Iwuakor District Defensive MVP; Wildcats Named to Basketball All-District Team

Wildcats Basketball Coach Clark Cipoletta unveiled eight Wildcats’ players who were named to the All-District Basketball Team on KSST Radio and Channel 18 TV’s Saturday Morning Coaches Show.

6-foot-7 inch sophomore post Victor Iwuakor was unanimously chosen as the district’s Defensive MVP.

Two Wildcats’ players made First Team All-District: senior Ke’Ontae Dunn and sophomore Keaston Willis.

Three Wildcats were selected to the All-District Second Team: freshman Michael Jefferson, who missed out on Newcomer of the Year by one vote, junior Bryson Lynn and senior Dane Rutherford.

Earning Honorable Mention were sophomore Xavier Cork and junior Dedric Godbolt.

Lady Cats Softball Wins Four of Five in Allen Tourney

The Lady Cats’ softball team won four out of five games for a second straight tournament as they wrapped up play in an Allen tournament with a 7-0 win over Sherman Saturday. The Lady Cats also won four out of five in their Sulphur Springs Varsity Softball Tournament last week.

Bailey Haggerty pitched a six-inning shutout against Sherman allowing only 3 hits and striking out 5. The game was scoreless until the top of the third inning when the Lady Cats scored 2 runs. They added 3 in the third and 1 in the fourth and fifth innings. The Lady Cats made no errors. Hannah Crowson had 4 hits and Alyssa Abron and Jaye Doughtie had 2 hits apiece. Kate Potts, Kristen Allen and Crowson all had RBI’s.

The Lady Cats improved their season record to 8-2. They will travel to McKinney for a 6 p.m. game on Tuesday.

Wildcats Baseball vs. Whitehouse Declared Double Forfeit After Brawl

The Wildcats’ baseball team’s final game in the Rose City Classic against Whitehouse Saturday evening was declared a double forfeit after the two teams were involved in a brawl. The incident occurred in the top of the seventh inning with the Wildcats leading 3-2 with the tying run on base with two outs. The Wildcats led 3-0 going into the top of the seventh but Whitehouse scored two runs on a single, two hit batsmen and a two-RBI single.

Then the Wildcats turned a double play. Then a Whitehouse player reportedly threw a punch at Wildcats shortstop Ryan Humphries. A brawl erupted. When order was restored, umpires declared the game a double forfeit. The crazy top of the seventh detracted from a fine pitching effort by the Wildcats Triston McCormick who threw six innings of shutout baseball allowing only five hits. The Wildcats had five hits.

The Wildcats scratched out a run in the first inning aided by a Whitehouse error. The Wildcats scored two more runs in the fifth inning. Kaden Argenbright had an RBI single that scored Mason Buck who singled and then stole second base. A second run scored on another Whitehouse error. With the double forfeit, the Wildcats ended the Rose City Classic with 1 win and 3 losses. The Wildcats season record is 1-3. The Wildcats will play in a Lindale tournament this Thursday through Saturday.

Ramirez Returned to Jail on Parole Violation

Oscar David Ramirez, 34, of Sulphur Springs, was arrested at his residence for violation of probation Sexual Assault and placed in Hopkins County jail. His bond was denied. Reasons for the violation of parole are unknown at this time.

On Thursday, July 23, 2015, in the Eighth Judicial District Courtroom of the Hopkins County Courthouse, Oscar David Ramirez was placed on 10 years deferred probation . Ramirez was arrested and booked into Hopkins County jail on September 4, 2014 charged with sexual assault after an 18-year old Sulphur Springs woman accused him of drugging her before the July 13, 2014 assault at a bar restaurant.

The woman told Sulphur Springs police at that time that Ramirez served her alcohol. The next thing she remembers is waking up with Ramirez having sex with her. She told him to stop and later was able to run for help. Lt. Stillwagoner’s investigation indicates there may be other victims.

When Evading Arrest Don’t Stop for a Beer

While on patrol, a Sulphur Springs Police officer noted a man running across the street. He was running from the manager of a convenience store located on League Street. The store manager was stating he had just been robbed.

The officer exited his vehicle and gave chase. The man evaded officers called to the scene but was soon found sitting near the railroad track drinking a Coors Beer that he had taken from the store. What was at first described to officers as an armed robbery turned out to be shoplifting. However, a records check on the man showed a prior conviction for evading arrest. That bumped everything up to a State Jail Felony.

