SSHS All-Sport Banquet Monday Night; Broadcast on KSST
When big sports events occur for Wildcats and Lady Cats’ team, expect to see KSST and Channel 18’s Doug Haston behind a video camera on a tripod. The 2017-2018 Wildcat All-Sports Banquet takes place Monday (May 7) beginning at 6 p.m. in the High School Cafeteria. KSST Radio will broadcast the banquet live. Haston will be videotaping all the awards for replay at a later date on Channel 18 on Suddenlink Cable.
The Monday event marks the sixth straight day for Haston to document an event. It started last Wednesday night (May 2) as the Wildcats’ baseball team played at Wylie East. Thursday night and Friday night May 3-4) featured the Lady Cats versus Little Elm at McKinney North. Saturday (May 5) the Wildcats’ baseball team needed two games at McKinney Boyd to defeat Wylie East. With no sports Sunday (May 6), Haston shot video of a Choral Society Concert. Then there’s the Athletic Banquet Monday night. Things look pretty good for a Tuesday night off for Haston but you never know. We may think of something.

Panthers Face Union Grove in Area; Schedule Announced
After defeating Detroit, 2 games to 1, in a bi-district playoff series last week, the North Hopkins Panthers now face Union Grove in Area round action. Saturday night Panthers Coach Tim Henderson announced a three-game Area series with Union Grove.
All games will be played at Mesquite’s all-turf Tillery Field. Game one will take place Friday (May 11) at 1 p.m. Game two will be played 30 minutes after the conclusion of gamer one. Game three is necessary is scheduled for Saturday (May 12) at 1 p.m.
In their bi-district series with Detroit, North Hopkins won game one at home 7 -0 on Wednesday. They lost 6-5 in game two on Saturday at Lufkin Hudson before wrapping up the series with a big 16-0 win.

Wildcat UIL Literary Criticism Team Wins Championship at State
The Wildcats UIL Academic Literary Criticism Team won the state championship at the UIL Academic State Meet this past weekend (May 4-5) in Austin. The team is made up of Carissa Carter, Lainey Whittle, Celeste Leeds-Laliberte and Natalie Cruz. In individual competition in Literary Criticism, Carter placed second, Whittle was fourth and Leeds-Laliberte was fifth.
In other team and individual results, the Wildcat Spelling and Vocabulary Team finished second in the state. Team members include Chase Charlton, Sarah Harper, Natalie Cruz and Gisselle Garcia. In Ready Writing, Annmarie Gunn was second in state.
In the Barbara Jordan Essay Contest, Breana Wooten was fifth and Rachel Bramlette was sixth.
In the Latino History Essay Contest, Bramlett was second and Gunn was sixth.
Wildcats UIL Academic Coordinator Gerald Grafton was unavailable for an interview Monday but issued a statements saying that eleven Sulphur Springs High School students competed at the UIL Academic State Meet this past weekend at the University of Texas in Austin. He said all eleven brought home at least one medal for their efforts. Grafton said 17 medals were earned in all. He said he was extremely proud of the way the students represented Sulphur Springs High School.

Winnsboro Police Department Report April 30-May 6, 2018
There were three arrests, 164 calls for service, 38 citations issued, and 40 warnings written during the Winnsboro Police report period April 30-May 6, 2018. No accidents were investigated.
Miguel Martinez, 19, of Garland, was arrested April 30th for Possession of Marijuana.
Ricky Dickens, 47, of Yantis, was arrested May 4th for Possession of a Controlled Substance.
Jamie Branch, 49, of Winnsboro, was arrested May 6th for Driving While Intoxicated 3rd Offense.

Seniors Center Director Plans May, June Activities
Senior Citizens always have lots to do in Sulphur Springs, but the months of May and June are special. You can get all the details at the Sr’s Center, 150 MLK Drive, which is also the home base of Meal a Day. Here are two of the exciting events planned in the community!
The first event is a “Party in the Park” on Tuesday May 8 from 5pm until 6:30pm under the Pavilion in Buford Park. Dale “The C” Cummings will provide entertainment with 50’s Rock n Roll. Be prepared to dance and enjoy the music of the era! Best costumes will win prizes, and a “dance-off” is planned to round out the fun. Hot dogs and coke floats will be served by members of the Hopkins County Marketers Association.

The “Ms. Hopkins County Senior Classic Pageant” is planned on Saturday June 9 at 6pm at the Hopkins County Civic Center. The pageant is free for ladies age 60 and older to enter, and there is still room for more contestants. This is the 9th annual pageant, and winners are eligible to advance to the Ms. Texas Senior Classic Pageant during Summer 2018.

County, State Party Primary Runoff Election Early Voting Begins May 14
Voting in the Primary Runoff elections in Hopkins County and the State of Texas is May 22. Early voting beings Monday, May 14th and continues through May 18th at the Justice of the Peace Precinct 2 Courtroom, 128 Jefferson Street, 8-5 p.m. each day.
May 11th is the last day to receive an application for a ballot to be voted by mail.
On Election Day, voting places have been consolidated. Voting on Election Day is Tuesday, May 22nd will be at the Precinct 1, Lutheran Church, 1000 Texas Street; Precinct 2A, Morning Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, 2018 Fuller Street; Precinct 3, Courthouse, 118 Church Street; Precinct 4A, League Street Church of Christ, 1100 South League Street; and Precinct 13, Como-Pickton CISD, 13017 Texas Highway 11E, Como.
In Hopkins County, Republican voters will decide the nomination and election of Hopkins County Treasurer. Two candidates are on the Republican ballot: Andrea Griggs and Danny Davis. There is no Democratic challenger for the post in the November General Election. Precinct 2 Commissioner is also on the ballot—Gregg Anglin and Ed Moore. Again, there is no Democratic General Election Challenger.
Democrats will cast a run-off ballot for state nominees only.
An election officer may give voting order priority to individuals with a mobility problem that substantially impairs the person’s ability to move around. A person assisting an individual with a mobility problem may also, at the individual’s request, be given voting order priority. Disabilities and conditions that may qualify the voter for voting order priority include paralysis, lung disease, the use of portable oxygen, cardiac deficiency, severe limitation in the ability to walk due to arthritic, neurological, or orthopedic condition, wheelchair confinement, arthritis, foot disorder, the inability to walk 200 feet without stopping to rest, or use of a brace, cane, crutch, or other assistive device. Voters, who wish to be given voting order priority, and be accepted for voting before others in line to vote at that polling place, may indicate this to any election officer serving at the polling place. The presiding election judge will determine whether the voter and the voter’s assistant, if applicable, will be brought forward to the front of the line.

City Election Results to Be Confirmed Thursday
More voters turned out during early voting than on election day for the City of Sulphur Springs election that put three new individuals in Place 1, 2, and 3 of the Sulphur Springs City Council for the next three years. Elected were Place 1 , Erica Armstrong ; Place 2, Jimmy Lucas; and Place 3, Norman Sanders. Andy Lowen received 29 votes and Justin Davidson 42 votes even though both had withdrawn from the race. The results will be canvased at a special city council meeting Thursday evening.
Sixteen registered voters in the city had requested the Secretary of State provide observers to insure the integrity of the election.
