SSHS Well Represented At Robotics Competition

The Sulphur Springs High School Robotics team may not have scored high enough to advance to state, but overcame obstacles for a strong showing at the Collin County B.E.S.T. Robotics Competition Friday and Saturday, Oct. 25-26, according to robotics teacher Ruston Pennington.
“They represented us well and worked hard until the end. Unfortunately, they had a very hard day fighting equipment failures and the competition was very strong. Many teams, including ours, did not get a chance to score any points during the game. We still came out of the game with 3 to 6 out of the 15 available tournament points for our overall place in the game,” Pennington stated.
The robotics score includes more than just performance in the game, which allowed the students to earn additional points and valuable experience.
“Some students represented us with a expo booth that was an arcade powered by a bicycle generator. Others had to sell the robot in a formal marketing pitch to a panel of investors (think Shark Tank). And, most importantly, their efforts in design and development were put together in an engineering notebook,” Pennington noted.
Each aspects of the competition was worth more points in the tournament than the game performance. Students scored in all areas. While SSHS Robotics Team’s overall place in the tournament (which featured 38 competitors) has not been revealed yet, Pennington said they are aware they did not that we did not advance to state. Only the top two large schools advance.
“I’m extremely proud of their effort on competition day and their attitudes in the face of difficulty. They kept working until the last seeding round and worked continuously to do the best they could,” Pennington said.
“We are looking forward to the next set of competitive events in February, and plan on repeating our wins at district and state, and we will be strong contenders for nationals!” he added.
JBT Marketing Conducting Photo Fundraiser For Pickton-Pine Forest VFD
Proceeds Will Go To Fire Department To Be Put Toward Cost of New Breathing Packs
Pickton-Pine Forest Volunteer Fire Department officers Monday announced a photo fundraiser in progress.
The fire department has contracted with JBT Marketing, Inc. Representatives of the business will be contacting people in the VFD service area to offer photography lots for $40 for an 8 inch by 11 inch photo.
During the photo shoot, those making a purchase are welcome to as many takes as they want. Prices of photo packages will be discussed at viewing of proofs, according to the announcement.
While visiting home for the fundraiser, JBT Marketing employees will either be wearing a fire department t-shirt or ball cap. They also are supposed to be wearing a traffic vest and name tag identifying themselves as “Representatives.” They may arrive in either a blue 2012 Honda Ridgeline truck or red 2014 Ford Focus.
Profits and proceeds from the fundraiser will go toward fire department equipment to better serve the community. Pickton-Pine Forest VFD is currently in need of replacing our breathing packs for firefighting, which cost approximately $20,000 or more, the fundraiser noted.

4 Booked Into Hopkins County Jail On Felony Warrants Over The Weekend
At least four people were booked into Hopkins County jail over the weekend on outstanding felony controlled substance warrants, according to arrest and jail reports.
Anthony Wayne Dugan, 38, of North Richland Hills was transported by HCSO Deputy Jason Poteet from Lubbock County Detention Center at 4:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25, to Hopkins County jail on a warrant for violation of probation on a felony bail jumping/failure to appear charge. He also reportedly had an outstanding driving while license invalid warrant as well, according to jail reports.
Hopkins County Sheriff’s Sgt. Scott Davis took Linda Burrows Miears, 55, of Sulphur Springs into custody round 6:45 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, at her Davis Street residence on two warrants for violation of probation, which she was on for manufacture or delivery of less than 1 gram of a Penalty Group 1 controlled substance in a drug-free zone and theft of property valued at $1,500 or more but less than $20,000.
Michael Keith Rhodes, 54, of Sulphur Springs was taken into custody by HCSO Sgt. Scott Davis at 11:07 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25, at his Airport Road residence on two warrants for violation of probation on possession of less than one gram of a Penalty Group 1 controlled substance charges. Davis transported Rhodes to the county jail, where he remained on both charged Monday morning, Oct. 28, according to arrest and jail reports.
Friday marked the second time Rhodes has been arrested this month. He was arrested by deputies on Oct. 10 for possession of 0.7 gram of a substance that field-tested positive as methamphetamine, allegedly found in his wallet during a traffic stop, the sheriff’s officers alleged in reports earlier this month. He was released from jail Oct. 14 on $5,000 bond on that charge, according to jail reports.
HCSO Deputy Nick Marney took custody of Quentin Lee Wright, 28, of Sulphur Springs at 8:35 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25, and transported him from Lamar County jail to Hopkins County jail, where he was held for surety off bond on a delivery of 1/4-ounce to 5 pounds of marijuana charge, according to arrest reports. His new bond was set at $5,000 on the charge, according to jail reports.
Wright has been booked into Hopkins County jail on two other occasions this year. He was arrested on Feb. 10 for possession of drug paraphernalia and on May 20 on a warrant for delivery of 1/4-ounce to 5 pounds of marijuana, according to jail reports.

