3, for the public. They competed for the UIL event on Saturday, Apr. 1. The play is set in the 1930s with actors posing as females who have been interned in an asylum and who believe that they are each a different prominent figure from history – such as Joan of Arc, Amelia Earhart, and Queen Isabella to name a few. Candace Earp received the Honorable Mention award at the cast’s performance at both the district and bi-district levels. Cassidy Seaney was the recipient of the All-Star Cast award at the bi-district level while Jessica Mullins won Honorable Mention at the bi-district contest and All-Star Cast at the district competition. Honorable Mention awards also went to Christeen Abbott and Aleigh Bessonett at district and All-Star cast for the district performance went to Koby Sharp and Kayleigh Lester. Great job students and keep up the good work!
It was nice to see that the old portable building that was housing the office and library while the new school addition was completed has been moved off the property as of this past Tuesday, Apr. 4. It’s good to see the parking lot in front of the Ag shop again! The building was moved their in late summer/early fall to keep functionality while the construction of the new building was taking place.
The 5th Grade students recently had their DARE graduation ceremony at the school. The class is 11 weeks in length and was taught by Deputy Kelly Wiser. The program has been taught to the students annually by a Hopkins County officer. The officer makes students aware of the danger of drugs and the peer pressures that go along with them. It is a very good program that addresses some serious issues at a time when students need to be aware of the reality of drugs and their effects.
Happy Birthday to Alan Rivers & Elaine (Weaver) Ragan on Apr. 11; Deanna Hasten on Apr. 12; Erma Harwell, Cherrie (George) Bessonett, & Grace Evelyn (Akins) Wilson on Apr. 13; Mary Kate Burns on Apr. 14; and Jeremy Black stead & Hayley Wren on Apr. 15.
Just a reminder about a few upcoming MG events: Miller Grove Cemetery’s Memorial Day service Saturday, May 6; FFA Banquet, Thursday, May 18; End of School Stew, Friday, May 19; Academic & Sports Banquet, Friday, May 19; Senior Hamburger Supper at County Line Baptist Church, Wednesday, May 24; Kindergarten Graduation, Thursday, May 25; Junior High Graduation, Thursday, May 25; and High School Graduation, Friday, May 28.
