Wildcats Basketball Clinches No. 1 Seed with Win Tuesday

Wildcats Basketball Clinches No. 1 Seed with Win Tuesday

Coach Brandon Shaver’s team has a great opportunity Tuesday.

In Paris at North Lamar Tuesday, if his team can take care of business and pick up the win, the Wildcats clinch the No. 1 seed for the playoffs.

The Panthers (2-5, 5th in 15-4A), won only their second game in district play Friday when they beat winless Pittsburg 49-42.

They have a much tougher test ahead of them Tuesday, Feb. 7 when they host Sulphur Springs.

Wildcats basketball (7-0) on the other hand has cruised through much of their district season.

Coach Shaver’s squad has won nearly half of their games up to this point by 20 points or more.

That includes their most recent game, at home Friday against Liberty Eylau. Sulphur Springs got out to another commanding lead, a common thread in those blowout district victories, leading 16-5 after one quarter.

Even though the Leopard offense came to life thereafter, Coach Shaver’s team did what they do best in not only keeping stride with the competition, but blowing past them.

The two schools kept it even in the second, but as has often been the case the opposition ran out of gas as the Wildcats won big 66-46.

That, and a nearly identical 69-47 win the night before on Thursday and Sulphur Springs finds themselves 7-0 with only three games left.

Coach Brandon Shaver’s team is now 25-7 on the season.

The Wildcats basketball team holds a three game lead on the competition with as many left, so a win Tuesday at North Lamar gives Sulphur Springs the No. 1 seed come playoff time.

That game tips off Tuesday, Feb. 7 in Paris at 7 P.M.

Wildcats Soccer Hosts Liberty Eylau Monday

Wildcats Soccer Hosts Liberty Eylau Monday

Coach Alexi Upton and his team are at home Monday, Feb. 6 hosting Liberty Eylau.

The Wildcats are riding high following their win Friday at Pleasant Grove.

In Texarkana, Sulphur Springs beat the Hawks 4-3 in PKS.

The men’s soccer coach said it was a great result in a hostile environment. Even with that, he applauded his team for their composure in fighting for the three points awarded in overtime wins.

Neither team could put one in the net in regulation, nor could they do the same in overtime, so Friday, Feb. 3’s district contest had to be decided in penalty kick shoot-out.

It was only then that the game could come to a conclusion, as the Wildcats edged-out the Hawks 4-3 in PKS to win their first district contest.

A duel to the glorious end, Coach Upton’s team came out on top against a top-20 team in 4A Region 2.

Following the PKS win, Sulphur Springs is 8-7-1 on the season (1-0 district).

They host Liberty Eylau on Monday, making up a game that’s was originally scheduled to be played last Tuesday.

In what should have been the Wildcats district opener, the game with the Leopards had to be pushed back due to ice and snow causing poor driving conditions throughout Texas last week.

Now, Coach Upton and his squad host L.E. on Monday, Feb. 6 for their first district game at the Prim.

JV gets the action going on Monday at 4:30 P.M. playing Mount Vernon, followed by the varsity match against the Leopards at 6 P.M.

Gov. Greg Abbott Issues Emergency Declaration Amid Winter Weather

Feb. 6, 2023- Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbott issued an emergency declaration in response to the ice storm that has impacted the state, causing property damage, travel disruptions and power outages.

The Declaration covers Denton, Hays, Henderson, Milam, Smith, Travis and Williamson counties. Abbot stated that additional counties could be added to the list as damage assessments are currently still underway. Abbot also asked for any residents who have damages on their homes or businesses to report them using the Individual State of Texas Assessment Tool.

“The State of Texas has provided all assistance requested throughout the severe weather this week, and we continue to ensure that communities across our state have the resources and support they need to recover from the winter weather event,” Abbot stated during a interview.

“Through this disaster declaration, we will be able to provide additional assistance to Texans and communities who have experienced property damage and localized power outages from this ice storm,” he continued. “Texans are encouraged to continue reporting damages to the iSTAT damage survey, so we can meet all needs in the recovery process.”

Currently repairs to infrastructures, the removal of limbs and debris and the assessment of total damages are currently underway.

The declaration has allowed the usage of all available resources of “state government and of political subdivisions that are reasonably necessary to cope with this disaster.”

Lady Cats Basketball Goes 2-0 in Road-Stand, Hosts Senior Night Tuesday
basketball

Last week Coach Brian Jones and his team were scheduled to play Tuesday and Friday, at Paris and North Lamar, but poor road conditions due to snow throughout Texas forced their match at Paris Tuesday to be pushed back.

As a result of schools reopening Thursday, that was the earliest Lady Cats could get back into action.

Coach Jones and his team as a result faced a huge road-stand, on Thursday and Friday playing at Paris and Liberty Eylau.

The two schools came into those contests the current third and second seeds, respectively.

After the dust settled Friday night though, Lady Cats basketball found themselves going a perfect 2-0 in back-to back nights.

Thursday, in Paris to begin two district games in as many days, Sulphur Springs played in a tight affair, getting their revenge on Paris on their home court 49-42.

Both teams came into Thursday’s contest 4-3, tied for third in district 15-4A.

Following that win though, Coach Jones and his team still had to play a second game in two nights at Liberty Eylau.

The Lady Leopards (6-2) entered Friday night’s district match-up one game ahead of the Lady Cats, but left their own gym tied with them for second place.

Sulphur Springs won a second straight revenge match thanks to a gaping lead heading into the second half. After just one quarter, the basketball team led Liberty Eylau 15-3. Heading into the locker room for the break, Coach Jones and his team led by almost as much, 30-19.

The two schools kept it pretty much ten from there, as their early deficit proved too much to overcome. The Lady Cats went on to win 47-35 in Texarkana.

Following two huge wins, the women’s basketball team are tied with L.E. 6-3 with just one game left.

Not only that, but a win Tuesday versus unbeaten North Lamar would clinch the second seed come playoff time. But, if L.E. has the same result as Sulphur Springs on Tuesday night, the two schools would then play a tiebreaker for the two seed.

Regardless, the Pantherettes come to Sulphur Springs Tuesday for the Lady Cats’ senior night.

Festivities are set to begin prior to the 6:30 P.M. tipoff.

The women’s basketball senior night will be broadcasted onto KSST 1230 AM. Tuesday’s match-up with North Lamar will also be live-streamed onto KSST Radio’s Youtube channel.
