Local Man Attempts to Flee DPS on County Road

Fleeing a DPS Trooper on County Road 4724 at speeds between 60 and 70 miles per hour, Jose Alejandro Gomez-Murillo, 19, of Sulphur Springs failed to negotiate a 90-degree left turn and struck a fence. The vehicle came to rest in a ravine in a pasture. When taken into custody,Gomez-Murillo was smoking a marijuana cigarette. Later two clear plastic baggies containing suspected marijuana were found in the ravine where the vehicle, Chevrolet 1500 Pickup, had stopped.
With all the windows in an upright position, the trooper surmised the marijuana was intentionally placed away from the vehicle driven by Gomez-Murillo.
Murillo is in Hopkins County Jail charged with Evading Arrest/Detention with a Vehicle, Tamper/Fabricate Physical Evidence, and Possession of Marijuana less than 2 oz. He is held on a total of $41,000 inbonds. He was in Hopkins County Jail in October of this year for possession and for Fraud Use/Possession of Identifying Information less than 5 items.
SCU Arrests Three for Possession; One Wanted in Rains County
December 18, 2018 – Three people were arrested Monday afternoon after Sulphur Springs Special Crimes Unit received information regarding the location of Nathan Josiah Gaby, 33, of Sulphur Springs. Gaby was wanted on a felony warrant.
Officers observed a white passenger vehicle matching the description of Gaby’s personal vehicle at a residence in the 800 block of College Street. As the homeowner, Michaelea Dianne Moss, 32, was leaving the location, she told officers that Gaby was inside the house. Detectives and officers made contact with Gaby and he was taken into custody. With consent to search his bedroom, investigators found suspected methamphetamine, marijuana,and a large amount of drug paraphernalia. Also in the residence was Randy Lynn Webb, 34, of Sulphur Springs. All three individuals were arrested.

Gaby was arrested for Possession of a Controlled Substance Penalty Group 1, less than 1-gram, a state jail felony. He is held on a $15,000 bond. He is also held on a Probation Violation for Rains County.

Moss was arrested for Possession of a Controlled Substance Penalty Group 1, less than 1-gram, a state jail felony. She is held on a $15,000 bond.

Webb was arrested for Possession of a Controlled Substance Penalty Group 1, less than 1-gram, a state jail felony. He is in Hopkins County Jail held on a $5,000 bond.

Cumby Traffic Stop Leads to Arrest of Sulphur Springs Man

Cumby Police arrested Michael Anthony Williams, 50, of Sulphur Springs for Possession of a Controlled Substance, Penalty Group 1 less than 1-grams, Possession of a Dangerous Drug, and Driving While License Invalid.
Williams was driving a vehicle with a defective license plate light when he passed the stationary Cumby officer on the West Bound Service Road of I-30 at the 499 overpass. When it was found his license invalid, the officer began the arrest procedure. A pat-down search revealed two white round pills identified as Trazadon and an inventory of the vehicle found a small clear baggie containing a white power substance believed to be Cocaine in the center console of the 2005 Chevy Trailblazer.
Williams is in Hopkins County.
Miller Grove, Saltillo Teams Honored for Cross Country Titles
Monday morning, December 17, 2018, Miller Grove Cross Country Teams and the Saltillo Lion Cross Country Team were honored for their accomplishments at state competition as Hopkins County Judge Robert Newsom read proclamations on the courthouse steps.

MILLER GROVE School Boys Cross Country Class 1A State Champions
WHEREAS, The 2018 Miller Grove Cross Country season began in May. The team goal was to get back on the podium at the State Cross Country Meet; and
WHEREAS, On the weekend of November 3, 2018 the state cross country events took place in Round Rock, Texas; and
WHEREAS, The Miller Grove school boys cross country track team placed 1st and won the class 1A cross country state title;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Robert Newsom, Hopkins County Judge, do hereby urge all citizens in Hopkins County to congratulate these young men for their outstanding victory in winning the Class 1A State Championship in the boys division of cross country for 2018.

