Lady Cats Volleyball Takes Royse City to Fifth Set Before Losing Heartbreaker, 3-2 Tuesday Night

A grueling district volleyball match between the Lady Cats and Royse City Tuesday night ultimately came down to a fifth and deciding set which the Lady Bulldogs won at home taking the match, 3-2. The anticlimactic fifth set was won by Royse City, 15-7 as the Lady Cats struggled. The Lady Cats got off to a slow start in set one trailing 8-1. Still they rallied and had a catch to get the set at the end. It was tied 22-22 at one point. Royse City scored three of the last four points to take set one, 25-23. The Lady Cats took set two but it was not easy. Late in the set, the Lady Cats went up 22-17. After a series of officials calls went against them, the match was tied 23-23. The Lady Cats managed to eke out a 26-24 win to even the match 1-1. Royse City seemed to have set three wrapped up leading 24-19. The Lady Cats got to within 24-23 but the Lady Bulldogs got a set point to win 25-23 and go up, 2-1. In set four, the Lady Cats appeared to have things in hand late as they were up 22-18. Royse City got to within 22-21 before the Lady Cats captured the set by scoring the last three points. The 25-21 Lady Cats win evened the match at 2-2 setting up the one sided set five. In unofficial kill stats, Sadie Washburn had 17, Nylah Lindley and Sydney Washburn had 8, Brooklyn Burnside had 6 and Erika VanBenthem had 4. Czhela Moya and Sadie Washburn had two service aces. Burnside had a block. The Lady Cats and Royse City are now tied for third place in the district standings with 3-3 records. The Lady Cats season record is 21-14. The Lady Cats play at Lindale Friday at 5 p.m.
