Sulphur Springs Native Wins World’s Strongest Firefighter Title

Sulphur Springs Native Wins World’s Strongest Firefighter Title

March 20, 2023- Columbus, Ohio held the Arnold Sports Festival earlier this month with over a hundred contestants coming to compete for the title of World’s Strongest firefighter. The man who took this title is Andrew Burton a native of Sulphur Springs, Tx. Burton is currently a firefighter in Rockwall.

“When I was standing on stage at the end, I was so overwhelmed that I couldn’t concentrate on what any of the presenters were saying. All I could do was focus on enjoying the moment, hold back tears and listen for my name,” Burton said. “Then, when I heard my name, I walked to Arnold, who presented me with my axe (trophy). It was just a dream come true to go there and win.”

This mentioned Arnold was none other than former bodybuilder, movie star, and California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, the namesake of the Arnold Sports Festival.

The events within this competition are as follows:

  • A lateral axe hold, in which competitors had to hold a pair of axes (each with a 25 pound weight hung around the handle) straight out to either side and hold them up for as long as possible;
  • A sandbag carry, in which they had to carry three sandbags (one weighing 220 pounds, another weighing 250 pounds, and finally one weighing 300 pounds) for 40 feet in as short a time as possible;
  • A fire hydrant load, in which they had to lift and set four fire hydrants (one weighing 175 pounds, a second weighing 200 pounds, a third weighing 225 pounds, and a fourth weighing 250 pounds) onto a platform in as short a time as possible, and;
  • An ambulance tire deadlift, in which they had to lift a bar with three ambulance tires on either end (weighing a total of 600 pounds) as many times as they could in 60 seconds.

Over the two-day competition, Burton rose above the rest of the 120 different competitors from around the world, even out climbing the final 18 finalists.

Burton first began his journey to this recent victory when he was a student athlete.

“I played football in middle school and high school and liked lifting the big weights, so I was in powerlifting too,” Burton said. “Actually, I was hoping to get a college scholarship for powerlifting, but that didn’t work out, so after high school I went to the fire academy and put my focus toward getting a job.”

“Of course, as a firefighter, you’re always working out and conditioning yourself, and I enjoyed watching strongman competitions on TV, where people lift large, odd objects,” Burton said. “It appealed to me because I figured it applied to firefighting a lot more than doing the same three moves over and over like with powerlifting.”

Burton stated he enjoyed “chasing the big numbers” during his strength training. Burton cites his career as a firefighter as his motivation in his strength training.

“Firefighting really doesn’t feel like work to me, because I get to go on calls and I get to tear stuff up — buildings, cars, everything,” he said. “Getting stronger and taking conditioning to a higher level helps me to be better at my job and to be better at helping people.”

Burton has been competing in strong man competitions for two years now, however only recently before the World’s Strongest Firefighter competition did he discover it existed.

“It was something that I found online by accident,” Burton said. “When I saw it though, I thought it would be good to enter because I’d be competing against other people who are dealing with the same things that I am. As a firefighter, sometimes you miss training days, sometimes you miss out on meals, and these guys were all training and competing while having the to deal with the same challenges that I go through.”

“I was also drawn to it because of the spirit of camaraderie that firefighter everywhere share,” he added.

“I’m grateful and I’ve been absolutely blown away by all the love and support that’s been sent my way, especially from people in Rockwall and Sulphur Springs,” Burton said. “I’m also glad to bring this title to Texas for the first time.”

Burton has unsurprisingly been greeted with cheers and congratulations of his victory. Burton stated how touched he felt by the community by the support they have given him since his return.

Survivors Of Childhood Sex Abuse On Current Proposed Texas Legislation

Survivors Of Childhood Sex Abuse On Current Proposed Texas Legislation

March 20, 2023- The 88th session of the Texas State Legislature has convened, currently 3 House Bills and one Senate Bill have been filed. These bills concern the reform of the civil Statue of Limitations for childhood sex abuse crimes.

Currently the House Bills  HB206HB3533 and HB4601 are in the House Committee on Judiciary & Civil Jurisprudence, The Senate Bill SB751 is currently in the Senate State Affairs Committee. Survivors Of Childhood Sex Abuse (SCSA) is fighting to reform the statute of limitations for sex crimes against children. The most important point for SCSA is not the removal of the statue of limitations, but those who it will apply to.

