Cipoletta’s Doubts Tuesday Answered With District Championship
Even Wildcats Basketball Coach Clark Cipoletta admitted having doubt for a little while that the Wildcats could come back against Texas High on the road Tuesday night (February 5). After all, the Wildcats trailed Texas High, 33-22 at halftime. Coach Cipoletta said his Wildcats were not playing well.
Meanwhile Texas High was playing out of their minds. They were also making a lot of shots and were making it tough on the Wildcats to score. He urged the Wildcats to stick with it, to keep playing solid defense and to keep attacking. It worked as the Wildcats rallied in the second half and won the game, 69-60. Coach Cipoletta said that’s the story of this year’s team. They never give up and they find a way to get things done.

In the key fourth quarter, the Wildcats outscored the Tigers, 26-12 and most of the Wildcats’ points came from 6-foot-9 senior post Xavier Cork. Coach Cipoletta said the Wildcats funneled the ball into Cork eight or ten straight times and he scored every time. The Wildcats also got good scoring games from 6-foot-5 Sadaidriene Day Day Hall and 6-foot-6 Cameron Kahn.
The win secured the district championship for the Wildcats, their second crown in two years. The Wildcats, ranked #4 in Class 5, are 8-0 in district play and 22-8 for the season. They play a district game at Royse City Friday night.
Carrillo Happy With Lady Cats Hustle in Tuesday Scrimmage; Host Home Scrimmage Friday
Lady Cats Softball Coach David Carrillo said his Lady Cats played their most complete scrimmage of the season Tuesday night (February 5) in a 6-1 win at Wylie East. Pitcher Bailey Haggerty gave up only 1 run and 3 hits. The Lady Cats pounded out 10 hits. But the veteran softball coach saw something else Tuesday that made him even happier.
Coach Carrillo said the Lady Cats were hustling all over the field. He said he noticed it on the bases and when Lady Cats were going after balls on defense. A case in point he said was a hit to the outfield by Abbi Baier. Coach Carrillo said she ran hard and made a triple out of it. He said he hopes the hustle carries on into a Friday scrimmage and then into the start of the regular season next week. Coach Carrillo said that’s what he expects from Lady Cats softball.
He said he likes the pitching depth he has on this year’s team and the way batters getting hits pick up teammates who may have a hitless night.
The Lady Cats have a home scrimmage scheduled Friday night at Lady Cat Park against North Lamar, weather permitting.

Lady Cats Face Jacksonville at Winona in Bi-District Monday, February 11
The bi-district basketball game between the Lady Cats and Jacksonville has been firmed up. It will be at the Winona High School Gym Monday night (February 11) at 7 p.m. The Lady Cats are their district’s #3 seed. The Lady Cats ended district play with a 6-4 record and their season mark is 24-7. The Jacksonville Lady Indians finished in second place in their district with a 12-2 record. They are 28-6 for the season.
Lady Cats Coach Brittney Tisdell said the Lady Cats got to within one point of Texas High in the third quarter of the Lady Cats’ last district game of the season on Tuesday night in Texarkana (February 5). Coach Tisdell said at that point the Lady Tigers went on a 15-0 run that put the game out of reach. The Lady Tigers hit a basket just before the end of the third quarter and then scored the first 13 points of the fourth quarter. The Lady Cats whittled the 16 point lead down to 9 points at the end. Coach Tisdell said the Lady Cats missed several short shots in the fourth quarter. They shot 41% for the game.
Seniors Sadavia Porter and Autumn Tanton had huge games for the Lady Cats. Porter scored 32 points and Tanton 18. They had 50 of the Lady Cats 58 points. Coach Tisdell said Porter also made 10 out of 14 free throws as the Lady Cats shot 70% from the free throw line. She said her team played hard but got tired late in the game.