Tyler Woman Arrested In Cumby On Controlled Substance Charge
A 22-year-old Tyler woman was jailed Saturday evening after being found Cumby police found prescription medication in a Tylenol bottle in her possession, according to police reports.
Cumby Police Officer Zack Steward reported stopping a Chevrolet 1500 pickup about 4:15 p.m. Oct. 26 on Commerce Street after noticing the woman driving didn’t have on a safety belt. The driver was identified as 22-year-old Montasia Ry Coughlin of Tyler, Steward noted in arrest reports.
After contacting her, the officer alleged the woman opened the console and he observed a firearm in the pickup. She was reportedly asked to get out of the pickup and for permission to search the vehicle.
A pill container with an Adderall and a Tylenol bottle with several Xanax and several Ecstasy pills were allegedly found in the truck, resulting in Coughlin’s arrest for possession of 1 gram or more but less than 4 grams of a Penalty Group 2 controlled substance, Steward wrote in arrest reports.
She remained in the county jail Monday morning. Bond was set at $10,000 on the felony charge, according to jail reports.
Winners in Annual 42 Contest at Seniors Ctr!
Each Fall, Karon Weatherman plans a 42 Tournament for the community. It’s evident, 42 is still a pretty cool game and it appeals to more than one generation! In fact, the tradition of the Earl W. Martin 42 Tournament is being carried on by his son, Ronnie Martin, who also loves to play the game. He was at the Tournament and appears in photos with the 2019 winners. Twenty-six two-person teams entered the competition, with tables filling the available floor space at the Senior Citizens Center.

Stewpot Showdown! Scenes from History-making Stew Day 2019
Stew Day in Sulphur Springs, Texas dawned energizingly cool but quite damp from overnight rains, however that did not dampen the spirits of the cooks and volunteers busily preparing the official dish of Hopkins County! Pictured are just a few of the individual camps where cooking teams were ready to compete for the for the biggest World Championship Hopkins County Stew Contest to date: the 50th Anniversary contest! Again, this is just a small portion of the campsites. With 187 sites ballooning out to the fringes of Buford Park, I did not get to visit every site! So, in addition to this photo collection, please watch KSST’s Cable Channel 18 TV’s coverage of individual sites and the presentation of winners. Within the program, we will place all the 2019 Stew activities and replay the program numerous times into early November. Every participant is to be congratulated! Enjoy!
Sulphur Springs Police Arrest Pittsburg Man On Warrant Following Crash
A 36-year-old Pittsburg man was arrested on a felony warrant following a crash Saturday night.
Sulphur Springs Police Officer Tyler Francis responded in the 1600 block of Posey Lane Oct. 26. Upon arrival, Francis contacted Christian Emmanueil Bruffy Holmes with a Saturn Vue at the location, according to arrest reports.
A records check by dispatchers revealed an outstanding Wood County warrant for Bruffy-Holmes’ arrest. The 36-year-old Pittsburg man was taken into custody at 7:40 p.m. Oct. 26 on the Wood County possession of less than 1 gram of a Penalty Group 1 controlled substance warrant, according to jail reports. Bond on the charge was set at $5,000, according to arrest reports.
Hay Show 2019 Won by Hopkins and Rains County Forage Producers
Held in the Autumn of the year following hay season, the Hopkins County Hay Show is a long-standing tradition. The tradition continued this year with a new title, the Hopkins/Rains County Hay Show sponsored by Natural Resources Conservation Services and organized by the Hopkins/ Rains Soil and Water Conservation District. This year, 38 producers entered samples for the contest. The samples were collected at Texas Agri-life Extension offices and chemical analysis on each sample was provided by the Northeast Texas Farmer’s Co-op. Speaker for the event was Andy Wright, a NRCS board member and President of Hopkins/Rains County Farm Bureau. The contest and a producer’s lunch was held at the Hopkins County Civic Center on Saturday October 26, 2019.
After opening remarks by Wright, prayer was lifted by Cody Koon followed by fellowship and a BBQ lunch prepared by Wright’s Catering. As the program got underway, the SWCD “Producer’s Package” was explained by Darron Smith, Wright introduced the top ten producers, winners were announced based on chemical scores, and Wade Bartley led an auction of the winning samples. Auction proceeds were earmarked for student Scholarships in place by the Hopkins/Rains Soil and Water Conservation District. A group photo was made of the top ten producers present.