MILLER GROVE School GIRLS 2ND PLACE CLASS 1A CROSS COUNTRY STATE COMPETITION

SALTILLO School Boys Cross Country Competition Third Place
WHEREAS, On the weekend of November 3, 2018 the state cross country events took place in Round Rock, Texas; and
WHEREAS, The Saltillo school boys cross country track team placed 3RD in the class 1A cross country state competition; and
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Robert Newsom,Hopkins County Judge, do hereby urge all citizens in Hopkins County to congratulate these young men for their exceptional third place finish in the Class 1A State competition in the boys team division of cross country for 2018.

Cipoletta Prepares Wildcats for District Race
Wildcats Basketball Coach Clark Cipoletta discussed the #8 ranked Class 5A Wildcats Friday evening loss at now #4 ranked Class 6A Jesuit of Dallas and a variety of other topics on KSST Radio and Cable Channel 18’s Saturday Morning (December 15) Coaches Show. Jesuit defeated the Wildcats, 86-68. Coach Cipoletta said the Rangers were good and added they were hard to guard.
The Wildcats had to play without 6-foot-9 post Xavier Cork, who has an injured toe. Coach Cipoletta said the Wildcats got off to a slow start. He said the Wildcats had early turnovers and did not play particularly hard. The Wildcats trailed by 30 points at halftime, 53-23. Coach Cipoletta said he was proud with the way the Wildcats regrouped at the half and with the way they battled during the second half. He said the Wildcats got to within 8 points in the fourth quarter. Coach Cipoletta said the urgency the Wildcats showed in the second half was needed at the beginning of the game. Commenting on the Wildcats very tough schedule this season, Coach Cipoletta said it is done to prepare the Wildcats for the playoffs and district play. He said he believes to be the best you have to beat the best.
Coach Cipoletta also talked about the district race. He said Mount Pleasant, Royse City and the Wildcats had good runs in the playoffs last year. Texas High seems much improved as are Greenville and Lindale, which has a 7-foot center.
The Wildcats season record is 10-6. Included are two victories over ranked Class 6A teams, Rockwall and new to the rankings this week, Killeen Ellison. Four of the Wildcats losses are to ranked Class 6A teams: Denton Guyer, Jesuit of Dallas, Wylie and Fort Bend Elkins. Their other two losses are to Class 6A teams Mansfield Summit and Lake Highlands. The Wildcats also have wins over several other Class 6A teams: Plano East, Rockwall Heath, Manfield Lake Ridge, North Mesquite and McKinney Boyd.
The scheduling trend continues this week. The Wildcats play at Class 6A Tyler Lee Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. Then they play #12 ranked Class 6A Houston Sam Houston in the University of Houston Christmas Crossover Friday at noon at a special events center in downtown Houston.

Lady Cats Improve Season Record to 13-3
Lady Cats Basketball Coach Brittney Tisdell called her team’s tight, 53-50 win over Princeton Friday evening (December 14) scary. He added she was glad the Lady Cats held on to win. The Lady Cats led 32-15 at the half but the Lady Panthers got to within 1 point late in the game.
Coach Tisdell said she had to sit point guard Sadavia Porter in the third quarter after she picked up her fourth foul. Coach Tisdell said none of the other Lady Cats guards wanted to bring the ball down court. She said later Danielle Godbolt and Te’Arria Rose joined Porter in foul trouble. Coach Tisdell said they were reluctant to risk picking up their fifth foul so Princeton was allowed to get some easy baskets. A Lady Panther also hit a pair of threes, including one banked in, to turn up the pressure on the Lady Cats.
In the fourth quarter, Autumn Tanton and Porter scored big points for the Lady Cats. Tanton had 2 baskets and a free throw and Porter added a basket and 4 out of 5 free throws. Tanton ended up with 26 points and Porter scored 20. Coach Tisdell said this was the Lady Cats best free throw game of the season. They hit 12 of 16 for 75%. Coach Tisdell said the Lady Cats have been working hard to improve from the line. She said she has even resorted to making players run if they miss free throws in practice.
The Lady Cats now have a season record of 13-3. The Lady Cats play North Lamar Tuesday in Wildcats Gym at 5:45 p.m.

