Man Jailed For Allegedly Threatening Bailiff, Destroying Property
A 26-year-old Sulphur Springs man ended up in the county jail Thursday morning, after he allegedly threatened a courthouse bailiff.
Ramino Eliseo Hernandez was scheduled July 18 to appear in the County Court-At-Law at 9 a.m. for a pre-trial hearing on a September 19, 2018, driving while intoxicated charge, the court docket showed.
Hernandez reportedly became mad around 10 a.m. because his court date had been rescheduled for another day. Hernandez allegedly exited the courtroom on the first floor of Hopkins County Courthouse and destroyed county property in the hallway.
When the bailiff confronted him about what he had destroyed, Hernandez allegedly “threatened the bailiff, stating he would meet him when he got off of work and whip his butt,” according to arrest reports.
Hernandez was arrested on the third-degree felony charge of retaliation, and transported to the county jail by Deputy Alvin Jordan.

- Deputies responded to a suspicious person on HWY 80 near Mineola; at approximately 3:01 a.m. Deputies located the individual and provided a courtesy transport.

Misty Crawford, 41, of Quitman, was arrested for Manufacture Delivery of a Controlled Substance. Casey Curry, 36, of Quitman, was arrested for Manufacture Delivery of a Controlled Substance and outstanding warrants. Crime At 20-year Low In Sulphur Springs During First Six Months Of 2019
New record low set for burglaries
Crime declined in Sulphur Springs during the first half of 2019, with 26 fewer crimes recorded overall in the seven major crime reporting categories in 2019 than the 93 crimes recorded from Jan. 1-June 30, 2018, by Sulphur Springs Police Department.
That’s only the fifth time in 20 years that there have been fewer than 100 crimes recorded during the first half of the year, but marks the third consecutive year there have been less than 100 crimes recorded overall in the seven categories during the first six months of the year.
In fact, the 67 crimes recorded overall by SSPD during the first six months of 2019 is a new 20-year record low. The previous low for Jan. 1-June 30 was 72 crimes set in 2017, followed by 81 crimes in 2012, 93 in 2018 and 95 in 2011.
Crime declined in four of the seven major reporting categories, with the most significant declines in the burglary and theft categories.
Only 32 thefts of property valued at more than $200 were recorded in 2019, the same as in 2012, when the record low was set. That’s also 17 less thefts in 2019 than in 2018, and less than half the record high of 86 thefts recorded in 2006.
Only six burglaries were recorded in the first half of 2019 in Sulphur Springs, 14 fewer than in 2018. That’s a new record low for overall number of burglaries recorded. Previously the fewest overall number of burglaries during the first half of the year was set at 12 in 2017. The most burglaries posted during the Jan. 1-June 30 period was 70 in 2004.
The overall number of burglaries is the composite of building and home burglaries, which SSPD has tracked separately since 2004. New record lows were also set in each, with only three home and three building burglaries recorded by Sulphur Springs police during the first first six months of 2019. The previous low for home burglaries was seven in 2017. The previous low for building burglaries was set at five in 2013 and repeated in 2017. The overall high was 70 burglaries in 2004, the year home burglaries peaked at 47 and building burglaries climbed to a 20-year high of 23.
Sulphur Springs Police Chief Jason Ricketson attributed the decrease in these categories in 2019 to the hard work of officers out patrolling the streets and serving as a visible deterrent, as well as the work of police detectives on cases.
Two additional categories, homicide and sexual assault also declined.
There were no homicides recorded during the first half of 2019, the same as in 14 other years. That’s down from only one homicide in 2018, the same as reported in 2009, 2011 and 2015. The 20-year high for homicides recorded by SSPD during the first six months of the year was set at two in 2003.
There was also one less sexual assault recorded in the city from Jan. 1 to June 30, 2019, than the five of 2018. That’s still only one-third of the record high of 12 sexual assaults recorded in 2013.
Three robberies were reported during the first half of 2019, the same as in 2018, 2001, 2004 and 2007. The 20-year high of seven robberies was recorded during the first half of 2000; in only one year, 2014, were no robberies recorded by SSPD during the first half of the year.
While four categories declined, crime in two categories rose.
There were three more vehicle thefts recorded by SSPD from Jan. 1 through June 30 of 2019 than during the same period in 2018. While still more than three times the record low of four recorded in 2009, the 13 vehicle thefts recorded during the first half of 2019 was still only half the 20-year record high of 25 vehicle thefts reported in 2001 and repeated in 2003. It’s still the most vehicle thefts reported in the last 15 years, however.
Nine assaults other than simple assaults were reported in 2019. While less than half the 20-year record high of 20 aggravated assaults set in 2000 and repeated in 2001, that’s still nearly twice as many as in the first six months of 2018, when only one more aggravated assault was reported than the record low of four set in 2013.
Fundraiser for Jay’den Holly’s State Bid in Discus, Shotput at TAAF Tourney
Jay’den Brooke Holly is a 14-year old athlete who will be a Freshman Sulphur Springs High School Wildcat in August 2019. She transferred to Sulphur Springs Middle School earlier this year and brought along her interest in track and field events, particularly discus and shotput. She has been a member of the Texas Amateur Athletics Federation (TAAF) for the past two years, and competed on the State level last year. Now she is headed to the ‘State Games of Texas’ TAAF competition again, which will be held at Bryan College Station July 26-29, 2019. Over 5,000 athletes from 17 different Texas regions are expected to attend the Parade through the city and the meets. Jay’den’s trip will be assisted by proceeds from a Brisket Baked Potato fundraiser this Friday. Call in orders at 214-938-1461.
Jay’den is the daughter of Sonya Rush of Sulphur Springs and Christopher Holly of Dallas. A couple of years ago while attending Mesquite ISD, Jay’den participated in some track and field exercises during athletics class when her talent at throwing was discovered. Her mom got busy looking for summer camps for Jay’den and found TAAF, recommended by a cousin and former Wildcat athlete Carrington Chancellor. In 2018, Jay’den won at Regionals and competed at State and now, with another year of growth and experience behind her, Jay’don recently claimed a 1st in Discus and 2nd in Shotput. She got the chance to polish her form even more by attending the Michelle Carter Confidence Camp. Carter, a North Texas Olympic gold medalist, is a three-time Olympian whose camps inspire athletically talented women to set their goals high. Jayden proudly wears the t-shirt and the silver and gold medals she brought home from that camp. Jay’den was also selected as an “AVID” student (Advancement Via Individual Determination) for college readiness, and got to meet local elected officials and tour the courthouse and city hall.

