Over 8,000 Hopkins County Registered Voters Cast Primary Ballots; Cruz, Clinton Carry County

ksst ksstradio.comFor Hopkins County only 18.97% of registered voters cast a ballot in the March 1st Primary Election. Votes cast totaled 8,073.

Hopkins County Republican voters followed the Texas pattern as they gave Texas Senator Ted Cruz 46.24% of the local vote or 3,213 votes in the Presidential Primary Tuesday. Donald Trump was a distant second in the county with 29.77% of the vote or 2,069 votes. Marco Rubio was the only other double digit percentage candidate. Rubio garnered 12.20% of the county vote or 848 votes.

Democrats in Hopkins County gave Hillary Clinton 66.81% of the vote or 628 votes. Bernie Sanders was a distant second with 298 votes.

Republicans in the county gave strong support to incumbent Congressman John Ratcliff. Ratcliff received 4,039 votes or 65.73% of the vote. State Representative Dan Flynn did not fare as well with only 49.89% of the county vote. Flynn received 2,958 votes to challenger Bryan Slaton’s 2,971.

Although Keven Ellis visited the county in his quest for State Board of Education, District 9, he only gained 31.41% of the vote with Mary Lou Bruner taking 49.23%. The winner of that race in the district will face a Democrat opponent in November.

Lewis Tatum was elected Sheriff of Hopkins County following the endorsement of Republicans in the primary. No one sought the Democrat nomination.

Maci Mattison Newsom will face Mickey Barker in a May 26th runoff.
