United Way Off To a Good Start
The Hopkins County United Way is off to a good start toward their goal of $160,000 this year. At the first report meeting Tuesday morning, a total of $21,230 was reported. This year’s Hopkins County Hay Champion is Marilyn Smith. Her hay received the highest hay score at the 2014 Hopkins County Hay Show. Ms. Smith’s hay was purchased by Alliance Bank for $1,000. Authorities Searching for Suspects in Harrison County Cattle Theft Case
Marshall, Texas – Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association (TSCRA) Special Ranger Larry Hand and the Harrison County Sheriff’s Department are seeking information on the theft of 12 head of livestock, three saddles, seven bridles and several tools that were stolen from a Harrison County cattle ranch sometime between Monday, Sept. 29 and Tuesday, Sept. 30. Tax Notices are Coming Soon to Hopkins County Property Owners
Nearly 13,000 Sulphur Springs ISD notices are already in the mail. Taxpayers have until January 31 to pay their tax bill without any penalty or interest. The school district tax rate went down 1-cent per $100 valuation. Property values increased 4.4% in the school district.
The New Jail is Moving Along Nicely
The work crew building the new Hopkins County Jail began putting in piers for the foundation Monday. A little bit of dirt work remains to be done elsewhere. A total of 103 piers will be put some 20 to 30 feet deep unto shale. Workers are hoping to have them all done by the end of the week. County Judge Robert Newsom says the project is 11 days behind schedule due to discoveries made during earthwork.
Possible Location Change For County Genealogical Society
Behind the scenes, the city of Sulphur Springs has been working to strike a deal where the Hopkins County Genealogical Society would move out of their prime Main Street building into the meeting room at the city Public Library. In God We Trust
Meeting Monday, the Hopkins County Commissioners Court voted unanimously to adopt the national motto In God We Trust as their own. A plaque in the Commissioners Courtroom now indicates it. County Judge Robert Newsom said over 100 cities in California have also done this as well as some cities and counties in Texas.