SCSA has stated to have adopted a grading system for the current bills within legislation and has graded the bills from A-F and has given to the public their “Report Card”. Currently these grades are:

  • HB206A – Not only does this bill eliminate the Statute of Limitations for sex crimes against our children, but it has a retroactive feature, giving current victims a path to justice.
  • SB751A – Is a Senate companion bill, and is identical to HB206.
  • HB3533C – Addresses the Statute of Limitations issue, but does not have a retroactive feature or “Lookback Window.” We feel this bill could achieve a higher grade through legislative amendments, or the inclusion of a retroactive feature, or at the minimum, a limited “Lookback Window.”
  • HB4601F – Protects the Institutions and Organizations that must be held legally accountable for their crimes. It also proposes background checks and safety programs at these entities that, frankly we consider extremely weak. We do not feel this bill can achieve a higher grade through any means, and is lobbied by the institutions and organizations that are responsible for the rape of our children in the first place.

The SCSA is an advocacy and support organization for victims and survivors of childhood sex abuse. SCSA is a nonprofit Organization. The Organization hopes to empower Survivors of Childhood Sex Abuse with resources and support to self-advocate and reclaim their life’s potential.

Wildcats Baseball looks to pick up first district win Tuesday

Coach Jerrod Hammock and Wildcats baseball look to pick up their first win in district play Tuesday.

The squad heads to Paris Tuesday for their third game in district play.

Last week Sulphur Springs began 15-4A play when they played their first two contests.

Unfortunately for Wildcats baseball, they started district play against the two teams who may be fighting for the top seed in Texarkana’s Liberty Eylau and Pleasant Grove.

Last Tuesday at L.E. Coach Hammock’s team managed just one hit in their 10-0 loss in Texarkana. Dane Oud singled in his and the team’s last at-bat in the top of the 5th but fell due to the 10-run rule.

While an 0-1 start is less than ideal, following up L.E. with Pleasant Grove is even less desirable.

The two Texarkana schools in 15-4A are ranked #25 and #9 in all of 4A, respectively.

On Friday Wildcats baseball hosted PG, with similar results a Tuesday’s game. Sulphur Springs managed just one hit, while giving up a costly six errors in the 11-0 loss to the Hawks.

Evan Moore provided the lone hit in a single in the third inning.

But after two tough losses, Coach Jerrod Hammock’s squad next heads to Paris for their third district game.

That game tees off in Paris Tuesday, Mar. 21 at 7 P.M.

Friday Wildcats baseball returns home to Wildcat Park, hosting North Lamar.

That game will be broadcasted not only onto KSST 1230 AM, but Friday’s district match-up with the Panthers will also be live-streamed onto KSST Radio’s Youtube channel.

Coming up the day before, on Thursday, both soccer teams play in Lindale in a playoff double-header.

The Lady Cats kickoff at 5 P.M. versus Tyler Chapel Hill, with the men’s team set to follow at 7 P.M. versus Athens.

Both playoff games on Thursday will be broadcasted onto KSST 1230 AM but will not be live-streamed.

State Steer And Heifer Validation Pre-Orders Due March 31, 2023 At Noon. By Mario Villarino

The mission of the youth livestock validation program is to promote a positive youth development environment focused on ensuring rules for livestock exhibition are being followed under the supervision of County Extension Agents and Agricultural Science Teachers. This helps to foster integrity, virtues, and values of youth and families.

The purpose of validation is to encourage positive relationships with County Extension Agents, Agricultural Science Teachers and local stakeholders, create a level playing field for youth livestock projects, maximize youth experience and life skill development, and facilitate youth engagement with livestock projects.

Validation allows youth to build on life skills such as responsibility, respect, teamwork and communication. By participating in the livestock project, youth exhibitors learn daily care, nutrition, reproduction, and production practices specific to livestock projects.

For the 2023-2024 steer and heifer state validation year an eartag will be needed to be pre-ordered. All tags are $25 each (not refundable). Youth participating in the steer and heifer project most contact their FFA advisor or the Texas Agrilife Extension (for 4-H members) to place eartag orders, and pay for them before March 31, 2023 at noon.
