Final Downtown Road Reconstruction Comes To An End
The last of the road reconstruction projects in downtown Sulphur Springs has been completed. Davis Street near new City Hall was reopened for traffic just before 2 p.m. Wednesday (July 2nd). Brashear Baptist Church will be having its’ second annual 4th of July Celebration Friday. Activities in and around the Family Life Center get underway at 6 p.m. There is no cost to attend. Charges, Bond Set For Aggravated Robbery Suspect
37-year old Alan Dale Rhys of Saltillo was charged with aggravated robbery before JP Ronny Glossup who set bond at $50,000. Rhys is accused of roughing up his grandfather and taking his vehicle just after 2 a.m. Monday (June 30th). The vehicle was found wrecked in Franklin County later. At their last meeting, the board of Hopkins County Memorial Hospital voted to go on to phase two planning for the hospital possibly getting involved in a Graduate Medical Education Program with UT Health North East in Tyler. During a twenty-five minute meeting Tuesday night, the Sulphur Springs City Council approved on first reading two ordinances that were postponed last month. Grasshoppers are once again bothering Hopkins County residents’ in-town gardens and out of town fields. AgriLife Extension Agent Dr. Mario Villarino says there are just a few options for treating gardens growing food. He says one option is to use a net to cover the garden. Second Annual Tomato Festival
The second annual Tomato Festival will take place at the Celebration Market Saturday evening, July 5th on the Plaza. Those who bring three samples can have tomatoes judged in pear, cherry and large categories. Rainfall Deficit Continues To Climb
Another drier than normal month added to the rainfall deficit in Sulphur Springs in June. Recorded rainfall at the city Water Treatment Plant in June was only 2.64 inches, two inches below average. The current rain deficit for the first six months of the year is 8.1 inches. Average for the first six months is 24.33 inches and Sulphur Springs has received only 16.23 inches.