Christopher Leon Huddleston, 37, of Sulphur Springs was arrested in the 200 block of League Street and charged with Evading Arrest Detention with Previous Conviction. He is in Hopkins County Jail being held on a $10,000 bond.

Sulphur Springs Pair Arrested for Injury to Child with Intent


Sulphur Springs Police arrested Amanda Kay Johnson, 27, and Ronald Donald Tucker, 27, for Injury to a Child with Intent. Once again, drug use in their residence on South Broadway had an adverse affect on the children in the home, according to a member of the Special Crimes Unit.

Both Johnson and Tucker are in Hopkins County Jail charged with two counts each for Injury to a Child with Intent and are being held on bonds totaling $50,000 each.

Wildcat Basketball Season Ends In Area Overtime

The Wildcats’ basketball team saw their season end in an area game loss to Carrollton Creekview, 67-64 in overtime at Rockwall Friday night. The Mustangs outscored the Wildcats, 10-7 in overtime.

The Mustangs hit 8 of 10 free throws and made one basket. Victor Iwuakor scored 5 of his game high 22 points in overtime for the Wildcats. A long three point attempt to tie the game at the buzzer by Keaston Willis did not fall.

The Wildcats built a lead in each of the first three quarters going from up 1 in the first quarter and then by 3 at halftime and by 6 after three quarters before the game was tied up, 57-57 after regulation. Willis and senior Ke”ontae Dunn scored 11 points apiece for the Wildcats. Michael Jefferson scored 10 points. Augustine Ene had 21 points for Carrollton Creekview.

The Wildcats end the season with a 26-7 record. The Wildcats will lose two seniors off the roster: Dunn and Dane Rutherford.

Lady Cats Softball Friday Tourney Results

The Lady Cats’ softball team earned a split of two games in an Allen tournament Friday with an afternoon thumping of Dallas W.T. White, 13-4. Earlier Friday, the Lady Cats lost to Rowlett, 7-6. Against W.T. White, the Lady Cats hammered out 18 hits and scored 3 runs in the first inning, 4 more in the second, 1 in the third and 5 more in the fourth. Bailey Haggerty threw shutout ball for 4 innings striking out 4. Alyssa Abron and Macee Hollins led the hit parade with 3 hits apiece. Sadie Stroud drive home 3 runs and Alli Fite and Hollins had 2 RBI’s. With the wins over Frisco Liberty and McKinney North Thursday, the Lady Cats now have won 3 and lost 1 I the Allen tournament. They will play Sherman Saturday morning starting at 11 a.m. The Lady Cats now have a 7-2 season record.

Wildcats Shutout Nacogdoches in Tyler Tourney

The Wildcats’ baseball team broke into the win column with a 9-0 shutout of Nacogdoches Friday afternoon in the Rose City Classic at Mike Carter Field in Tyler. Nacogdoches got only 4 hits. The Wildcats pounded out 15 hits.

The Wildcats scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning. They added a single run in the fourth and five more in the sixth. Easton Silman was 3 for 3 with a walk and he had 1 RBI. Mason Buck, Kaden Argenbright, Dawson Draper and Triston McCormick all had 2 hits. Ryan Humphries had a double and drove in 3 runs. McCormick also hit a double.

The win gave the Wildcats a split of two games Friday in the tournament. Earlier the Wildcats lost to Waxahachie, 11-4. The Wildcats lost their first two games in the tournament Thursday, 6-5 to Forney and 8-3 to Lindale.

The Wildcats are 1-3 for the season. They will play Whitehouse at Mike Carter Field Saturday at 5 p.m. in the Rose City Classic.

Wildcats Soccer Loses Close Game in Marshall

The Wildcats’ soccer team had their second close loss of the season to Marshall Friday night at Marshall. The Mavericks scored goals in the first half and second half to defeat the Wildcats 2-1. The Wildcats managed a second half goal.

In their first meeting in Sulphur Springs on January 31, the two teams tied 2-2 in regulation. Both teams scored one goal in overtime making it 3-3. Marshall won the shootout, 6-5.

The Wildcats now have 2 wins, 2 shootout losses and 4 outright losses. The Wildcats are now 9-5-3 for the season. They will play Texas High Tuesday at the SSHS Track Complex. The Wildcats won at Texas High back on February 3.
