Picture Story: NETLA Show Underway; Sale of Champions Saturday
NETLA, Northeast Texas Livestock Association, is 15 years old this year (2017) and the NETA Show highlights the accomplishments and industry of Hopkins County youth in 4-H and FFA. Swine, goats, lambs, steers, and poultry will be exhibited by the participants. All are seeking the opportunity to make the Sale of Champions, which can provide money for college or another animal to show or some other pursuit of the student show-person.
The late Larry Spradlin, FFA teacher and former Hopkins County Extension Agent was a driving force behind the show. His legacy and the support of many in the community make this a successful endeavor for youth.
This year there are 88 exhibitors and 126 projects in the Swine Division; 55 exhibitors and 57 projects in the Goats Division; 30 exhibitors and 43 projects in the Lambs Division; 25 exhibitors and 28 animals in the Steer Division, and 64 exhibitors and 64 projects in the Poultry Division

Wildcats Track Has Great Start to Season
Wildcats Track Coach Matt Young said his team had a great start to the season at a meet in Denison Thursday evening. He said he was proud of the way the Wildcats competed.
Coach Young said Ian Blanch had a personal record of 44-feet-8 inches in the shotput. D’Idric Dugan also placed in the top six in the shot. In the discus, Josh Thompson threw 123 feet, Gideon Gregory went 110 feet and D.J. Hoppe had 105 feet as all three placed.
Landry Tyson was second in the high jump at 5-foot ten-inches, he won the 300 meter hurdles in 43.7 seconds and ran a low 17 second time in the 110 meter hurdles.
Tyson Goodson was second in the triple jump at 42-feet-5 inches and set a personal record of 5-feet 8 inches in the high jump.
Landon Thornton won the 3200-meter run and he placed in the 1600 meter run. Peyton Vickery won the 1600 meter run and was third in the 3200-meter run. Eduardo Ramirez was fourth in the 3200-meter run. Eli Sellers ran a 2-min-10 second 800-meter race into a strong wind. Sellers also placed in the 1600-meter run.
Terrell Turman ran a low 16 second time in the 110-meter hurdles. Lawrence Worth ran 11.6 seconds in the 100 meter dash. Coach Young said the 4X400 meter relay team of Landry Tyson, Lawrence Worth, Tiesan Goodson and Terrell Turman finished off a good night. C
oach Young said he was excited with how the team started the season. Next up is the Sulphur Springs Meet next Friday. Teams joining the Wildcats include Denison, Sherman, Paris, Mt. Pleasant and North Forney. Field events start at 4 p.m. with running events beginning at around 6:45p.m. A JV meet will be held next Thursday at the SSHS Track Complex.
Wildcats Lose Third Game to Waxahachie
The Wildcats’ baseball team lost it’s third game of the season in the Rose City Classic in Tyler Friday. The Wildcats lost to Waxahachie, 11-4 at Tyler Lee Field. The Indians scored two runs in the second and three more in the third to take a 5-0 lead after three. The Wildcats fought back to within 5-3 after five inning. Waxahachie scored a single run in the six and five more in the seventh while the Wildcats tacked on a single run in the seventh. Kamren Harrison took the pitching loss. The defeat made the Wildcats 0-3 for the season. They’ll played Nacogdoches Friday and will play Whitehouse at 5 p.m. Saturday at Mike Carter Field in Tyler.
On Thursday the Wildcats dropped their season opener to Forney, 6-5 and then lost to Lindale 8-3.
Lady Cats Fall to Rowlett
Rowlett scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a walk off 7-6 win over the Lady Cats’ softball team in an Allen tournament Friday. After both teams scored four times in a wild first inning, the Lady Cats took a 6-4 lead with two runs in the second inning. The lead held until Rowlett’s late winning rally. The Lady Cats outhit Rowlett, 8-5. For the Lady Cats, Hannah Crowson had 3 hits and Alyssa Abron had 2 hits. Alli Fite and Sadie Stroud both had 2 rbi’s.
The Lady Cats swept two games on the first day of a Allen tournament Thursday. The Lady Cats downed Frisco Liberty, 3-1 and later topped McKinney North, 9-4.
In the win over Frisco Liberty, the Lady Cats outhit Frisco Liberty, 7-5. The Lady Cats scored one run in the third inning and two more in the fourth. Frisco Liberty scored 1 in the fifth inning. Alli Fite got the pitching win and she struck out 7. Abron had 2 hits.
In their late game Thursday, the Lady Cats downed McKinney North, 9-4. Bailey Haggerty got the pitching win and she struck out 4. The Lady Cats outhit McKinney North, 10-6. Jaye Doughtie, Crowson and Stroud had 2 hits apiece. Abron drew 3 walks and Brinklee Drive had 2. Driver and Kelsey Wallace had 2 rbi’s. The Lady Cats play Dallas W.T. White at 3 p.m. Friday. They will play Sherman Saturday morning at 11 a.m. The Friday loss dropped the Lady Cats season record to 6-2.
Friday Game Day: Wildcats at Area; Softball, Baseball in Tourneys; Soccer District Contests; Tennis in Tyler
Among teams playing on this very busy game day are the Wildcats’ basketball team, the Lady Cats softball team, the Wildcats’ baseball team, the Wildcats and Lady Cats’ soccer teams and the Wildcats’ tennis team.
The Wildcats’ basketball team will take on Carrollton Creekview in an area contest Friday night at 7 p.m. at Rockwall. The Wildcats defeated North Forney in bi-district while Carrollton Creekview surprised Frisco Lone Star in bi-district. The winner Friday will face the winner of a Little Elm and West Mesquite game. We will bring you Wildcats Basketball live on KSST Radio from Rockwall at 7 p.m. We will also videotape the game for replay on Channel 18 on Suddenlink Cable at a later date.
The Lady Cats’ softball team played Rowlett (story coming) at 11 a.m. and they will face Dallas W.T. White at 3 p.m. In an Allen tournament Friday.
The Wildcats’ baseball team played Waxahachie (story coming) at 11 a.m. and they will face Nacogdoches at 3 p.m. in the Rose Classic in Tyler Friday.
The Lady Cats’ soccer team is playing host to Marshall at the SSHS Track Complex Friday night. There will be a JV contest at 5:30 p.m. and a varsity game at around 7:15 p.m.

