Flood Warning for South Sulphur River Issued Until New Year’s Day Afternoon
Once again the South Sulphur River between Hopkins and Delta Counties is under a Flood Warning. This warning is in effect until Tuesday Afternoon. At 10:15 a.m. Monday, the river stage was just above the 16 feet flood stage. Minor flooding is occurring and minor flooding is forecast. The river will continue rising to a crest near 18 feet by Monday evening. The river should fall below flood stage Tuesday after midnight.
FM 71 in Hopkins County has remained closed due to flooding from previous warnings.
The National Weather Service advises that one not drive through flooded areas. Caution is urged when walking near riverbanks.

Commissioners Court Conducts Final Meeting of 2018
Hopkins County Commissioners Court ended 2018 with a court session Monday morning, December 31st. The court made appointments and conducted routine business in their final session of the year. They approved the updated 2018 Official Road Inventory for Each Commissioner. When the court meets in 2019 two new commissioners will sit on the court.
The court recognized retiring County Clerk Debbie Shirley following 44 years of service to the county. Shirley became a Deputy Clerk in 1974 and was elected Clerk for the County in 1996.
Danny Evans and Mike O’Dell were honored for their terms of service on the court. Evans, Commissioner Precinct 4, was elected in 2003 and did not seek re-election. Joe Price will take the Oath of Office Tuesday for Commissioner Precinct 4. O’Dell, Commissioner Precinct 2, served two terms as a commissioner and did not seek re-election. Greg Anglin will be sworn in Tuesday for that seat on the court.
Members of the court honored Nathan Bailey for his service to the county as representative to the Texas Rural Rail Transportation District Board of Directors. They appointed Brad Johnson to replace Bailey.

Adam Teer, Civic Center Manager, honored Jerry Dalton for 17 years of service to the civic center.

The court also appointed Charles Helm to the Civic Center Board of Directors.
DPS Arrests Two for UUMV, Meth, and Weapons
When the DPS Trooper stopped the speeding 2015 Nissan Pathfinder with Tennessee license plate at the 131-mile post on I-30, a check of the vehicle revealed it to be reported stolen. During inventory of the vehicle, a methamphetamine pipe containing residue which led to a probable cause search that revealed two handguns, a large quantity of methamphetamine, and assorted paraphernalia.
Arrested at the scene and transported to Hopkins County Jail were Travis W. Danker, 37, of Antioch, Tennessee, and Joseph Andrew Carpenter, 27, of Oak Lawn, Illinois.

Danker is charged with Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle, Possession of Controlled Substance Penalty Group 1, more than 4-grams but less than 200-grams, and Unlawful Carrying of a Weapon. He is being held on a total of $42,000 in bonds.

Carpenter is charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance Penalty Group 1, more than 4-grams but less than 200-grams and Possession of Firearm by a Felon. He is held on a total of $45,000 in bonds.
Winnsboro Police Department December 24-30, 2018
Winnsboro Police arrested two, investigated one non-injury accident, responded to 139 calls for service, issued 29 citations, and 48 warnings during the December 24-30 report period.
Stormee Light, 24, of Winnsboro, was arrested for Assault of a Public Servant.
Joshua Brown, 37, of Winnsboro, was arrested for Public Intoxication.
A two vehicle accident in the 700 block of South Main Street resulted in no injuries.

