A & M-Commerce Hosts Adventures in Math for High School Students

COMMERCE, TX— The Texas A&M University-Commerce Math Department is readying itself for its 2017 Adventures in Math event, which will be coming up Friday, Feb. 17. The AIM event allows high school teachers and students to take part in competitions to win prizes, listen to keynote speakers, visit the university’s Planetarium, go to the library for a 3D printer presentation, take campus tours, and eat a delicious lunch in the university cafeteria.

The Adventures in Math event has previously been a finalist of the 2015 Tech Titans of the Future-University Award, an award founded back in 2001 for universities in North Texas. It was also a finalist of the 2016 edition of the same award for the Middle School Girls category.

With the wide variety of programs offered at Texas A&M-Commerce, the Adventures in Math event not only gives math-inclined students the chance to improve their math skills, but also to get a look at life on a college campus as the possible destination for their future studies.

Sulphur Springs Native Will Challenge Bob Hall for Texas Senate District 2 Seat

Sulphur Springs Native Will Challenge Bob Hall for Texas Senate District 2 Seat

Dallas, Texas – February 16, 2017 – In the middle of a raucous legislative session, Kendall Scudder, the Manager of Community Services for a Dallas nonprofit affordable housing organization, announced his intentions to challenge Bob Hall in 2018 to represent Texas Senate District 2.

Scudder, a Democrat from Sulphur Springs, believes the Texas legislature hasn’t focused on vital issues important to you, and most Texans.

“Every session, folks like Bob Hall come back from Austin bragging about all of the money they cut from our budget. Meanwhile, our schools are significantly underfunded, children are being abused under state custody, our infrastructure is crumbling, and our taxes keep going up every year.” Scudder asks, “For years, Republicans like Bob Hall have allowed your local taxes to go up while reducing funds to help our children. Why would anyone send a man like Bob Hall back to the legislature?”

Scudder continued, “We deserve better than the failed priorities of the Texas Legislature; it’s time to fight for the honest, responsible, and accountable government that northeast Texas deserves.”

As a product of Texas public schools in Greenville and Sulphur Springs, Scudder states that his number one priority will be to restore funds for Texas teachers to educate today’s students and our future workforce.

“Bob Hall should be ashamed to have his name attached to the type of financial dismantlement that is proposed in the 2017 Senate budget,” Kendall said. “This legislation guts $150 million, or 36% of all funding, for pre-school education programs. Your children deserve better.”

Election Day for midterm elections falls on November 6th, 2018. To learn more about Scudder’s positions on vital issues such as inadequate funding for veterans affairs and our crumbling infrastructure, as well as resources for families visit www.ScudderForSenate.com. Farm Bureau’s Food Connection With Dinner Bell

FARM BUREAU VOLUNTEERS HELP SERVE DINNER BELL LUNCH

The Dinner Bell Food Ministry celebrated the 5th anniversary of service to the community on Wednesday February 15 at First United Methodist Church dining hall in downtown Sulphur Springs. Officers and members of Hopkins/Rains County Farm Bureau teamed up as Community Partners to help serve the meal and to celebrate the Dinner Bell milestone. Their teamwork is especially fitting because Farm Bureau’s “Food Connection Week” is observed February 13-17 with appreciation for the abundant food supply that Americans enjoy due to farmers, ranchers and the agriculture industry.

Food Connection Week marks the time in the new year that most Americans have already earned enough income to pay for their year’s supply of food.  This week, Hopkins/Rains County Farm Bureau reached out to the community with “Food Connection Trivia” on the KSST Morning Show, with gift cards from Brookshire’s as prizes for winners. Farm Bureau will continue to showcase local agriculture during next week’s Hopkins County Junior Market Livestock Show where FFA and 4H youth will show livestock projects prior to the Sale of Champions on Saturday February 25 to earn college scholarship money. Farm Bureau reminds everyone that agriculture is the nation’s largest employer, with more than 21 million people involved in some phase of agriculture.

Failure to Pay Child Support Plagues Moses

Sarah Danyilyn Moses, 30, of Tyler is back in Hopkins County Jail. This time she is incarcerated for Violation of Probation/Motion to Revoke Child Support.  She was arrested at the Wood County Courthouse by Wood County Sheriff’s Deputies and transported to Hopkins County.

Moses was one of two arrested last week in a traffic stop in front of Hopkins County Courthouse. Investigator Wade Sheets initiated the traffic stop and soon called for additional backup as he observed classic signs of criminal activity in the actions of the two occupants in vehicle. Sheets and others observed contraband in plain sight in the vehicle. A search of vehicle produced an amount of marijuana, digital scales, and 65-grams of methamphetamine in a safe in the trunk of the vehicle. At that time the pair was placed in Hopkins County jail before being released on bond.

Her current bond is $5,000.