During a KSST Good Morning Show interview, Enola Gay asked Jay’den what she would like to do in life if she could wish for anything at all. She immediately said “win the Olympics”. Of course she plans high school and has college plans too, and ultimately, she would like to become a defense attorney. Jay’den comes from a very supportive family with numerous athletes, including Wildcat cousins Chrysalyn Person, who excelled in gymnastics and Ariah Wade who is also headed to TAAF State in the Running Relay event.
Josh Davis Elvis Tribute Artist to Headline the July 20 Reilly Springs Jamboree
Josh Davis, a successful musical performer and Elvis Tribute Artist, is a native of Hopkins County. He got his start performing with a live band at the Reilly Springs Jamboree several years ago. Now 25 years old, Josh continues to travel to Oprys, festivals and private engagements and spends part of each summer competing in Elvis contests across the South. Just back with trophies from the Tupelo Elvis Festival in Tupelo, Mississipi the birthplace of Elvis, and the Elvis Tribute Continental in Orlando, Florida, Josh returns to his home stage in Hopkins County. He will headline the Reilly Springs Jamboree on Saturday July 20, 2019.
Josh remains very fan-friendly and looks forward to meeting friends old and new. The first hour starts at 6 pm and will feature Roger Reed and the Jamboree Band featuring Gary Jones, also the Winnsboro duo “Scatterproof” with Hanah and Hailee, young singers Ameri Shaye of Ben Wheeler and Miss Candy Rose of Kaufman, and an appearance by Sentimental Journey. Josh will open the second half of the show with a high-energy Elvis Presley tribute show plus favorites by Merle Haggard, George Jones and other country stars. Josh will also have photos and CDs to offer fans. The evenings’s entertainment will also include amusing anecdotes by Dr. Juan Harrison from his book “Mostly True Stories”. Admission is $10 per person. Additionally, the Reilly Springs Kitchen will offer a plate meal plus concessions and homemade desserts.
The Reilly Springs Jamboree began inside the Reilly Springs schoolhouse (now Community Center) in the autumn of 1956 just after the district had consolidated with the Sulphur Springs school system. The top country stars of the 1950’s and 60’s were booked and performed for standing room only crowds, with appearances promoted by KSST Radio. SCU Investigation Results In Search Warrant, 3 Arrests, Location of Methamphetamine
July 18, 2019 – An investigation by Sulphur Springs Special Crimes Unit officers into suspected drug activity resulted in two women and one man being arrested Wednesday. Methamphetamine was found at their East Industrial Drive residence.
SCU Lt. Mark Estes and Sgt. Joe Scott alleged 10 grams of methamphetamine was purchased from the occupants of the residence during four separate under cover buys during the course of their investigation.
The SCU officers, based on the evidence gleaned during their investigation, were able to obtain a search warrant for the residence, located in the 1500 block of East Industrial Drive. The search warrant was executed about 9 a.m. Wednesday, July 17.
The officers found approximately 4.7 grams of methamphetamine hidden in a pillow case in the bedroom and recovered it as evidence.
Consequently, all three residents — 48-year-old Dana Leeanne Goldsmith, 23-year-old Ashley Renea Young and 29-year-old Brandon Michael Petrea — were charged with possession of 4 grams or more but less than 200 grams of a Penalty Group 1 controlled substance. Goldsmith also was wanted for manufacture or delivery of 1 gram or more but less than 4 grams of Penalty Group 1 controlled substance, four warrants for no driver’s license, two warrants for no insurance and one warrant for expired registration.
All three remained in the county jail Thursday morning, July 18; bond was set at $45,000 each on the second degree felony controlled substance possession charge, according to jail reports. Fees Goldsmith owed on the traffic charges totaled $1,645.
