HEART MONTH: Cardiology is a Unique Sub-Specialty of CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital in Sulphur Springs

February is American Heart Month, designed to bring public attention and awareness to heart health and the prevalence and severity of heart disease in the United States. On the February 1 KSST Good Morning Show, we invited Dr. Jai Varma, Cardiologist with Advanced Heart Care and Nolan Willis, Director of the Cath Lab at CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital in Sulphur Springs to discuss heart care offered locally. Dr. Varma and his colleagues take pride in the wide range of services they can deliver to patients through CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital’s Cardiology department, from prevention, intervention, treatment and follow-ups.

Dr. Varma and the Advanced Heart Care Group of physicians provide 24/7 care in Cardiology, a medical specialty and a branch of internal medicine concerned with disorders of the heart. Back in 2008, a Hopkins County patient with a heart emergency generally was transported to a big-city hospital. Over the past 11 years, that scenario has changed dramatically as the local Cardiology department has been developed into an important sub-specialty unique in Northeast Texas. In fact, 90% of expert care required by persons with heart disorders can be delivered locally. According to Dr. Varma, this situation is unique is a city and hospital of our size.

According to Radiologist Technologist and Cath Lab Director Willis, everyone is invited to the local “Get Pumped” Lunch and Learn Heart Month event set for Wednesday February 13 at noon. It will be held in the meeting room of The Plaza, the 3-story building next to the hospital which is also the home of Advanced Heart Care. You can enjoy a sandwich and pick up valuable information about heart care, learn how stints work, meet a hospital pharmacist who can explain heart medications, find out more about Nuclear stress testing, and hear a presentation from Advanced Heart Care Cardiologist Dr. Allegetti. The public is encouraged to attend the free event.

In staying heart healthy, awareness and prevention are important first steps during Heart Month and year-round. Heart disease remains prevalent in our country and around the world. Statistics prove that heart disease is still the #1 killer in the United States, with one out of two men and one out of three women developing heart disease during their lifetime.

A special meeting of the Tira City Council was called for Monday, January 28th , for the purpose of discussing the needed repairs on the Community Center, due to the water damage, which happened in December. The group considered the estimates and made their selection. The repairs were scheduled to begin on Wednesday, January 30th . Another topic on the agenda was the property insurance. We recently learned that the carrier that we’ve had for several years is not renewing commercial policies.

Joyce Dodd would like to remind everyone about their Bible study at the Tira Methodist Church. The next session is scheduled for February 5 th at 1:00 p.m. Everyone is invited.

Evelyn Horne attended the Hopkins County Health Care Foundation Gala on Saturday night, January 26 th , at the Civic Center. Evelyn reports, “The theme was “Vegas” and the food, drinks, dancing, silent auction, and decorations were fabulous!”

Chip and I met our daughter and granddaughter, Tiffany and Jaidyn, and Tiffany’s fiancé, Perry Gilbert, of Malvern, Arkansas, at the Campbell gym for our great-grandson Rylan Joslin’s Little Dribblers basketball game. Rylan’s parents, Landon and Laiken, his brothers, Brailon and Slaiden, and Laiken’s mom, Leigh Ann, there to cheer him on, too. After the game, they went to eat at the White Oak Buffet. Chip, Tiffany, Perry, Jaidyn, and I went to Big Smith’s for barbecue, and then Jaidyn and the boys spent the night with us and went to church with us on Sunday morning.

I always need and appreciate input from my friends to help keep me informed of news in our community. If you have any news pertaining to Tira residents, past or present, please contact me, Jan Vaughn, at 903-945-2190 or 903-438-6688 or [email protected] .

Two Diabetes Series Available By Johanna Hicks
ksst ksstradio.com

Texas A&M AgriLife Extension provides numerous educational opportunities at low- or no-cost to individuals.  One of those banner programs is diabetes education.  Approximately 12% of Hopkins County residents have been diagnosed with diabetes (higher than the state of Texas and the U.S.) according to the Centers for Disease Control.    Unlike some other chronic diseases, diabetes can be controlled through four key factors:  nutrition, physical activity, monitoring blood glucose and taking prescribed medications.  Diabetes education is near and dear to my heart because of having a son who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 2.  He is now 26 years old and he and his wife are the proud parents of two beautiful little girls.

Two separate opportunities are available for anyone wanting to learn more about managing diabetes.  These classes do not take the place of a doctor’s visit, but they do provide research-based, evidence-based information in an easy-to-understand format, led by professionals in the health care field.