Lady Cats Win Championship at Idabel Winter Classic Tourney
The Lady Cats’ basketball team won the championship of the Idabel, Oklahoma Winter Classic Saturday night (December 29) with a 46-33 win over Hugo, Oklahoma.
A big third quarter for the Lady Cats helped the Lady Cats get the win. Both teams got off to a slow start in a game that was a rematch from eight days earlier in Hugo. The Lady Cats led 6-4 after one quarter and by 12-11 at the half. The Lady Cats outscored the Lady Buffaloes 19-9 in the third quarter to take a 31-20 lead into the final period. Hugo made a run at the Lady Cats in the fourth quarter getting to within 6 points. The Lady Cats closed out the game on a 7-0 run to wrap up the win.
The Lady Cats went 3-0 in the Idabel tourney defeating Arkansas High, Northwest Classen of Oklahoma City and Hugo, Oklahoma. The Lady Cats are now 18-3 for the season.
The Lady Cats open district play next at Royse City on Friday at 6:15 p.m.
Meanwhile additional details have been provided for the Lady Cats win Friday in Idabel against Classen. The Lady Cats led Northwest Classen 7-5 after one quarter, 17-9 at the half, 31-15 after three quarters and then 44-28 at the end. The Lady Cats shot 40% from the field but the cold shooting Oklahoma City high school only hit 24% from the field. Autumn Tanton led the Lady Citys with 16 points and she had a double double with 11 rebounds. Sadavia Porter scored 14 points, hit a three pointer and had 7 assists, 6 steals and 4 deflections. Latavia Smith scored 7 points hitting all three of her shots from the field. Te’Arria Rose had 3 points getting a three-point basket. Nylah Lindley had 2 points and Colbria Harrison and Aliyah Abron scored 1 point apiece. The Lady Cats had 24 turnovers but they also collected 18 steals.

Wildcats 1-2 in Prestigious Whataburger Tourney
The #8 ranked 5A Wildcats’ basketball team ended play in the 2018 Whataburger Tournament Saturday morning (December 29) with a 57-54 loss to Little Rock Parkview in the Birdville ISD W.G. Thomas Coliseum in Haltom City. The Wildcats went 1-2 in the prestigious tournament defeating #18 Class 6A Katy Morton Ranch while losing to eventual tournament champion #22 Class 6A Duncanville and to Little Rock Parkview, ranked #2 in their class in Arkansas. The Wildcats are now 13-8 for the season.
Wildcats Coach Clark Cipoletta said the Wildcats did not have their best offensive game against Parkview. He said the Little Rock school did a good job of beating up the Wildcats on the boards.
Keaston Willis led the Wildcats with 31 points. Willis also hit 5 three-pointers. Cameron Kahn scored 10 points. Sadaidriene Day Day Hall scored 4 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Xavier Cork had 4 points. Jeremiah Roland added 3 points. Boo Wilkerson scored 2 points.
Coach Cipoletta said the Whataburger Tournament was a great experience for the Wildcats. He said they got to see elite competition every game and got to play on the biggest of stages.
The Wildcats have one more non-district game before district play begins. The Wildcats play Princeton Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Sulphur Springs Gym. District play for the Wildcats begins January 11 at home against Greenville.

Lady Lions Boles Tourney Champion
The Saltillo Lady Lions went a perfect 4-0 in a Boles tournament to win the tourney championship. The Lady Lions won the title by defeating host Boles, 56-33 Saturday night (December 29).
The Lady Lions outscored Boles in every quarter leading 12-9 after one quarter, 30-19 at the half and 46-30 after three quarters. Maddy Smith led the Lady Lions with 18 points. Paisley Kastner added 10 points. Anna Reeder scored 9 points. Chandler Bain had 7 points. Jocelyn Ochoa scored 5 points. Kristina Wade had 3 points. Lorena Castro and Christy Marquez scored 2 points each. The Lady Lions were excellent from the foul line making 9 of 11 free throws.
The Lady Lions also topped Commerce, Big Sandy and Campbell during the Boles tournament. The Lady Lions are now 16-8 for the season. They play next at Avery on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

Lady Lions Win Two; Face Boles at Noon Saturday
Saltillo Lady Lions face Boles at noon Saturday, December 29th, as they conclude their run in the Boles Tournament. Lady Lions won two Friday. They defeated Big Sandy 56-51 and Campbell 55-50.
A strong first and third quarter against Big Sandy provided the margin for the win. Lady Lions scoring against Big Sandy: Anna Reeder, 23; Maddy Smith, 9; Jocelyn Ochoa, 8; Lorena Castro, 7: Chandler Bain, 7: and Paisley Kastner, 2. The Lady Lions were 18 for 22 from the free throw line in the game.
Again the Lady Lions had a strong first quarter that aided in the win against Campbell. Scoring for the Lady Lions: Anna Reeder, 21; Jocelyn Ochoa, 10; Chandler Bain, 10; Kristina Wade, 6; Paisley Kastner, 5; and Maddy Smith, 3. Lady Lions were 13 for 18 from the free throw line.
The Lady Lions go into the noon game with a 15-8 season record.