Meal A Day Drivers and Lowe’s Make Wish Come True for a Needy Shut-In
During a normal delivery morning of Meal a Day meals, two volunteer drivers discovered a real Christmas wish by a housebound homeowner whose is on their regular route. Here’s the story as told by Karon Weatherman, Seniors Center Director.
“This is a story of a very sweet woman whose storm door and front door were falling apart. Loyd and Mary Ivey deliver Meal A Day to her, her husband and her son every Monday. The couple took duct tape and did the best they could to repair the storm door. They went to one place in town for help and they said no, they could not help. Then, they went to Lowe’s in Sulphur Springs to ask if they could assist with this community need, and the manager, Russell, said not only would they replace the storm door but he would get them a new door as well. It took a lot of persistence and help from God but Ms. Lou Ella has two new doors. Merry Christmas to a sweet lady and her precious family. And thanks to Lowe’s for caring about our community!”

Sulphur Springs City/Mel Haven Cemetery Site of ‘Wreaths Across America’ Project Honoring Veterans

Over 100 persons gathered outside City Cemetery’s Myra Wilson Chapel on the morning of Saturday December 15, 2018 for the first local participation in the Wreaths Across America project. Following a brief ceremony, these participants helped place over 500 live fir wreaths upon the gravestones of military veterans in both the City and adjoining Mel Haven cemeteries. The wreaths, manufactured by the Worchester Wreath Company in Maine, were delivered on Friday December 14 to organizers Jimmy and Dena Loyd. With the help of volunteers, they had already marked each veteran’s grave with a small orange flag to assist the correct placement of the wreaths. On Saturday, the weather co-operated too, making a beautiful day for the community activity.

Retired Staff Sergeant James C. Bounds assisted the Loyds in organizing the public part of the ceremony. Local Boy Scout Troop 69 responded for posting of the colors. Members of a Girl Scout troop and local uniformed veterans responded for the laying of wreaths representing the various branches of the military. Speaking and signing the Pledge of Allegiance was Jacie Prichard, and the National Anthem was sung by Jackson Meeks. ‘Taps” was played by bugler Nathan Braddy of the SSHS Marching Band. Following a moment of silence, Bounds thanked the veterans in attendance for their sacrifices in keeping us free. He reminded those present that “Remember, Honor and Teach” are important messages that parents, grandparents, teachers, neighbors and others can send to young ones. He shared a quote from President Ronald Reagan; “Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn’t pass it on to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same, or one day we will spend our sunset years telling our children and our children’s children what it was once like in the United States where men were free.” Bounds also explained the meaning of the evergreen wreath as a symbol of unity and honor and reminded that the name of each veteran should be spoken at each gravesite during the ceremonial placing. He then dismissed the group to go into the cemeteries where wreaths were grouped at various stations.

The Wreaths Across America project began at Arlington National Cemetery in 1992, and has spread across the nation touching the lives of thousands of school, scout, civic and religious groups. Because of it, volunteers in towns and communities are moved to honor their fallen heroes on the designated day, December 15. According to the WAA website, “We understand we have Veterans Day in the fall and Memorial Day in the spring, but our service members sacrifice their time and safety every single day of the year to preserve our freedoms”. It’s mission is: REMEMBER our fallen U.S. veterans. HONOR those who serve. TEACH your children the value of freedom.

The Loyds laid their son, Staff Sergeant Chad Loyd, to rest in Sulphur Springs City Cemetery after he was killed in action in Iraq in 2006.
