Library Hosts Will Presentation Thursday

Library Hosts Will Presentation Thursday

The Sulphur Springs Public Library and local attorney Joel Sheffield present “Why do I need a Will?” on Thursday, March 2, 6-8pm. Refreshments will be served and the drawing for a family pack of tickets to Scarborough Fair will be held after the program.

Writing a will isn’t the most pleasant of tasks. After all, by doing so you’re not only acknowledging your own inevitable demise but actively planning for it. That might explain why so many adults avoid this cornerstone of estate planning. According to an AARP survey, 2 out of 5 Americans over the age of 45 don’t have a will.

But creating a will is one of the most critical things you can do for your loved ones. Putting your wishes on paper helps your heirs avoid unnecessary hassles, and you gain the peace of mind knowing that a life’s worth of possessions will end up in the right hands.

“A will is an important way you can stay in control over who gets what of your property,” says Sally Hurme, an attorney with AARP, “and by planning in advance you can also save your family time and money.” – 10 Things You Should Know about Writing a Will, AARP magazine, by Brett Widness, Updated May 2012.

A & M-Commerce Celebrates Centennial March 10

By Scott Cason and Mary Grace Rodriguez

COMMERCE, TX—On March 10, Texas A&M University-Commerce will celebrate its centennial as a public institution of higher education. The small, private college originally known as East Texas Normal College began as a privately funded teacher’s college in Cooper, Texas. Through the visionary efforts of founder William Leonidas Mayo, the college’s appeal to become a state institution was granted by the state legislature in the spring of 1917. Professor Mayo’s long-held dream of making a college education an affordable reality for Texans was realized, but Mayo did not live to learn of his triumph. The telegram announcing the good news arrived minutes after Mayo’s passing.

We will honor our 100 years of history as Lions with a number of events designed to celebrate our institution’s history and how we are going to make our next 100 years even more inspiring. Please join us at 9:30 a.m. on the lawn of Heritage House for a morning rich with new music, fun and an exciting look at where our great university has been and what the future holds for our next century as Lions.
