To Name or Number? Commissioners Ask the Question in Work Session
Hopkins County Commissioners in work session Monday discussed the option of numbering or naming private roads in the county. According to County Judge Robert Newsom there are residents who wish to name the private road and others that desire numbering. Commissioners will meet again to discuss the issue. In the next meeting, they will hear from the 911 coordinator for the regional council of governments regarding the best steps to take. 911 dispatch desires to provide accurate and easily recognized addresses for those responding to the resident’s needs. Newsom said the decision will be made based on safety and efficiency.
According to their work session reports, the new courtroom at the Law Enforcement Complex should be ready for use in early February. Rain has hampered work on the new District Attorney/District Clerk office being built at that location. As of January 1st, the county is paying $1,700 per month in rent to the new owner of the space occupied by the District Clerk on Main Street. The space occupied by the DA’s office is rented in a trade. The county is providing space for the Chamber of Commerce until the DA’s office is completed.
In the next regular session of the court, commissioners will be appointing two or three new members to the civic center board.

Winter Chores for a Summer Bounty
by Gere Camper, from Hopkins County Master Gardeners
The weather outside may be frightful, but there is still a lot that can be done now to ensure a successful garden this year. A cold rainy day is a great time go through seed catalogs whether online or catalogs and decide what to grow. It’s always nice to add a new vegetable or flower or maybe a new variety such an heirloom tomato. It is important to select plants that are acclimated to the local hardiness zone which is 8A for Hopkins County. You can also find lists of good varieties at agrilifeextension.tamu.edu. When you know what you want to plant you can order your seeds or make a shopping list of transplants.
Some vegetables like radish or carrots will be directly seeded into the garden. Check the link above to find the recommended planting date and schedule a reminder on your calendar. Other plants like tomatoes and peppers are started from seed and then transplanted into the garden. You can determine how long it will take for the seeds to germinate and grew large enough to transplant by checking the seed packet or looking online. Subtract that time from the date to plant outside and you will know when to start the seeds and can schedule that date in your calendar. Transplants can also be bought locally at many locations if you don’t want to start your own.
You have determined what you are going to plant and when you will plant it and have scheduled the dates. The next winter chore is to decide where to plant. If you have an existing garden, rotate this year’s plants to a different area than last years. If the same types of plants go back into the same area, there is a chance that disease pathogens and fungal spores and pests or pest eggs will still be in the soil in that area. If you rotate your crops every year you are less likely to have a recurring disease and pest problems. Make a chart of what is planted where. This can be done in Excel or a similar program or on graph paper. This will help you plan next year’s crop rotation.
If you don’t already have a garden, it’s time to choose a spot for one. The garden spot should be sunny. Don’t forget that trees will put on leaves and the shade patterns will change. Try for at least eight hours of sun. Also look for an area with good drainage. The recent rains will let you know which areas drain well. If you still have standing water after a few sunny days, you will have trouble later. A soil test will also be helpful for either an existing or a new garden. The Hopkins County AgriLife Extension Office has test kits available. They are very simple to complete and send in and the results are usually ready in just a few weeks. The test will quickly pay for itself by ensuring that your plants get the nutrients they need to grow their best, and also by keeping you from buying and using fertilizers and supplements that your soil already has in sufficient quantities.
All of these chores can be finished now while it is too wet and cold to be working outside in your garden. Just looking at the pictures in a seed catalog will renew the desire to dig in the soil and smell the budding tomatoes plants. If you have any gardening questions contact any Hopkins County Master Gardener or the Hopkins County Extension Agent, Mario Villarino. Better yet, come to a Master Garden meeting at the Extension Office. The office manager there will have the details and any interested person is welcome. Growing your own food is good for your soul and eating fresh locally grown food is good for your body.

Lady Cats Face Lindale in Second District Game
Lady Cats Basketball Assistant Coach Jeremy DeLorge was on KSST Radio and Cable Channel 18’s Saturday Morning Coach Show after Friday’s night (January 4) loss at Royse City, 69-53 in the district opener for each team. He said Royse City, highly ranked in Class 5A, has a very good team. They feature a left handed 6-foot freshman and a coach’s daughter.
The Lady Cats, 0-1 in district play and 18-4 overall, play at Lindale Tuesday night. The Lady Eagles are also 0-1 in district play after losing at Mount Pleasant on Friday.
Coach DeLorge, an assistant for Head Coach Brittney Tisdell, said the Lady Cats started slowly in the game but rallied in a good third quarter. He said the Lady Cats trailed by only 9 points going into the fourth quarter.