The Wildcats’ tennis team also in action this game day Friday. They are at a John Tyler tournament in Tyler. It got under at 8 a.m.
Saltillo Lions Defeat Dodd City ; Face Slidell in Regional Quarterfinal
The Saltillo Lions are area champions after a thrilling 55-51 win over Dodd City Thursday night. The Lions had to stage a big rally in the last two quarters. Dodd City led 15-11 after one quarter and 29-20 at halftime. The Lions reduced the deficit to six, 41-35 after three quarters. The Lions outscored Dodd City, 20-10 in the fourth quarter to get the win.
Ryan Prewitt led the Lions in scoring with 18 points and Trevor Moore had 16 points. Mathew Gurley had 10 points, Michael Simmons 6 points, Walker McGill 3 points and Dakota Patridge 2 points.
The Lions will meet Slidell in a regional quarterfinal game with details to be determined.
Hopkins County Residents Charged with Injury to Child
Kimberly Lynn Finch, 36, and Douglas Wayne Gaffney, 51, who live on County Road 3502 in Hopkins County were arrested by the Special Crimes Unit on warrants for two charges each for Injury Child with Intend. The couple is charged with injury to a child exposing them to drugs being used in the home. The couple was at Child Protective Services offices at the time of the arrest.
The pair is in Hopkins County Jail with bond set at $25,000 bond on each count.
The 3502 County Road area is also the area where Garland Shane Robinson and Cory Butler, both of Garland, were arrested in August of this year. The pair plead guilty in Eighth Judicial District Court this week to possession of Methamphetamine possession and other charges.
PJC Partnership Inspires Innovation Nationwide
This summer’s Paris Junior College partnership with Country Music Television’s Empowering Education program was featured at a workshop held during the recent American Association of Community College’s Workforce Development Institute (WDI).
The WDI is a pre-eminent opportunity for in-depth exchanges and networking for economic and workforce leaders at community colleges and their partners. This year’s theme was “Inspiring Innovation,” to demonstrate how innovation abounds on campuses and in communities across the country.

PJC President Dr. Pam Anglin presented at the workshop, “Innovative Student Engagement.” Her fellow presenters were Chuck Brodsky, Executive Vice President, Business Development, Full Measure Education; Lucia Folk, Vice President, Public Affairs, Country Music Television; and Mark Schneider, Vice President and Institute Fellow, American Institutes for Research.
They discussed unique examples of innovative engagement models that have been used at community colleges throughout 2016, including the free CMTEE/PJC concert headlined by Morgan Myles and featuring Hannah Kirby held in July.
In conjunction with the concert, a Resource Fair was held showcasing PJC’s many workforce technology programs, as well as admissions and financial aid resources.
“Participating in the Workforce Development Institute provided an opportunity to learn about successful workforce development programs at community colleges across the nation and to interact with corporate leaders who partner with community colleges,” said Dr. Anglin.
Failure to Wear Seat Belt Leads to Drug Arrest
A traffic stop for not wearing a seat belt on State Highway 11E at CR 2421 resulted in the arrest of Summer Michelle Rowe, 29, of Como. Rowe said she was asleep and that is why the seat belt was not secured. Nervous responses led to a consent to search the vehicle.
During the search a syringe was found. At that time Rowe was arrested. A the jail, the jail staff located a pink plastic baggie with crystal substance believed to be methamphetamine as well as a clear plastic baggie that contained green leafy substance believed to be marijuana.
Rowe is in Hopkins County Jail being held on a $10,000 bond.
