Thursday Sept. 11th is Patriot Day, not to be confused with Patriot’s Day in April. Though not a national holiday, Patriot Day is a flag-flying day of observance of 9/11/2001. In Sulphur Springs, flags on the downtown square will be lowered at 7am tomorrow (Thursday) by the Hopkins County Marine Corps League. League members will also lay a wreath on the square in memory of 9-11 victims. All Americans are encouraged to fly Old Glory at their homes on Thursday.

The three-day Dare to Dream Camp got underway Wednesday at Douglas Intermediate School in Sulphur Springs. 120 fifth graders to be at Douglas registered to attend the leadership building camp. Around 100 high school students are serving as mentors. Jeff Harris, the school district Character Curriculum Director, developed the program. It utilizes the movie Remember the Titans. All Hopkins County Schools will find benefit from the 4th Annual Pack the Bus, a school supply drive, sponsored by CANHelp, 613 Gilmer Street. The drop-off of school supplies is Friday, August 8th from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. Donations will also be received by CANHelp during regular business hours any other day. The Hopkins County 4H kids from four chapters invited to Tuesday’s (July 1st) Day Camp at Heritage Park were promised crafts and games, a step back in time. The 4her’s tried their hands at tin punch, making butter, woodworking and the centuries old art of paper decorating called quilling.