Point guard Sadavia Porter led the Lady Cats third quarter charge scoring 15 of her 26 points in that period. Porter fouled out early in the fourth quarter.

Wildcats Win Final Pre-District Game; Begin District Friday
Wildcats Basketball Coach Clark Cipoletta, on KSST Radio and Cable Channel 18’s Saturday Morning Coaches’ Show, said the 94 points the Wildcats scored against Princeton last Friday night (January 4) at home were the most points scored by a Cipoletta coached team since he’s been in Sulphur Springs. He said the Wildcats’ offense did a good job of executing, knocking down shots, moving the ball inside and generally just firing on all cylinders. All the scoring was needed against a Princeton team that scored 84 points.
Coach Cipoletta said it wasn’t the best defensive job by the Wildcats but he said they got the job done. From the start, the Wildcats, now ranked #6 in Class 5A, played at a high tempo and Coach Cipoletta said the Wildcats knew that Princeton did not have a deep bench.

Day Day Hall scored 27 points including 12 in the first quarter. Coach Cipoletta said he doesn’t have to run plays for Hall to score. Day Day continues to get lots of offensive rebounds. The Wildcats used three point shooting in the second quarter hitting 5 of them.

Keaston Willis hit three in that quarter and ended up with 21 points. Coach Cipoletta said Willis seemed to play more relaxed after making a decision on his college future. Willis orally committed to The University of the Incarnate Word earlier in the week.

Coach Cipoletta said he was glad to see the team shoot the ball well. He said they struggled some early, especially making 3 point shots. Freshman Justin Haire, who played two games Friday, one as a freshman and one on varsity, scored his varsity high of 6 points. His dunk was popular with the Wildcats’ bench. Coach Cipoletta said it was cool that all the Wildcats got to play and all of them scored.
The Wildcats open district play Friday at home against Greenville. The game will feature the first back to back games with the Lady Cats and Wildcats playing on the same night. The Lady Cats will play at 6:15 p.m. with the Wildcats following at around 7:30 p.m.
Soccer: Wildcat, Lady Cat Coaches Comment on Tournament Play
Lady Cats Soccer Coach Joel Bailey Comments on Terrell Tournament
Lady Cats Soccer Coach Joel Bailey said the Lady Cats did not get the results they were looking for in a Terrell tournament last Friday and Saturday. The Lady Cats opened the tournament Friday with a 0-0 tie with Mesquite Poteet. Coach Bailey said Mesquite Poteet is a quality program and he added the tie left the Lady Cats feeling confident. Friday night the Lady Cats lost to a strong Red Oak team, 7-0. Coach Bailey said Red Oak jumped on the Lady Cats early. He noted that Red Oak ended up winning the tournament with a victory over Richardson in the final match. Saturday the Lady Cats lost to a solid Highland Park JV team, 10-1. Coach Bailey said Highland Park is a regular participant in the state tournament and they sometimes win it all. Still he said he would have liked to seen closer matches. Coach Bailey acknowledged that the Lady Cats were beat up and had illnesses during the tournament. He said he expects to get some starting key players back for the next tournament this week. Senior Jackie Esparza scored an unassisted goal against Highland Park JV. Coach Bailey said she was in the right place at the right time as a bouncing came right to her in the box. An accurate kick put it in the net.
The Lady Cats play next in a Princeton tournament. In pool play, the Lady Cats face Flour Mound Marcus Thursday at 10:30 a.m. Then they face the A-Plus Academy of Dallas Friday at 9:15 a.m. and San Angelo Lake View Friday at 4:45 p.m. Saturday games for the Lady Cats depend on earlier game results.
Wildcats Soccer Coach Alexi Upton Comments on Princeton Tournament
The Wildcats’ soccer team won one and lost one last Friday and Saturday (January 4-5) as they opened the regular season in a Princeton tournament. Wildcats Soccer Coach Alexi Upton said his team just wasn’t ready for the first game of the tournament in a 1-0 loss to Celina Friday. He said his team seemed to have a case of the nerves as they struggled in their first game of the season. Coach Upton said the Wildcats looked more like themselves and displayed positivity in a 2-1 win over host Princeton Saturday morning. He said the Wildcats led 2-0 for most of the game and only gave up a goal right at the end of the contest. The Wildcats got goals from junior Isaac Gutierrez and sophomore Alejandro Diosdado. Coach Upton said he hopes the two goals are something to build on.
He is looking forward to the Wildcats’ home opener Tuesday night against Nevada Community. A JV contest will begin at 5:30 p.m. with the varsity game at 7 p.m. at Gerald Prim Stadium.
